Any bros played this?Turn based strategy with squad compositions and perma death. Story is generic and rubbish, but gameplay is good.I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Game is a bit easy even on hard though, clearing most missions with S rank and no casualties.A lot of cool units, although its weird how much dragons suck ass. Foot archers, Samurai, Light Infantry(Other than Swordsmasters) also all seem like traps.
My party comps at chapter 20.I've been struggling to get use out of Stefan, and Lysander is OK but since he has no combat power himself his squad struggles to do much. Enemy burst damage tends to make his heal fairly worthless.Maybe with the gun tech to fire twice he becomes worthwhile with massed muskets?
>>1717436Great game. I want the Dev to churn out more like this and improve unit variety. The best part for me was the unit upgrades. I love to see visual changes when the class is upgraded. Use dedicated squads in case of skirmishers. Use the forests and the cat hero to maximize damage. Dragons are somewhat okay but again needs a dedicated squad to work properly with healers in the back
>>1717465>Dragons are somewhat okay but again needs a dedicated squad to work properly with healers in the backDragons tankiness feels quite low, their damage output as well. And having a line of 3 dragon + healers is very weak to assassins. Maybe dragon riders are better, but everything before that feels super subpar compared to what else you could have.
>>1717437>LysanderShould be in a squad of gunners and cannons. Nothing else. I was running 3 gunners, 3 gunners, 2 cannons and Lysander in the back in the late game and his squad mowed down anyone that wasn't cloaked in nothing but steel.
>>1717478Expensive and highly fragile. Now that I have the tech for gunners firing twice per combat I should probably work towards it, but I don't see a reason to not provide him at least a frontline. 1 muck up and replacing the gunner casualties would be a nightmare. Plus using him when you have to be so cagey would be difficult.
>>1717436really good game, story is generic/boring, portraits are 3d porn tier of bad, it could use some sort of skirmish mode
No one cares about your shitty game shill.
>>1717709Go back to your TNO thread homo.
>>1717436Like it but I hated the Story and the romance system
>>1718116Does the romance system even do anything? I've been skipping the conversations just to get the faction XP out of them.
>>1718137First version didn't do much for endings but they made a big patch later to have an ending. it is basically fire emblem but with teams fighting instead of a single dude. Leaders are represented by the sprites on the map.
>>1717476Dragons main use is utility moving around with flying there’s a few maps where flying can help out a lot, outside of that their use case is pretty minimal, but Abigail is also pretty much the only dragons squad you run anyway.
>>1718358I'm not even that infused by her trait, considering that dragon riders are so far down the tech tree they'll be at full class mastery by the time you get it even without her.I ended up just giving her a squad of all mages. Does way more damage than the dragons ever could.
>>1717436though about getting this in the sale but looked too easy >Story is generic and rubbish>really good game, story is generic/boring>Like it but I hated the Storythat sounds strange to me because dancing dragon games are story focused with lots of politics autism
>>1718694I found the game quite easy most of the way through but the difficulty kicks up a bit lategame. Can also achieve hardness via high difficulty+permadeath.
>>1718694story is fucking garbage thoit starts generic which is not bad but then it jump around like crazy and its full of self inserts and badly written fanfics, most characters are meh at best too
>>1718694>story focused with lots of politics autismThat doesn't make it good
>>1718694Well it is a combination of fire emblem and ogre battle which is why everyone likes the gameplay so much. Literally the build autism of tactics based games. The story is, well, basically like the nuFire Emblem where it may as well just be a showboat for waifus. Also the teal hair looks stupid with this art style they should've gone for a much more darker and natural shade of aqua color.
>>1718694>story is genericI wish it was just a generic shounen story. The twist where literally all of your friends backstab you ruins it.
Any other games like this? Didn't particularly like Ogre Tactics.
>>1718694The story starts as what you could call politics autism, but it's a very generic and superficial type of autism. After the into the politics stuff quicly stops mattering entirely and it becomes a generic JRPG chosen one vs evil empire plot.
>>1720910>Didn't particularly like Ogre Tactics.Did you play Ogre Battle?Same franchise but different gameplay.
>>1717478>>1717484For Lysander I just went with Oops All Gunners and gave him the artifact that lets you always take the first turn on defense. Doesn't matter if your squad is fragile if you kill everything before it gets a chance to hurt you.
