Are you really telling me Dimetrodon is not a reptile?: It sure looks like a reptile to me. Why would mammals evolve from something like this?
R: 17
The Bone-Chilling Evil of Factory Farming: The crime committed daily and what you can do about it I know, I know, I’ve made this point before. I’ve described, in depth, the way we treat animals. I’ve described that we stuff billions of chickens into tiny cages where they can’t turn around or flap their wings—where their frail bones are broken three times on average over the course of their brief lives, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yI7z9_rOoPJzfiodkkwq8l95fOIViejP/view where they inhale nothing but feces deposits from the caged birds above them. WHY DO THEY PUT HENS IN CAGES? – Small and backyard poultry I’ve described the results of a report https://benthams.substack.com/p/extreme-suffering-on-the-farms?utm_source=publication-search which estimated that egg-laying hens spend about an hour a day in distress as intense as the most intense distress most humans ever experience. That they never see the sun except immediately before slaughter—that one of the most distressing things that can happen to a hen, being unable to perch, happens to nearly all the egg-laying hens in the world.

Petting is essentially a biological cheat code Mammals (and some other animals) evolved to generate happiness chemicals (oxytocin) from skin to skin contact to encourage mating and beneficial social behaviours Human hands are so dexterous that they are able to perform particularly pleasant motions that overload animal nerves so much, that we are able to basically pet entire species into submission, also known as domestication and taming, by getting them addicted to our affection

My 9-month-old cat became deaf and blind after surgery: Hi everyone, I'm in shock and really struggling to understand what happened to my cat Chibi (A little kitten found on the street, badly affected by cat flu, weighing only about 8.8 ounces at 2 months old.), and how to deal with it. She’s 9 months old and had kittens two weeks ago. I called the vet to schedule her spay, clearly stating that she had just given birth and was still nursing. I was told it wasn’t a problem, and the appointment was set for Wednesday, August 8th. I dropped her off at 8:30 AM as instructed (she had fasted), and at 9:35 AM they called me to say she had suffered cardiac arrest but they had managed to resuscitate her. For the next five days, despite my repeated calls, I was given very little information, and the few updates I got were inconsistent some hopeful, some very grim. The only detailed explanation I received came during one phone call: The vet used an intramuscular injection of medetomidine and ketamine. There was no monitoring of vital signs (no pulse oximeter, ECG, intubation, etc.). A cardio-respiratory arrest occurred just moments after the injection, followed by resuscitation efforts that lasted around six minutes. Today, they told me I can pick her up tomorrow. She's no longer on IV, but she's lying down, completely deaf and blind. I’m heartbroken. I’ve completely lost trust in the vet team, and I believe they may be responsible for what happened to her. Has anyone been through anything remotely similar? How can I care for a cat that’s both blind and deaf? How do I find out the truth about what happened whether this was due to a mistake or negligence? What are my rights here, and how do I make sure my voice is heard? Lastly, should I pay the bill right away, or ask for a detailed invoice first and take time to decide? Any help or guidance would mean a lot right now. Thank you.

New Dog/Cat General: I'm looking to get a dog and need some advice, but I didn't want to just make a thread for myself so I figured I'd make it a general thread for anyone looking to get a new dog or cat. I'm looking to get a medium sized dog for companionship and to have someone to take on runs and hikes. However, I live in a smaller-sized studio apartment and I'm in college. I want to know if having a high physical activity level and giving it a good level of mental stimulation would negate the size of the apartment. My daily schedule would look something like this: >Wake up at 530, walk 15 minutes to a trail, run for 15-30 minutes, 15 min walk back >630-730 shower, shave, breakfast, then leave for school >1200-1300 I'm back at my apartment, take the dog out to take a dump, make myself some lunch >1300-1430 Take the dog out for lower intensity physical exercise with more mental stimulation (in particular, take the dog to my college the to play catch and interact with people, to a near by dog park that also has some walking trails, to some nature trails that are very undeveloped and have a lot of wild animals, creeks, ect, and for a walk around downtown Nashville) (those would be the four main activities for that time frame that I could choose from to keep things fresh and mentally stimulating) >1430-1900 I would mostly just be in my apartment studying, occasionally taking breaks to hang out with the dog or watch YouTube or something >at 1900 take the dog out for a quick 15-20 minute walk and then spend the next couple of hours making dinner and getting ready for bed >on the weekends at least two casual walks per day and one long hike in the hills on Saturday or Sunday This is a schedule that I'm confident that I can maintain with some slight variations. I know I can keep to this schedule no less than 80% of the week. I want to know if this is a reasonable amount of physical exercise and mental stimulation for a medium sized dog to offset the small living space. 1/2

Imagine you are born in a place that's not your home. You want to eat. You want to survive. Maybe have children...but then there are these massive, near cosmic-sized creatures that don't just hate you; they your entire kind wiped out because something vaguely about you damaging their trees by living a normal life. These colossal cosmic creatures are around by the millions, and every second, there's a chance they might see you and kill you on sight, without warning. It's not because you did something because maybe you will do something. They don't even eat you. They stomp on you and go about their day, talking about what type of food they'll have when they get home. No trial. No justice. No attempts at reason. You're just dead. Ironically, you figured out the best means to fight such a cold, purposeless existence in a meaningless universe:You do nothing. You just sit there, or walk around aimlessly. You don't run if these cosmic entities see you. Why would you? A single one has roughly the same strength as 100,000 of your species. So instead, you just accept death. You might talk to your friends, you might travel to see and understand the world a little more, even if it raises more questions. You know you'll be murdered in cold blood at some point. You've seen so many mashed up carcasses of your own species just laying there as a constant reminder of the fate that awaits you. Yet still, somehow, you still hope. You hope in the face of every. Not in life, but hope that somewhere out there, beyond the furthest planet and the furthest star...lies a reason for why this all happened. Or a little fraction would be fine. Just a nanosecond of significance and meaning in such a tireless and terrifying universe.

