Time to talk about the fun machine.
Dunno how many played Lode Runner 3D but I have been playing it and its fun even if hard as shit, would recommend if anyone wants to play a lesser known N64 game.
Also been using Neon64 to play some NES games.
>>
I can't play it cause it doesn't emulated well on anything
>>
>>10888564
emulates fine on my laptop with iGPU via retroarch

the popular titles at least

I bet this thread can't go 100 posts without mentioning Nintendo 64's blurry, smeared textures, or making a Vaseline joke.

Not counting this post.

Prove me wrong /vr/.

Playing a bunch of N64 games I’ve never tried before
>Banjo Kazooie
The environments are weird and feel somehow more gamey than Mario 64. The collection mechanic is addictive. Flying is so much better than Mario 64.
>Glover
This is really cool, everything about it is fun. Somehow I can’t find all the collectibles per level, so there must be some secrets I’m missing.
>Kirby
I always thought this looked like shit compared to Adventure and SS. I beat the first world, and so far it is shit.
>Goemon
A deeply janky Zelda clone, and like most Zelda clones, that means no puzzles, just rooms of enemies. I could see this being awesome if you are 7 and literally don’t own other videogames.

Just got my everdrive in the mail today. What hacks are essential? What are some hidden gems? Is the retrotink worth getting? (I’m a retard when it comes to picture quality and resolution)

>Time to talk about the fun machine
My Switch was acting up, and I got fed up with modern Nintendo. Gave me the motivation to show my old stuff a little TLC. Cleaned up my N64, though it didn’t need too much work. Really looking forward to playing Paper Mario again.
>>
>>10888718
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
>>
>>10888830
>Hacks
Smash Remix, Banjo-Kazooie Jiggies of Time, Mario Kart Amped Up, Space Station Expansion Bugfix, Mace Dark Age Complete Edition, Chameleon Twist JP with english translation, Doom 64 Complete or the improved brightness hack, Mario 64 Sapphire and Virtua Pro Wrestling 2 Freem.
>Hidden Gems
Robotron 64, Rocket on Wheels, Puzzle Dama 64, Stunt Racer 64, Iggy's Reckin Balls, World is not Enough, Shadowgate 64, Winback, SD Hiryuu no Ken Densetsu, Quake II, Wetrix, Space Invaders, Star Soldier 64, Nuclear Strike 64, Forsaken 64, Zool 64, Shiren 2, Battletanx.
>Retrotink
Depends if you think your image output is really bad, I have seen some LCD TVs make the video quality of the N64 far worse than others.
>>
>>10888830
what kind of TV do you have?
>>
>>10888564
Then don't emulate.
>>
Feel like playing some goemon. Also i'm training my mario golf character on gbc to transfer her to 64
>>
>>10888885
Thank, anon. I’ve loaded the full library and several of those hacks. Just verified everything is working.

>>10889062
It’s a Samsung 1080p LCD with built in component ports. Doesn’t look very good, so I might consider the retrotink in the near future. I know of a decent CRT I could probably get for free, but somehow, I don’t think my wife would agree with me setting that behemoth up at our place kek.
>>
>>10888564
I was emulating N64 without issue on my laptop in 2011

>Having to choose between rumble or savegames
Thank fuck Sony lawsuit-drained the shit out of that company. One of the very few times litigation-killing actually improved gaming (looking at you, Creative faggots).
>>
>>10889660
You just have to swap the controller pak when saving, many games tell you that. It's not ideal but hardly ever an issue

Do you have a spare space to setup the crt? I designated a retro game area for my setup which leaves still other parts of the house for the wife. She complains about my decorations though. I have to make them tasteful, which oddly enough, is making my gamer setup look better.

>A deeply janky Zelda clone, and like most Zelda clones, that means no puzzles, just rooms of enemies.
Zelda was a clone of Hydlide to begin with and in terms of 3d games with puzzles, Tomb Raider came first.
Goemon 64 doesn't really need the puzzles, it has some platforming and action sections that don't play by themselves or force you to quietly wait until the enemies become vulnerable.
>>
Did you get all the gold medals on Pilotwings 64?
How about perfect scores?
>>
>>10889847
Global Assault is next on my list. That's the one I remember playing as a kid.

