They have funny moments that can stick with you from time to time but are mostly just vehicles for conveying lore.
I think WaHH and the fairies manga pull that off decently, but pretty much anything not named CDS or SSiB is mostly void of action. FS has some pretty cool art.
Anons may disuade you but honestly I find it much better to just try a couple of chapters yourself to get a feel. Worst case, you can just ignore them, best case you have fun with silly fairy adventures and Reimu being a lazy dumbo who builds mini amusement parks alongside her big sister (in spirit) to try and steal visitors from the moriya shrine. They have more serious moments but personally I have no problem with those and you can just ignore them if they ruin your gensokyo or whatever, certainly doesn't stop me or anyone's fanfiction.

You might want to read CiLR you miss out on quite a bit of the story going on if you skip out on it along with some nice lore and world-building information. SSiB feels kinda empty because you don't get to see the full picture of the story without reading it. I highly recommend reading it especially if you've just come off reading SSiB.