>>1720952I feel like things like mages are better at instantly deleting everything. Their threat is lower though, which is better or worse depending on how you use them.(Mages rock like 1000 to 1500 threat, gunners have nearly 3000 without much issue)I feel like the time modulator is best on a robust squad with high damage. Diana is a good candidate, enemies get easily wiped in the first 3 battles as she fights first, but she still performs well if there's more fights. Can use exemplar or positioning to force enemies to run into her.>>1720949I didn't, just tactics. What's the gameplay like in battle?
>>1720965>I feel like the time modulator is best on a robust squad with high damageI feel if your squad is robust enough you can just add a healer and wreck shit without needing to always move first. That doesn't work as well with gunner squads. Sure you could say just don't use gunners since mages are better anyway but that's no fun.>What's the gameplay like in battle?Similar to SoW except map movement happens in real time.
>>1720968>I feel if your squad is robust enough you can just add a healer and wreck shit without needing to always move first.Depends what you're up against. Some enemy units have some really big AOE / burst damage that your healers are in a losing battle against unless you're putting in multiple of them. Going first with a strong squad is 3 fights you'll end with basically full health on everyone. Which if you're attacked 5+ times can make quite a difference in how attritioned you end up being.Big stacks of enemy dragoons are particularly rough for it as it can be difficult to bait them forward without letting them get an attack in.
>>1717436Looks like a cheap Unicorn Overlord knock-off made in RPG Maker.
>>1721033This came out a year before Unicorn Overlord.
>>1721033
>>1721033So if I like this I should play Unicorn Overlord?
>>1721929Yes
>>1717586Do you know of any games with similar mechanics that you'd consider superior w.r.t. portraits, story, etc?
>>1718694>>1718813>>1718947>>1719692>>1720293>>1720947Apologies for mass reply, but was wondering if you could give any input upon >>1724461 as well.
>>1720952I never switched his layout just upgraded his troops. He is the most boring squad leader in both gameplay and story sense. It's annoying how much he hangs around because of railroading.
I want giantess fags to kys because Beatrix is the best girlthat's all I have to add to the ongoing discussion, have a nice day everyone.
>>1725047>World's greatest midriffvs>Spoiled brat who will step on your balls
>>1725047Diana's pre-giantess combat sprit is pretty cute.
>>1717437This is what my squads looked like at the end of the game in my initial playthrough, which was only on normal difficulty. I'd based it largely on some Steam guides I'd read though, so a lot of it is still applicable for any difficulty. That said, some squads were just me fucking around. Like, Narima's squad has no healer because she uses Soha's Blood Shard + Belinda's Field Kit. Swordmasters aren't bad, but they're also not the greatest. I just wanted a squad of them 'cause they're cool, but it's hard to not use Assassins since, otherwise, you end up wasting a lot of attacks on frontline units that have already taken lethal damage. Also, Bert's squad was me wanting to see how Centurions faired at making up for a lack of mages.Anyway, on to your stuff.>StefanAssassins + Rangers is a powerful combo. I also threw as many Thievery and Scavenger books/units as I could into his squad to get a bit of extra income. His squad did very well. Don't underestimate the strength of Assassins. >LysanderHonestly, I wasn't too fond of muskets. You could just make him into a cannon squad leader. But yes, IIRC, muskets didn't really seem worthwhile until they can fire twice. His squad with my setup is basically an anti-heavy armor unit. He and the Sentinels make a decent frontline for the 6 Dragoons, and the squad moves as light cav. Not bad, but one of my least favorite squads.>no dedicated cannon squadsAmend that. Mixing cannons into random squads is a waste of their best asset, their range. You don't need to worry about the vulnerability of 6 cannons if you position well, and stacking them so you have 6 or 7 means you can one-shot most types of enemy squads from beyond counterfire range.>no dragons at all, much less 3x dragon squadsGoal for your next playthrough.I also wouldn't mix gunpowder in randomly with heavy infantry squads. One or two gun units are far less effective than a couple mages. Gunpowder needs to be employed en masse to be good.
>>1717436I 100% the game last year just before the DLC came out. Loved the game. Bought the DLC. Never played the game with the DLC.
field artillery is so op with cavalry movement
>>1726004Did they buff Samurai, or are they still kinda shit? I haven't played since the DLC came out even though I bought it immediately.
>>1726008They have decent evasion but they're still just worse than the melee classes, worse than the ranged classes. They have a little utility as front line for a ranged unit that still contributes to ranged combat, but thats about it.But cavalry archers are very good at not getting engaged so I didn't find it very needed.
>>1726025Yeah that about sums up my experience with them as well. It's too bad 'cause I think they're pretty neat. Maybe I'll try to make a squad work with them next playthrough anyway since not it's not like every squad needs to be some minmaxed giganigga unit.
