Anon there's a lot of things you could do to make it better than nd2. Even the super190 tune is better than the nd2. Your nd1 is the perfect tuning platform.

The SSST is the best sounding, period. I was disappointed when I finally heard a race in person and most other stuff just sounds too boomy. Haven't heard a hush-o-matic in person and it's the only other one I considered.

If you want SUVs to hear you add a header, SSST+header is fucking great if you don't mind making noise when WOT. Last thing I'll say, don't bother with a midpipe, you'll gain 1tq and 10 drone.

Any 17s that will fit close to stock on an ND, but also reduce weight without compromising strength and quality? Stock size is 205/45/17 tires on 17x7 rims. Considering some Königs, Hypergrams (picrel) or Dekagrams, but those are 17x8 instead. I don’t want rubbing, or reduced full lock, nothing can be outside the fenders, i don’t want to lower or stance the car, none of that. Where i live, Romania, any change to a vehicle’s dimensions must be homologated, including wheel sizes, you must have the same rim diameter and tire size as in your Vehicle Identity Card, luckily that only mentions diameter but not wheel width, anything that sticks outside your fenders will get flagged by cops though and you’ll have your registration confiscated, or fail your inspections. So i’m not sure if the slightly wider Königs would be a problem. Been looking for something with exact stock size, but other than the tailor made BBS rims can’t find anything. Can i even fit stock tires on a wider rim? I’m new to all this, i looked up wtf offset is, i get all the dimensions but it does not help me be sure how new rims will fit. I just want a nice set of rims for my summer tires so i can keep winter tires on my stock rims.

>Can i even fit stock tires on a wider rim?
Yes. Look up recommended rim size for 205 45R17. It will list a maximum rim size. Sometimes varies by tyre manufacturer.
>wtf offset
It's how far in or out the bolt surface is, compared to the rim. Zero offset, the centre is in the middle. Deep dish wheels, like on a lowrider are about -40mm, FWD wheels are more like +40mm. Measure or look up the ND's wheels stock offset and work from there.

new miata owner here (2005). is this a concerning amount of oil leakage? after 2 days dripping onto floor in garage.

i know these things leak oil traditionally, especially NA and NB but just wondering if this is something to look into or just ignore?

48,000 miles , bought it from a boomer who used it as his “summer car”
>>
>>27630000
>0000
Yeah. It's got a leak, probably from sitting. Presuming that it's coming from the engine, I'd try some stop leak in the oil, which will soften the seals, hopefully fix it.

I can't wait to throw this car around the Nurburgring and backroads again, I'm so fucking stoked for it to come back. Should jave about 220-230WHP after I'm done fiddling with it on the dyno. Keeping it rather conservative right now in order to not break the rods.

It'll have the following mods once everything is done.

Wahlbro 255 fuel pump
Stage 3 clutch
GT2560R Turbo
Kraken manifold, downpipe, exhaust
Audi R8 coil on plugs
MS3 Mini ECU
949 Tecna Coilovers

To do (Near future)
Swap out engine mounts for IL Motorsport competition mounts, or 949 Hybrid mounts (Anyone got experience with these?)
Replace front sway bar with a racing beat tubular bar
Install a small front splitter, nothing too fancy as I'd still like to keep the original look of the NB as much as possible. I absolutely hate rice rockets that are all show and no go

To do (Intermediate timeline)
Replace NBFL Sport brakes with Wilwood dynalites (Not sure if this is needed as the goal is to just make this an OEM+ car desu)
Replace ND wheels with 949 6UL 15x8

To do (Far future/If ever.)
Replace pistons and rods with forged variants
Upgrade oil pump
Install an oil cooler
Install baffles in the sump
Replace harmonic dampener with an ATI Superdamper
Replace GT2560R with a EFR6758 for reliable 320-340whp
If anyone has some other recommendations regarding the NB, let me know. Goal is to make the car better in every way compared to factory.

Bros, what is a good car for somebody that wants a Miata but needs to at least occasionally carry 2 passengers?
>>
>>27630261
v6 challenger
>>
>>27630261
I guess the big question is if these passengers are children or going for a short distance (so you'd be ok with a 2+2 design like a Mustang or BRZ), or if they need leg room and you want a four door.
>>
>>27630261
Older BMW 3 series convertible? The essence of miata is lightweight rwd convertible, so if you can get 2/3 of those things (and preferably a stick shift) it would be a reasonably good compromise

But then I get back in my Miata and drive it, and I NEVER leave that car wanting another. The Miata is peerless. What a fucking awesome machine, I'm so lucky to own a beautiful one. God bless Mazda.

I know its possible, I just don't want to risk damaging it.
The guy I bought the hardtop from said it's best done with a towel draped over the boot to limit any scratching, but as the video shows its still an awkward job placing the hardtop down. He's three inches taller than me and still says its hard to put the entire thing down by himself.
The only other issue I have is that I have to travel further to put the hardtop in a safe, secure place. What space I have is also limited, and I'd want it back on as soon as possible.
I have a cover to keep the car protected when using a softtop, but the cover takes up far less space when not being used.