I have a spot that I’m thinking of turning into my personal workspace (telework, electronics repairs) that could probably house a CRT. The process of setting that up will take me a while, though. New house. Still furnishing more important areas for the family.

Glad you’ve got a setup that’s working for you. Compromise isn’t all bad. My house would probably be nearly empty if I was a bachelor. I’m not really the type to decorate.

>>10890296
I’ll check it out. Turning off anti aliasing on an N64 feels wrong somehow, but I guess jaggies are going to translate better to fuzzies when a modern tv tries to fit the image to its screen.
>>
>>10889629
id say get a retrotink 2x then, and get some good quality shielded s video cables.

Yea, I had just wanted to add a few retro game themed Tapestries to my game area. My wife flipped out and said I was making it look like a frat house. So now I have to build wooden frames for my tapestries. So they will actually pretty nice when it's done.
>>
>>10891185
As >>10891307 points out DK64 is one of a handful of games with copy protection stuff. I know Jet Force Gemini is another one. I thought the DK64 anti piracy annoyance was that it eventually deletes your save but possibly this is a consequence as well.
>>
>>10892251
I guess I'll try a patch. Just seems weird since I thought DK64 only had issues with earlier Everdrive models and not the X7.

is there a way to get puyo puyo sun and no mercy working on super64/ed64plus?
I know you can using the alt64 firmware but iirc that OS has a lot of issues that stock fw doesnt have.
>>
>>10893390
i was about to install the alt64 firmware. what are some of the issues with it? I thought it was just a straight upgrade.
>>
some anon made a 64 thread on v since it’s his birthday
Won’t you go say hello?
>>
>>10890564
Loved the music in this game
>>
>>10893545
smash 64 deletes its own saves, some games that work on stock dont work on alt64 (i think they're perfect dark, fzero and pokemon stadium 2).
Honestly stick with the OG firmware until N64 Flashcart Menu announces compatibility with ed64plus/super64
>>
>first level recycled from the first game.
oh well these are like 2 hour games so whatever.

I bought the Switch N64 controller and have been going through everything on its N64 library. It’s missing a lot of my favorites (Perfect Dark, WWF No Mercy, Diddy Kong Racing, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron, Bomberman 64 etc) but it’s cool to play some new stuff I never had to try back in the day:

>F-Zero X
- Have been sinking a lot of hours into this. It’s surprisingly deep. Just unlocked the first batch of new riders. I like how you not only have to learn the tracks, but figure out ones to jack up your top speed or acceleration beforehand. Tough game but keep coming back to it.

>Jet Force Gemini
- Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are my favorite games, so I was really excited to play this. I took awhile to get going but I really grew to love the weird controls, excellent space opera soundtrack, and Starship Troopers feel. However the stages are kind of linear so far, I’m hoping that changes eventually. Overall it’s pretty great

>Blast Corps
- I always read about this in Nintendo Power and thought it looked awesome. It lived up to expectations - simple, short but sweet gameplay with enough to do in each stage to keep coming back. Great comfy game to unwind with before going to bed

>Mario Party 2
- Loved the first one, but this one is a lot better. The duals and star stealing drives me nuts. Have been playing it a lot.

>Extreme G
- Kino racing game with an excellent soundtrack. The password system sucks but with save states it’s really cool

>Iggy’s Reckin Balls
- Weird game. Just couldn’t get into it

>Excitebike 64
- I found it borning. Not a motorcross guy
>>
PSA: Even if you do not care much for wresting, all N64 enthusiasts you check out the AKI wrestling games.
They are some of the most mechanically deep and feature-rich games on the system with great controls and performance.
>>
>Loderunner 3D
That is the game. I rented this decades ago as a child and could never remember the title, but the maps were burned in my memory, and I saw it in my dreams for years. Thank you OP. May God bless you and may your dick be sucked by a nice Christian woman who will take your hand in marriage.
>>
>>10894073
Virtua Pro Wrestling 2 Freem is the best way to play AKI wrestlers, huge roster with a mix of the WWF, WCW and the VPW games.
Best of all it works on any flashcart including ED64+/Super64 unlike No Mercy.