>>1726027If you decide to use footarchers they're worthwhile I guess.
>>1726008i like the versatility, hes useful when charging, taking a charge and when we have to shoot with the artillery at range 2 or when returning fire. less hp than the sentinel but same armor when attacking and much better skill so you get more hits, evasion and crits
These were my endgame stacks. Hardly optimized but I tried to keep them somewhat thematic.
the real question: do you play with or without permadeath for mooks?i did for my first run, going in blind, and my losses were frequent enough that i rushed for the techs to make raw recruits start out stronger. probably a mistake, because i ignored the right side and didnt get gunpowder units until very late
>>1727620>the real question: do you play with or without permadeath for mooks? With, makes no sense otherwise. Would play with permadeath for named characters if I could.
>>1721033>>1721929Kind of funny how both games have big girls too.
>>1725047I love the giantess and her sprite animations but the whole kid thing ruins it and canon she hooks up with the thief.
>>1727620>>1727689i tried with but it made the game a lot less fun. the game isnt really designed with it in mind. theres no fun tension, its just annoying
>>1729127>but the whole kid thing ruins itFucking honestly. Even setting aside the used goods vs purityfag argument, that shit just felt so weird to have in the game in general. Seemed like it was the dev's weirdly specific, semi-cuck fantasy which that particular part of the story was built around. Fuck that
>>1729142It kinda makes sense though. If you've got a caste of holy female warriors, you'd want to make sure they'd at least pop out a few kids before you send them off to war, so the bloodline doesn't die out if they end up getting wrecked.
its kind of funny how shitty the writing for some of the character conversations are, and how some even feel like they were written by another person because the tone is so different and bad. the dev got so butthurt by repeated critique of stuff like that so he deleted the respective channel on the game's discord.
>>1730834I literally skipped everything.
>>1717436The story is absolute is trashThe art is erh generic (Beatrix is still hot though)I used to love the gameplay, but somehow, Unicorn Overlord worsened my enjoyment of it.
>>1730917>Unicorn OverlordThat's not gonna sell in the west
>>1730937Eh, I probably would've bought it if it was on PC.
I thought Jules was a girl until they started calling him prince.....
>>1730917The story is trash and the developer of the game is really defensive of his shit writing talents.Should have had someone else handle the writing for the sequel.
>>1730834>>1731299Yeah, the general plot and ideas are fine, but the dialogue itself is pretty awful and even turbo cringe at times. He should DEFINITELY just give an outline of intended events and relationships and outsource the script to somebody else. Or at least get it looked over by some kind of editor that isnt a suck up.
>>1731299you didnt just skip all?
bought the key for like $2 but cant find cheap key for the dlc, should I play base game and bought dlc in the next steam sale?
>>1734688The DLC isn't that big a deal, you can safely skip it if you're poor and not miss anything significant. However if you want to experience the DLC properly you'll want to get it early on because you probably won't want to do a second playthrough just for the DLC content.
>>1734693I read that they added some new classes or shits. LOL I think I'll just wait when it gets cheaper, thanks nigga
>>1734707Necromancers are pretty cool but they're not exactly game-changing and IIRC you get them fairly late in the game. Most of the DLC is just optional side-missions which are kinda fun but absolutely not essential.
>playing for the first time>do the prison break>one of the guys crits Diana and she fucking diesGood thing I have permadeath turned off. Feels like they intentionally tuned everything in this mission to barely just work out, but if you ever get crit it breaks.
>>1734994>Good thing I have permadeath turned off.Named portrait characters cant die even with permadeath
>>1735074Oh, so it's just that you have to replace the "canon fodder" units? Do people usually play with it on or off?
>>1735112right, just the supporting troops. i THINK it also applies to the rare named troops from the special shops since they arent "story characters" and therefor non-essential.i think most people play with it off because it would just become stupid tedium to level up new troops, especially when its backliners that to assassins and stuff. while you can get WAY more arena tokens than are necessary, it would just be a slog to replace people. and if you lose somebody with good leadership, what are you gonna do, start a new squad with some scrub and 3 troops to just try and grind down the enemy? fucking pointless.
>>1735141>right, just the supporting troops. i THINK it also applies to the rare named troops from the special shops since they arent "story characters" and therefor non-essential.Yes named troops without portraits can die.
