Why did he fail to replicate Sonic's success?
>>
he looks like a character made up for like a math or reading education game.
>>
movement is clunky and not fun, feels like a eurojank game
>>
because he's a dumb fucking star and not a cool blue hedgehog
>>
because nobody could pronounce his name
rister?
ris-tar?
rye-star?
the world may never know
>>
>>10879491
He should have been called Fastar, so that dumb autist kinds recognised they can go FASTER than Sanic with this one.
>>
>>10879526
The game eventually becomes fun but it does not give you a good first impression.
>>
>>10879501
Also it was a late gen game not made by Nintendo that released not long before the Saturn and PlayStation. Lots of good games have suffered commercially from being released shortly before or after new consoles come out, what with all the hype and everything
>>
Sonic was never that great anyway. Once the visuals, music, and photogenic character wears off, you're left with a pretty dumb and shallow action game.
>>
>>10879526
Absolutely not, it feels 100% japanese. Just different from the usual Sega platformer, reminds me more of Yoshi's Island with how slow and focused on a central gimmick to solve pseudo puzzles is.

I'll never understand the 90s obsession with deforestation. It's not like the rainforests were being cut down by Big Paper to fuel their printers, they were being chopped down by Brazilian government contractors to make room for more farmland...
>>
>>10879491
It was too hard. Anyone can beat Sonic 1-3, the final bosses in Ristar are fucking bullshit.
>>
>>10879583
It was just The Current Thing of its time
>>
best water level in a video game
>>
>>10879583
kek in college I had a professor who unironically thought that paper came from the rainforest and oil came from dinosaurs
>>
>>10879491
you wouldn't never understand it, in mid 90s ANYTHING and EVERYTHING was posible.
>>
>>10879543
I always thought it sounded like a smushing of 'wrist' and 'star'

>you play as one of those things that kirby flies around on
>you know, the things mario eats!
>>
>>10879491
It's not very fun and kinda slow. The grabbing mechanic is neat but not really taken full advantage. Might've been better off as closer to a puzzle game. It's also one of those games where everything feels kind of randomly designed.
>>
>>10879491
Sonic was a fluke. This thing and the gay jester game made it quite clear.
>>
>sonic was just a fluke, bro!
>trust me!
>>
>>10879491
The main mechanic isn't very fun, but everything else is awesome. Feels like the lost link between Sanic and Nights for Sonic Team. But the real reason is probably because no one cared about the Mega Drive by the time this came out, which is very unfortunate.

>>10879526
Sounds par for the course for Sonic Team to me.
>>
>>10879552
>Once the visuals, music, and photogenic character wears off
They don't. SA2 is just as insanely unbelievably cool as it was when I first played it in 2017. I guess sometimes it's okay to play just for the flair.

Rising Star
>>
>>10879785
Don't forget Blinx the cat
>>
It came out in '95. I never knew about it until a lot later. I played it and it is a great game.
>>
>>10879491
Gamers were saving up to buy the Saturn and Playstation at the time. Dropping last gen like a hot potato.
>>
just played the first two worlds, pretty decent game
>>
>>10879491
look at that gay little bitch, come on
>>
>>10879491
I don't think he was intended to. It was just a fun little side game for Sonic Team. That said, it's still a great game, just not on the same level as Sonic.
>>
>>10879794
>shits the bed immediatly after 2 games and becomes the laughing stock of the gaming world for 2 decades straight and counting
not a fluke though.
>>
>>10879559
>reminds me more of Yoshi's Island with how slow and focused

yoshi has actual mobility and speed compared to ristar, not to mention a better executed grab mechanic
>>
>>10880098
Yoshi's Island also has infinitely more memorable graphics, music, stages, enemies, and bosses.
>>
>>10880090
Is that why they're making a third film
>>
>>10880104
sh-shut up!
>>
>>10879850
This, Ri from Rising and Star from.. well, Star.
I always cringe when I see Youtubers pronounce it as Risster.

>playing some Rister with me sister on the Zegga Genesis!
>Yep, good ol' Zegga, much better than the Sonny Playstation.
>>
rizz-tar
>>
>>10879785
>we need a flagship title for our new console
>how about an on rails arcade game
>about kids that transform into flying jesters
There was literally no one at the wheel at that fucking company.
>>
>>10879559
Yoshi's Island isn't exactly great either. It's a bullshit collecting game. Though I will say that the graphics and touches of Nintendo's designs elevates it far above the average shovelware platformer.
>>
>>10880141
it feels like you're on an epic adventure in a way that Ristar just doesn't. Ristar is a very very unmemorable B-tier platformer without cool gimmicks like giant bosses or the MC getting high on drugs.
>>
I pushed myself past the first level or two and it did get better but didn’t blow me away. Great presentation though. First impressions are very important and it just didn’t seem that fun, just kind of clunky and awkward. Maybe I’ll give it another shot soon
>>
>>10880146
>without cool gimmicks like giant bosses or the MC getting high on drugs
Didn't you get to the part where the bird boss melts the BG or where the hugefuck bosses start raping your ass?