I have a hedgehog. She tries to mimic my mouth movements in an attempt to mimic the words I say. Nothing crazy, but kinda like a parrot. She understands and tries to mimic a few words and phrases as follows... I love you. Food. Water. Thirsty. Tube. Mommy. Daddy. Hugs and cuddles. Scoot scoot (i.e., get in your cuddle pouch.) Fortress of solitude (i.e., her hut.) Warm (i.e., her heater.) Bath Ducky Bunny Ball Trim (i.e., her nails.) etc. ...and she has started shaking her head "no" or nodding "yes" when she doesn't want or does want one of the above things. In fact, she seems to mimic my body language when it's very simple and easy to undersrand, but will nod, etc. without being prompted. Is this normal hedgehog behaviour? She seems to not only try to mimic words and communicate, but also demonstrates a basic understanding of these things. She will point out requested objects like her ducky or bunny or her ball or anything else she's familiar with upon request. Then she gets happy after she gets it right and is praised for it. Everyone says hedgehogs are stupid animals, but I've had 2 so far that have gone out of their way like this to attempt to communicate and learn basic concepts and even obey my commands (more like gentle persuasions...but they listen to me and do whatever I ask of them, if they are familiar with the request). They have also both used their toys in their playpen to create mazes for themselves to run through. They are very specific about how they arrange these mazes and will rearrange them after they get bored with the current configuration (usually after running through the configuration about 20-30 times). So...are hedgehogs actually dumb...or are the majority of their owners just underestimating them? I estimate mine has the intelligence of a smart dog or a human toddler.

chickens: why are chicken the best bird? just look at them >already born in survival mode >don't need mom to feed them directly >already fast as fuck one day after born >mom will fight anything in order to protect them, other birds just fuck off if things get too dangerous >can learn to swim >can't fly but can glide for over a mile in the right conditions >can cross roads. there's literally no other bird this ready to live, they just don't conquer the world because they are too delicious

Vampire Spider: This is the Vampire Spider (Evarcha culicivora). It lives in the Kenya/Uganda area and mainly consumes mosquitoes of the Anopheles genus. Its common name comes from the fact it indirectly consumes blood via its prey. Since Malaria is severe in its natural habitat, it is theorized the spider could lower disease carrying mosquitoes population. This species has an especially violent mating and courtship ritual. This includes sexual cannibalism from both male and female spiders. It has superior vision because it belongs to the family Salticidae (jumping spiders, which interestingly is the largest family of spiders containing almost 7 thousand species. They are also known to feed and mate on the castor bean plant.

Cat Person >I don't like dogs. They smell, are dangerous, and are a lot of work to look after. So I choose to not have a dog and avoid places dogs tend to be. I don't like when dog people bring their dog to my house without asking Dog Person >I fucking hate cats, I want all cats to fucking die, cat people are freaks, my dog would never bite anyone who didn't deserve it, and I trust his judgement so anyone he doesn't like deserves to get bitten! That 8 year old was fucking asking for it, fuck around and find out I say! Any man who owns a cat is definitely a pedophile! I also deliberately run over cats I see outside, because they aren't allowed to be outside! I saw a cat outside in someone's backyard so I opened the gate to let it out then killed it because it was on public property illegally! Yeah I am a binge drinker and watch Michael bay movies how did you guess? Jokes aside, why do people who don't like cats get so unhinged about it? Every single person I have ever met who doesn't like cats was a total psycho.

People always justify carnivores as “ecosystem managers.” But in the Big Pine Key ecosystem, only deer remain. There are no predators. Population is regulated by starvation. It works. If the entire American continent had only deer, it would be a perfect ecosystem. Because besides famine, there are CWD. Slow entropy. Natural culling. No violence. Conclusion: carnivores were pure evil. Always were.

Place i work at has a large warehouse with two large gates. There's pidgeons living in it. They can't get rid of them and stopped trying. Basically, nobody cares. But it keeps irritating me, because every day from 2pm to 6am, the gates are closed. There's also nobody working on weekends. I'm not sure how the pidgeons handle that, but i doubt it's optimal. So I've been thinking about a way to get rid of them for good, to force them to fuck off and stay out of the warehouse. Any ideas?

Are cats retarded?: I have always and dogs ang I bought a cat for the first time. My friends also have cats and I think they're basically retarded or autistic. They stay in absurd position for hour or keep looking the wall where nothing happen. you call them and they don't come. When you pour water for the 1000th time in the pot and they look like it's the first time they see some magic fluid. Yeah I think they're definitely retarded animals.