Why is the empress that rose to the throne through a long series of succession wars portrayed as timid and incapable? (I know the story is pretty pointless overall, but for some reason this still pisses me off)
>>1735310Because literally nothing about the story is well thought-out. It's just throwing a bunch of JRPG tropes at the wall and hoping some of it sticks.
Why does the dumb cat always disarm enemies after the battle is over?
>>1735522Ok yeah, I was before the point where the story goes crazy and up to that point it was really weird, like a story that easily could've been coherent if minimal changes were made. It's also annoying how they have this clearly extremely lazy story, but constantly let it interfere with what the game does well, the unit building, by taking your units away for story reasons and giving you 2 scripted loss missions in a row or something (only just started the one with the hand).
>>1735602when it started getting really wierd is when i stopped completely skipping the story
>>1735310>unmarried empress and an ambitious Prime minister who’s starting a coup based on the fact that he’s saving the empire. Why not just take her hostage and forcibly marry her, a fertile royal womb is an instant ticket to legitimacy.>Jules was a man all alongThe name and shitty Korean plastic face fooled me for so long I thought it was a mistranslation.
>>1735583>Why does the dumb cat always disarm enemies after the battle is over? He's a shit meme commander, barely had a use for him in last third of the game, lots of the pre-made named commanders are better.
>>1735734I got a decent bit of use out of him, he's the best light infantry commander by a decent bit. Light infantry are pretty meh, but if you wanna use them he makes it work.Ambushing in any terrain at night makes ambushes a decent bit more reliable. He himself is very bulky so he works well as a frontliner. Just pair him with swordmasters and stack skill and evade chance and you'll have a fairly robust and high damaging squad.
>>1735602theres only one scripted loss (although apparently it is winnable and theres an achievement for it). the one with "the hand" (the dark knight on a dragon) is easily winnable, you just have to cross the bridge. but i agree, taking units away feels like ass.
>>1735867i liked the segment where your party gets split for a bit. felt very tense with permadeath even though it didnt end up being very hard. its good for strategy games to throw the player a curve ball on occasion
>>1735867I thought I was controlling blue, like in every other mission in the game when I made that post. Only after I realized it was a really boring scripted win instead.
>>1735991it was a cute novelty and im sure some people like that sort of thing, but on actual examination, i definitely always prefer to cultivate and grow my party, rather than swapping around.
>>1735734>t. retard with no sense for tactics I bet you send your heavy infantry into a gunner line
>>1736065>your heavy infantryI have almost no squads that get classified as heavy infantry
>>1736067Ok retard, show unit comp then
Am I missing something or are gunpowder units kinda shit?
>>1737094they ignore most of the armor something has AND hit really hard
>>1737094Canons are great. Probably even more overpowered when on horses, but haven't played the DLC yet.
>>1737094Shock units
>>1737094They're great but require the right positioning, having a squad of dragoons roaming around makes things a lot easier and canons would help if you need to turtle.
>>1735867>although apparently it is winnableYou don't really win if you clear his forces he just goes "lol look at my reserves get fucked" and you lose anyway without being able to fight the new wave of reinforcements at all.
>>1741417its kind of like beating gades in lufia 2. you win the fight, but then just just goes "fuck you" out of the fight and lightning nukes you. you still "lose", but you win the real fight presented to you.
Do I really have to move to be able to attack? why should I have to move out of an advantageous position to attack an enemy that's right in front of me? was the shitty UI and controls also part of paying homage to classical tactical jrpgs?
>>1741535no? its been a while, but im certain that you can stay put. maybe you just have to select the same spot with your move? i dont know, but im certain that you arent forced to vacate your position/formation. you must be missing something.
>>1717436Cleared it on the hardest difficulty on release and had a lot of fun even with the generic story. Gameplay really carried it, I enjoyed it more than unicorn overlord recently maybe.Slowly working my way up to a full lysander alpha strike musket line was fun.Have the expansion in steam and it has all these extra missions, characters, and harder difficulty, maybe I'll do another playthrough soon and try and actually beat that 'unwinnable' fort defense mission this time
>>1737094Without the upgrade for double shots dragoons and muskets are shit. They ignore armour, but even with armour things like swordmasters are hitting way harder.Cannons are more usable but can be difficult to use, they're expensive and die easily(If playing non-permadeath then thats not so much of an issue). The horse cannons are very good, they don't put out as much damage but are much better at being in the right place at the right time, and retreating.I never ran a full line of them but I found them useful alongside raiders.>>1741507Yes, what does she have to do with video games?>>1741535You can attack without moving.
>>1741535Did you click the same spot as they are?