Shadowman is way better than it had any right to be and I'm still fucking SHOCKED nintendo gave it a pass. Scared the fuck out of me when I played it as a kid, loved it when I got older and revisited it. N64 Horror hasn't aged nearly as well as PS1 for whatever reason, but shadowman still has its moments. Fucking killer soundtrack, too.

>>
>>10888885
I loved Shadowgate 64 when I was a kid, I remember that I thought that game was amazing. Emulated it a few years ago and it has aged horribly and game mechanics were so jenky I gave up.
>Winback
Damn blast from the past, I also remember Winback being awesome.
I'm wary of emulating old games I used to love because there is a chance i'll think "how the fuck did I ever think this game was good?"
>>
>>10897165
Can't say I have found myself not enjoying games I liked back then after playing them again.
I think Winback is great but I do have some issues with the level design, specially on the last missions (fuck all those laser traps).
>>
>>10897171
The one thing I remember thinking was really cool with Shadowgate is the part of the game where you have to turn your controller upside down to complete the puzzle. But in my playthrough as an adult I never got that far because iirc it's close to the end of the game.
And yeah I agree, fuck those laser traps that made me rage as a kid.
It's more of a me problem, the games are still great, i'm just far more critical and cynical when it comes to playing games.
>>
For me? Super Robot Spirits
>>
The Nineties were the decade of JRPGs and you can't play one on N64. Not only because carts can hold enough data, but also because of the controller. Switching from analog stick for overworld to dpad for menu nav is impossible on this bizarro controller.
>>
>>10898361
For a second I read that as "the nintendies was the decade of the jrpgs".
This board has morphed into /v/ so much that I just expect to read /v/ console warry lingo in every post lol

Brought my N64 to my gf's place over the weekend. She fell in love with Bomberman 64 multiplayer and got spooked by Doom 64.
>>
>>10897165
Emulation is still faulty for 64 games in ways you will only notice if you played the originals. Starfox for example desyncs the BGM during the ending sequence at several points.
>>
So what’s the agreed upon solution for controller pak management? Forever pak? Deleting saves? Are there worthwhile games that take up an obscene amount of memory?

Somehow, I never had a pak as a kid despite owning games like Rayman 2. Looking to get one for use with my everdrive.
>>
>>10901996
i have the performance pak, i get 4 controller paks in one, i think they still sell them but their battery must be dead so better replace them.
afaik Hexen, Snowboard Kids and Mario Kart 64 can use entire controller paks.

It does nothing but Nintendo worked in a permanent psychosis in their fans that it does. Everyone who will retort this will either:
>cope and say that some games required it despite that requirement simply being a built in jumper check to make sure you simply had it installed.
>That having it installed somehow makes the performance better despite it being a physical impossibility due to the fact that it's never going to make the RAMBUS transfer data more efficiently without bottlenecking and actually making the performance worse due to more data having to be shared by a baby cache/insufficient bus lanes.
>That it totally wasn't a cope to buy play time before crashing due to memory leak Rare couldn't fix which is why these paks were shipped with the game they made.

solution: left hand on left tine for menus, right hand at center for smooth movement where needed, L button and trigger for menu activation/cancellation, SNES-style graphics to save resources and vastly improve graphical quality since early 3D is awkward and should only be used in games that actually feature 3D worlds (so, not '90s JRPGs)
>>
>>10900071
they aren't claiming perfection - 4chan users' wives are almost invariably fat, and a family with a fat person in it is far from perfect

I remember back when I started collecting n64 games everyone on the internet made fun of the console. Games like starcraft 64, killer instinct gold, conkers bad fur day, paper mario rpg all were like 20€ cib in good condition.
