>>4689549>>4689552>>4689558>>4689561A few years back there was a rare Northern Hawk-Owl in my state. It was on a piece of land on an indian reservation. People were flooding the area and taking photos all day. The owner of the land got upset about this and came out and warned the people to stop taking photos of his home. The crowds ignored it and people kept coming. One day people came and found that the owl had been shot and was hanging dead from a tree limb.
>>4682423Anybody seen Flaco?
They always look so perceptive.
Octavia or Stella?
>>4693704that's a big moth
At least one is living the next building over. It's kind of a stable like building, it lives up in the top where no humans ever go to.Probably a lot of bats though.
Reddit: the birdBut I do like them.
>>4703359wtf does that even mean?
Was stargazing in a park at dusk in Oregon a few years ago, watching some bats chirp around when suddenly this dude flew over, maybe 15 feet off the ground. He was massive and caught me by surprise, but managed to snap this pic of him afterwards
>>4682423these are some Cool Owls
>>4703586He's a massive contrarian who can't stand the idea that the shambling masses can like the same stuff he does sometimes

A pair of burrowing owls we have here in south Florida.
>>4682423Love these things. So cute. Shame that keeping one is very difficult
I NEED to hold them, they look extremely soft, even for a bird
>>4715959Owl feathers are different from other bird feathers. They have a soft velvety feel that aids in making them completely silent in flight. So they really are softer than other birds. Look for a Raptor Center type of facility around you, many of them offer hands-on experiences for a fee.
>>4715959It's true that they are soft.Me and my brother stumbled upon to a owl cafe in our trip in Japan. There was chance to hold one of the many owls and pet it a bit.My brother chose an Ural Owl and he said it was one of the softest things he ever touched. I pet this this little thing and it was also very soft.
>>4690009I don't live in NYC anymore but my sister still lives in Yorkville and has seen him more than a few times.
>>4710418Those are the diurnal ones, yeah?I had an owl in my back garden (or a neighbour's) for several months a few years ago. Dunno what type it was but it hooted incessantly just before dawn.

>>4686767I didn't even realize you commented. They look absolutely amazing and they genuinely don't make a sound when they fly point to point. I used to live northern canada and these fuckers would be gliding around at dusk if you were looking carefully. Fuckers make their nests out of the corpses of their kill. https://youtu.be/Uf5IQiLOQK0
>>4690009RIP. He died young, but he died free.
I got a job taking care of owls that can’t be released into the wild due to various injuries. I can now cross “pet owls” off my bucket list.
>>4727201I befriended a barn owl and used to visit it every night. I doubt it's alive anymore. :(
>>4736222trips of basedness
how do I interact with owls? I'm in New England I'd love to get close to one, I haven't found one in the wild yet though. I just want to see them up close...
>>4736534Rehab or educational/outreach center is your only chance of touching a live owl in the US. Wild owls don't want to interact with you. If you want to observe them somewhat close up, like 7-10 yards, Barred and N. Saw-whet are the most accustomed to people walking nearby and generally roost lower in the trees than other species.
>>4736558Good to know, I'd never want to disturb one in its habitat, I just would love to see one up close. I need to get back out there and search for them in the woods
I saw an owl here two times here in the Netherlands, the same owl on the same spot. I drove my back back home late at night and it sat on the street light over the bike lane. Magical moment and a spooky vibe. It was a big one too. Two weeks later I drove there again and it was in the same spot, in the middle of the night.
>>4736797Assuming you are in the US, here are some tips. Owls that eat rodents will naturally be near manicured lawns that are great hunting grounds, so urban and suburban parks are actually great for looking. Look with your ears, crows and songbirds do not like owls around, so if you hear a pack of angry crows or alarmed songbirds, there is a strong chance a raptor is nearby and it could be an owl. Check out suburban neighborhoods with lots of bird feeders. Most feeding stations end up with piles of seeds on the ground under the feeders because birds are messy, those piles attract rats at night, rats attract Barred Owls. Lastly, look for whitewash, which is a nice way of saying splatters of white bird shit. They can be under or on the sides of trees because owls will roost all day on a brand and leave streaks of whitewash under them.

I just saw an article today that Flaco had herpes and died from eating a poisoned rat. : (I didn't even know birds could GET herpes.
I love howls, but I know so little about them. Any layman guides you guys recommend?>>4757986Who the fuck gave a bird herpes?
>>4759264like do you want to know about their behavior or biology or just learn the differences between species? general bird guides are pretty good at giving you a bit of all of those things. the sibley guide is great and kind of the gold standard, and those audubon field guides are cool too.
>>4759285Now answer the second question.
>>4759526a lady never tells ;)
>>4759648If you're on this site, you ain't no lady.
>>4759264>>4759285Sibley and other field guides are for identification. The most they will say about the owl is habitat and maybe something about feeding behavior. If you want to learn about Owls then something like the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls is better.>>4759264He got pigeon herpes from eating infected birds.
>>4757986>>4759264The boring answer is that there are many different kinds of herpes viruses, not just the human sexually transmitted variety. There are over 100 species, of which only 9 are known to regularly infect humans, and only one of those, herpes simplex 2, is what we traditionally think of as "herpes". There is a 90% chance that (you) have had some kind of herpes virus infection at some point in your life, even if you've never had sex. Chickenpox is actually a herpes virus, for example. Cold sores, which almost everyone has had at least once, are also a herpes virus, specifically herpes simplex 1.
>>4759914I learned that after learning that Flaco got it. I decided to read up on it.
>>4761687Grumpy bois
>>4761687What's the species on the right? It doesn't look like a baby. I didn't know owls could get that little
>>4765165Northern Saw Whet Owl, one of my favorites. And yes, that's an adult. Believe it or not they are not even the smallest owl, that would be the Elf Owl which is about the size of a sparrow and lives in cactuses in the American southwest.
>>4765167Here is the Elf Owl, which is not just the smallest owl in the world but also the smallest bird of prey in the world.
>>4765168they can be even smaller than this I think which is crazy
THE rare black barn owl
>>4773142looks like a black guy wearing a gray hoodie
>>4682645kawaii
>>4765168>smallest bird of prey in the world.what does it hunt?
I saw an owl last night and their faces look very silly from the side, such a flat faceThey look very fluffy as well, like they’re wearing fur coats, but I know that in reality the hard feather shaft means they wouldn’t be nearly as nice to pet as I’d wish Overall, good thread, beautiful creatures
>>4776230Bugs mostly. Grasshoppers, scorpions, beetles, centipedes, moths, and the occasional small rodent or lizard. They have even been known to rarely take small birds. Micro-owls like Elf and Pygmy Owls are typically super aggressive and able to take surprisingly large prey given their own size if necessary.
>>4776526hilarious and cute. never knew such a thing is a thing, but it is a gut thing
is there an owl that makes calls very similar to a coyote? because i was camping one time and in the middle of the night heard a bunch of yotes not 20 yards from my site. pretty scary at the time but obviously nothing happened>>4777017beautiful