Anyway, I like both games, they both feel like playing inside an oldschool shonen anime adventure to me. Wish the game had a sequel.
>>
>>10880167
i mean, it's Japanese at least and wasn't farmed out by SOA to one of their many American shovelware mills.

I don't like Yoshi's Island but it has actual movement physics and feels great. I just played Ristar again to refresh my memory, and it's movement sucks. Ristar can barely move by walking and jumping (air control is also horrible), so you use his stretchy arms to get anywhere, but everything involving his arms has animation locks and feels awful. you can't cancel out of grabbing or swinging or climbing, and Ristar drops like a rock so you have to constantly grab shit so you don't end up back on the ground. and this game came out after Donkey Kong Country, which absolutely beats the shit out of it in every way.
>>
>>10880352
it looks and feels like a game from 1990 not 95
>>
>>10880354
You don't know what games looked like in 1990.
>>
>>10880381
he's off by only a year, Sonic came out in 91. however there were some 1990 games that looked pretty good like Atomic Robo Kid.
>>
>>10880403
Not even Sonic 1 looked as vibrant as Ristar. Sonic 2 is vibrant, not the first game.
>>
Mister Ristar was a sister fister
Took his pleasure in his sibling's bum
>>
>>10879583
You mean it was done to feed Brazillians? That's even worse...
>>
>>10879491
Because sonic is fast. Like way faster than many games out today. Ristar is slow and dies in like four hits. It’s colorful and has good gameplay but I think he was 1) too late to the party and 2) the character and world design is lame. Also there’s not a whole lot he can do besides swing around and I guess suplex random objects. Headdy is a much better platformer just for the variety it has
>>
>>10879491
it was a one thing one game only.
it seems yor IQ is room temperature or zoomie level.
well seeing how someone of your gen the other day said on a video "this strategy RPG is a ripoff of fire emblem" and then tried to be apologetic but too late, just because is an SRPG doesn't mean is a ripoff of fire emblem.
>>
>>10882368
>We totally didn't intend this game to be successful or anything!
Kek

As a German this fucker always reminded me of the Spielothek mascot.

No idea what the English word is and if those things exist in England or the USA.

I would just call it a casino but a sleazy casino where they only have slot machines but shitty slot machines that play themselves and you can't press anything and hope to win. All you do is insert money and press play. It's super depressing and I don't see what the fun is if you have zero input or influence on the game. It's pure luck and a scam and attracts gambling addicted low lives. It's super depressing.

Anyway graphics of Gaystar are 10/10. The presentation is great but I rather have a game with shit graphics but fun and great game play. The game play just doesn't work here. It probably sounded good on paper but that's it. It's gimmick game play that isn't fun. Great graphics can't save this mess.
>>
He was never intended to save the world. His dad was supposed to be the one doing all the work but he got kidnapped before he could save the galaxy. He never wanted to have adventures in the first place.
>>
>>10882560
you guys should love a gimmick game with great graphics and shit gameplay; you made about 1,000 of those on the Amiga

it was like a microcosm of woes. rampant consumption, unchecked growth, the carbon consequences, etc.
it was all bullshit, of course. I'm sure there was some Thai sweatshop somewhere pumping out captain planet merch and dumping the chemical waste in to the local canal.
>>
>>10882536
SEGA didn't return to a lot of successful franchises. Where was Streets of Rage on the Saturn or Dreamcast? Hell, where was Sonic on the Saturn? Ristar could have been intended to be a one and done. SEGA is mysterious, but damn do they know how to shoot themselves in the foot by not making an occasional entry in a franchise they made.
>>
>>10883270
Germans did? Only group I know is factor 5 and they did amazing retro games.

So name 10 shitty Amiga games (that aren't a simulation) by Krauts. I'm waiting.
>>
>>10880103
Not a big fan of Yoshi's, a game that I found quite boring, but I don't care that much about Ristar either, so I could still agree with you, except for the music. Yoshi's only has one memorable track (Athletic), everything else is mediocre. And you also spend the whole game hearing the same five tracks over and over, they get really old. I'm not that sure about the more memorable levels either. In Ristar, each level has its own graphics, songs and gimmicks, including one level where you have to carry a metronome and give it to different birds, who will start singing longer arrangements of the music. Yoshi's doesn't have that many surprises to give you once you have finished the first world, except for the bosses.
