Any bros played this?
Turn based strategy with squad compositions and perma death. Story is generic and rubbish, but gameplay is good.
I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Game is a bit easy even on hard though, clearing most missions with S rank and no casualties.

A lot of cool units, although its weird how much dragons suck ass. Foot archers, Samurai, Light Infantry(Other than Swordsmasters) also all seem like traps.

I've been struggling to get use out of Stefan, and Lysander is OK but since he has no combat power himself his squad struggles to do much. Enemy burst damage tends to make his heal fairly worthless.
Maybe with the gun tech to fire twice he becomes worthwhile with massed muskets?

Great game. I want the Dev to churn out more like this and improve unit variety. The best part for me was the unit upgrades. I love to see visual changes when the class is upgraded.
Use dedicated squads in case of skirmishers. Use the forests and the cat hero to maximize damage. Dragons are somewhat okay but again needs a dedicated squad to work properly with healers in the back

Dragons tankiness feels quite low, their damage output as well. And having a line of 3 dragon + healers is very weak to assassins. Maybe dragon riders are better, but everything before that feels super subpar compared to what else you could have.

Expensive and highly fragile. Now that I have the tech for gunners firing twice per combat I should probably work towards it, but I don't see a reason to not provide him at least a frontline. 1 muck up and replacing the gunner casualties would be a nightmare. Plus using him when you have to be so cagey would be difficult.

First version didn't do much for endings but they made a big patch later to have an ending. it is basically fire emblem but with teams fighting instead of a single dude. Leaders are represented by the sprites on the map.

Dragons main use is utility moving around with flying there’s a few maps where flying can help out a lot, outside of that their use case is pretty minimal, but Abigail is also pretty much the only dragons squad you run anyway.

I'm not even that infused by her trait, considering that dragon riders are so far down the tech tree they'll be at full class mastery by the time you get it even without her.
I ended up just giving her a squad of all mages. Does way more damage than the dragons ever could.

Well it is a combination of fire emblem and ogre battle which is why everyone likes the gameplay so much. Literally the build autism of tactics based games. The story is, well, basically like the nuFire Emblem where it may as well just be a showboat for waifus. Also the teal hair looks stupid with this art style they should've gone for a much more darker and natural shade of aqua color.

For Lysander I just went with Oops All Gunners and gave him the artifact that lets you always take the first turn on defense. Doesn't matter if your squad is fragile if you kill everything before it gets a chance to hurt you.

I feel like things like mages are better at instantly deleting everything. Their threat is lower though, which is better or worse depending on how you use them.
(Mages rock like 1000 to 1500 threat, gunners have nearly 3000 without much issue)

I feel like the time modulator is best on a robust squad with high damage. Diana is a good candidate, enemies get easily wiped in the first 3 battles as she fights first, but she still performs well if there's more fights. Can use exemplar or positioning to force enemies to run into her.

I feel if your squad is robust enough you can just add a healer and wreck shit without needing to always move first. That doesn't work as well with gunner squads. Sure you could say just don't use gunners since mages are better anyway but that's no fun.

Depends what you're up against.
Some enemy units have some really big AOE / burst damage that your healers are in a losing battle against unless you're putting in multiple of them. Going first with a strong squad is 3 fights you'll end with basically full health on everyone. Which if you're attacked 5+ times can make quite a difference in how attritioned you end up being.
Big stacks of enemy dragoons are particularly rough for it as it can be difficult to bait them forward without letting them get an attack in.

This is what my squads looked like at the end of the game in my initial playthrough, which was only on normal difficulty. I'd based it largely on some Steam guides I'd read though, so a lot of it is still applicable for any difficulty.

That said, some squads were just me fucking around. Like, Narima's squad has no healer because she uses Soha's Blood Shard + Belinda's Field Kit. Swordmasters aren't bad, but they're also not the greatest. I just wanted a squad of them 'cause they're cool, but it's hard to not use Assassins since, otherwise, you end up wasting a lot of attacks on frontline units that have already taken lethal damage. Also, Bert's squad was me wanting to see how Centurions faired at making up for a lack of mages.

Anyway, on to your stuff.

Assassins + Rangers is a powerful combo. I also threw as many Thievery and Scavenger books/units as I could into his squad to get a bit of extra income. His squad did very well. Don't underestimate the strength of Assassins.

Honestly, I wasn't too fond of muskets. You could just make him into a cannon squad leader. But yes, IIRC, muskets didn't really seem worthwhile until they can fire twice. His squad with my setup is basically an anti-heavy armor unit. He and the Sentinels make a decent frontline for the 6 Dragoons, and the squad moves as light cav. Not bad, but one of my least favorite squads.

Amend that. Mixing cannons into random squads is a waste of their best asset, their range. You don't need to worry about the vulnerability of 6 cannons if you position well, and stacking them so you have 6 or 7 means you can one-shot most types of enemy squads from beyond counterfire range.

Goal for your next playthrough.

I also wouldn't mix gunpowder in randomly with heavy infantry squads. One or two gun units are far less effective than a couple mages. Gunpowder needs to be employed en masse to be good.

They have decent evasion but they're still just worse than the melee classes, worse than the ranged classes.
They have a little utility as front line for a ranged unit that still contributes to ranged combat, but thats about it.

But cavalry archers are very good at not getting engaged so I didn't find it very needed.

i like the versatility, hes useful when charging, taking a charge and when we have to shoot with the artillery at range 2 or when returning fire. less hp than the sentinel but same armor when attacking and much better skill so you get more hits, evasion and crits

The DLC isn't that big a deal, you can safely skip it if you're poor and not miss anything significant. However if you want to experience the DLC properly you'll want to get it early on because you probably won't want to do a second playthrough just for the DLC content.

Necromancers are pretty cool but they're not exactly game-changing and IIRC you get them fairly late in the game. Most of the DLC is just optional side-missions which are kinda fun but absolutely not essential.

Ok yeah, I was before the point where the story goes crazy and up to that point it was really weird, like a story that easily could've been coherent if minimal changes were made.
It's also annoying how they have this clearly extremely lazy story, but constantly let it interfere with what the game does well, the unit building, by taking your units away for story reasons and giving you 2 scripted loss missions in a row or something (only just started the one with the hand).

I got a decent bit of use out of him, he's the best light infantry commander by a decent bit. Light infantry are pretty meh, but if you wanna use them he makes it work.
Ambushing in any terrain at night makes ambushes a decent bit more reliable.
He himself is very bulky so he works well as a frontliner. Just pair him with swordmasters and stack skill and evade chance and you'll have a fairly robust and high damaging squad.

Cleared it on the hardest difficulty on release and had a lot of fun even with the generic story. Gameplay really carried it, I enjoyed it more than unicorn overlord recently maybe.
Slowly working my way up to a full lysander alpha strike musket line was fun.

Have the expansion in steam and it has all these extra missions, characters, and harder difficulty, maybe I'll do another playthrough soon and try and actually beat that 'unwinnable' fort defense mission this time

Without the upgrade for double shots dragoons and muskets are shit. They ignore armour, but even with armour things like swordmasters are hitting way harder.
Cannons are more usable but can be difficult to use, they're expensive and die easily(If playing non-permadeath then thats not so much of an issue).
The horse cannons are very good, they don't put out as much damage but are much better at being in the right place at the right time, and retreating.
I never ran a full line of them but I found them useful alongside raiders.