Had this happen to my NC soft top awhile back and I manage to fix it. Mine came completely undone from the top and bottom (was only held by the the cloth headliner). You will need these things plus a very good caulk gun since the glue is pretty viscous and hard to squeeze with a cheap gun. Clean any of the old adhesive with a razor carefully not to fuck the top or mess the tint if your glass is tinted. You can get away without the suctions cups but hindsight I should've gotten them (didn't know they were a thing) since it would have made my life easier since I didn't had anything decent to apply pressure around the glass seam, for it to properly seal. Let it fully cure before testing for leaks with a hose. I had to do some extra gluing around the seam to stop some leaks, but 6 months in since the fix in the hot and humid rainy Caribbean heat, it has held. Read the 3M adhesive instruction carefully and let that thing fully cure. Wear gloves this thing is fucking nasty and is a fucking pain to get rid of. ONLY thing that I found that worked was GOO GONE.

In some lighting conditions (artificial and occasionally dawn/dusk) the smoked bronze kinda clashes with the wheels, but it'd probably look good all the time with a black top. I ordered em without having seen them for the weight reduction, figured I'd risk it and I'm happy enough with them. Thanks, It's been a good few years of driving for sure!

Anyone seen any decent work on ND(2) ITBs? I'm a glutton for sounds, the header and SSST sound great together but I could use some induction noise. I'd settle for tiny performance gains as long as it sounds nice. Aftermarket intakes barely add any sound and I've got a lot of exhaust noise to balance.

I had the IL competition mounts for a while, the NVH was pretty bad (granted I built the motor in my basement so it's probably not *perfectly* balanced) so I replaced them with new oem mounts. I had lots of drivetrain movement as the oem mounts are pretty soft so I used some stiffer diff mounts. Now it's actually enjoyable to drive again. For reference it's a 1990 chassis with a BP4W and similar turbo to yours.

Noob here, my ND Miata needs rear brake pads/rotors and the dealer wants
$600
for parts/labor which seems insane. Trying to source the parts myself and bring it to another shop but I'm unsure about OEM vs. aftermarket parts for my use case. All I'm doing is daily driving and occasionally spirited driving on twisty roads. Would I be good with some decent economy pads/rotors from the auto parts store?
>>
>>27653932
I don't know why anyone would buy less than oem. Under any circumstance, especially with brakes or rotors.
>>
>>27653932
>auto parts store pads
Not their bargain basement or even midrange shit. You'll hate the pedal feel, they don't wear well, and they can be noisy. You don't have to go full racecar with them, but I wouldn't want pads for under $40/axle. I'd recommend peeking at Rockauto, the Akebono pads they carry are good, and I'm currently running the Power Stop Z26 pads which I like a lot.
>>
Who else is waiting on parts?
>>
>>27653932
Buy decent pads. Hawk or something. OEM is like $80-$100 for pads which is kind of a robbery but don't spend below $50.
For rotors, again, it looks like Mazda is charging $80/rotor which is crazy. Even flyin Miata is selling centric blank rears, $106 for two. Centric and power stop are both fine brands.
Labor for rear brakes is a joke. Your car isn't even using an EPB, so it is a typical brake job. Push AND turn the piston.
So dealership was charging you $160 for two rotors, $80 for pads, which leaves $360 for labor ? that's crazy.
Honda was trying to fuck me like this except they weren't even going to replace the rotors. I stuck with OEM pads because this car does use them to help turn-in during normal driving and idk I wanted whatever the OE put on it even though they're tearing my ass for it. The fronts I went with hawk...mf's wanted $1k because Honda decides to change to two piece rotors for the fronts 4 years into the life of the car. Nah I'm good.
>>27653951
Waiting on motivation..and whether I want to sand down the paint a bit below the CMC to tackle any light surface rust before stopping the vvt engine back in.
>>
>>27653964

I would run crumpled up receipt paper in place of brake pads before buying another set of hawks.
>>
>>27630239
I run the 949 hybrid mounts on my turbo nb. The engine is absolutely glued in the bay. If i shove the engine from the side I can rock the whole car on it's suspension without discernable engine movement. It stopped the turbo from hitting the frame rail which was my main goal. The performance is great - engine slop is gone, it even reduced transmission twist and 3rd gear misses (but not as much as Mazda comp diff mounts). NVH has noticeably increased. Vibrations felt through the seat and even steering wheel increased at idle and low rpm. At 3k and under various parts of the dash vibrate and rattle depending on rpm. Over about 25 mph or 3k rpm and the NVH mostly fades into the background vs road / wind noise. Install was sort of frustrating trying to get everything to align. I did not have an engine hoist and balanced the engine on a jack, then made the mistake of removing both mounts at once. Don't rush it like I did and instead do 1 at a time, rocking the engine side to side. Overall recommend - the vid probably explains just as much:

if you dont mind paying a few hundred for pads imported from japan, dixcel makes their z-type pads for the miata, in their part finder it's under the roadster/eunos roadster section. they make a LOT of dust, especially if you're heavy on the brakes, but they're extremely resistant to fade and rated for both street and track use.
>>
>>27653999
Honestly the OEM (non-brembo) pads are pretty good though. They're the Akebono pads on Rockauto if anyone wants to avoid the dealer tax, but they're priced about the same as comparable options. In my experience they give 99% of the performance of an "aggressive street" pad from one of the go to performance brands with way better daily/mild use characteristics for the same price. Good pads aren't cheap
>>
….1.6l idles at about 900 rpm (ac off) then the fucking thing skyrockets to 1500rpm if I drive it around a bit. Seems like the only thing that’ll get it to shoot back down to 900 is turning the AC on and letting it run for a bit. You guys think I got a vacuum leak? The idle fluctuates about 100-200 rpm up and down for a bit if the engine hasn’t been running for at least 30 minutes.

is there already a plug for the speakers or will you have to wire it all yourself?
>>
>>27655863
I'll have to run wiring through the center console up to the parcel shelf for it, but it already has an aftermarket head unit with a pigtail that has rear speaker wiring provisions so that's already part of the way there. I don't know if it's a Bose windblocker or one with regular speakers, so I'll know what I need to do on that side when it comes in. Gotta bypass the internal amp in the windblocker if it is Bose.

Never understood the coolant reroute meme since both the temp sensors are at the back of the head where it supposedly gets hottest. If I'm not seeing high temps on the gauge or in the ecu data then how would cyl 4 get cooked?
>>
>>27658075
Overheating isn't the issue the reroute is designed to fix. It's the temperature differential between the front and rear of the engine that it aims at curing. Just because the rear of the engine (where the sensor is) isn't technically overheating doesn't mean the engine is going to be happy about the front two cylinders running cooler than the rear two because the fronts receive more coolant flow, for the same reason you shouldn't beat on an engine that isn't fully warmed up yet- thermal expansion and different parts expanding at different rates, with an optimal happy point at operating temperature. The engine will internally wear less (and be easier on the head and headgasket with less chance of warping) if the entire engine warms and cools evenly front to back rather than heating one side more than the other.

>you think theyd expect it to be the light switch though?
Everyone pretty much expects light switches to be next to whatever interior light it operates, so that switch, which is in an awkward place, is suspicious af. The real "OEM" play here would be to highjack one of the dash switches nearest to the door. If you have a blank slot, buy an OEM switch of your choosing (foglight, window isolator, etc. Etc.) and plumb your wiring into that. I'd also get a battery isolator for when you leave the car for extended periods of time. Just a simple knob that sits on the negative terminal of the battery.

Oh, just so my post isn't "nO yOu FuCkEd Up AnD yOuR dUmB!!!", the switch being functional in the middle is a good idea, and at the end of the day simply having an isolator switch at all is good. A for effort, B- for execution.

Not him but have you ever sat in an NA before? The light switch he wired up IS next to the light it operates. The NA map lights are placed kinda silly. Having a centered map/dome light on the windshield frame started with the NB.
>>
>>27661957
I own a 1995 Eunos Roadster and my interior light is by the rear view mirror, and said mirror is mounted to the windscreen. iirc, '95 and up NAs have various QOL differences to the earlier models, at least outside the US.
>>
>>27661978
I see, probably just an NA6 quirk then.
>>
>>27661994
Maybe. Glad I don't have those map lights though because you're right, they're awkward as fuck. What was mazda smoking?
>>
>>27662066
Probably has to do with how unsure they were of how well the Miata would sell while they were designing it in the 80s, so being cheaper to make in things like that that didn't matter too much helped get the thing out the door. Fortunately for everyone, the Miata exploded in popularity and far outsold expectations, so they had plenty of money by 94 to massage out customer complaints of NA6 weirdness like the map lights

...and a dash with a passenger airbag and an interior trunk popper, and to add power with the 1.8 and drop the shitty vLSD for a Torsen

>Torsen
I had no idea these things were so expensive. Was looking at eBay and my 4.3 torsen is worth nearly half what I bought the car for. Nuts.

Previous owner didn’t notice this while installing a new clutch. o2 sensor’s pinched between the transmission and the motor. Should I snip this thing in half so the cat goes into “failsafe mode” or leave it as is and continue driving? I’ve got a “code 15” when I put the car in diagnostics mode. that code is obviously for the o2 sensor. BUT I need to drive this car soon.
>snip it?
or
>leave it?

I say that because I've been in this exact position before lmao. Even then, if you're such a pro wrencher, loosening a couple more bell housing bolts until it does have just enough slack to let go of the wire shouldn't be a problem for you. Or shit, do it the shitty way and just cut the o2 sensor wiring and bypass the pinched section by splicing new wires. Or just straight up replace the O2 sensor, I'm not your mom.
