Gem or coal?
coalFFVIII on the other hand is a glistening gemerald
>>10868445Neither, it is a non-dualistic wave entity that collapses into fleeting material forms from the imaginary number domain, it is all and none.
>>10868445noone ever posts screenshots for this all I ever see is that weirdo from the front cover and a big x. Wheres the gameplay
>>10868809You're reading this thread, right? so, that's similar to Xenogears' gameplay.
Best Squaresoft girl.
Flawed gem. Play it with a text speed hack.
>>10868445Zoom Zoom
>>10868809I've always thought about this. I think I've seen a grand total of like three actual screenshots when people discuss this game, everything else is literally just the cover art.
>>10869591I sometimes see this pink hamster being crucified. (It is still retarded in context)
>>10869594The same also goes for the Xenosaga games, have only ever seen the cover art and a handful of actual screenshots.
>>10868445Begone, zoomoid
>>10868445I got to the prison before losing interest, never picked it back up.>cool combat presentation>interesting divide in combat, on foot vs in mech>combat has the pretense of a combo input system but doesn't do much with it at that point>never saw much of a clever exploration of the divide of combat modes>story sequences seemed to happen with a decent sense of pacingDidn't do much for me, lost interest in continuing it. Fans at the time hyped it up as some incredible untold story with grand religious implications. I ended up completing another RPG with a focus on its religious concepts, Panzer Dragoon Saga which only had a few moments that dragged in an otherwise far better paced package. While I didn't complete it, it seems to be a game where the fans pretend it's much bigger than it really is, but it seems none of the xeno games deliver on the promise the fans made hyping this one up.
>>10868445Buy a gimmick accessory early in the game or you will get bricked at the final boss /10also, I hope you like to read but not so much that you notice the glaring plot holes
go back
You're supposed to say "soul or coal?"
>>10868445Story: unique and fascinatingGameplay: alright, a bit repetitive It’s worth it for the story though.
Id is a chud
>>10869765>not Krelian
>>10869572Elly's the best whenever she's in her angry bitch mode.
Xeno, in all its permutations, a shit.
>>10869605So you gave up before any of the buildup paid off. Basically the first third of the game. Sorry you don't really have a valid interpretation of the game.
>>10869601There's a simple reason. Only 0.01% of people play JRPGs a second time. And for people who owns emulators and have never played those games, they don't play them because they have better things to play.So the only people singing the praises of games like these are people who played them 20 years ago on actual hardware
>>10871341Which is to say, those people don't have screenshots to post
>>10868445>>10868809let me get this out of the way: nobody plays Xenogears for the combat. it's basic ATB with some combo gimmicks that are underused. The animations and combat graphics are great, but it gets old after a while and are not fully appreciated on the playstation hardware. The people who enjoy the game like it because there is tons of worldbuilding and lore that get folded into the story for the first 30-40 hours. It's a slow burn where the player gets all this seemingly unrelated information, and then suddenly the game connects it all together with flawless execution, resulting in a nonstop stream of mindblowing moments for like 10 hours straight. I don't know of any other game with this much ambition, this much scope and buildup, and then delivers such an emotional and satisfying climax with all of it. The best part is the game takes itself seriously and at face value: There is very little of the unfunny japanese humor in the game, no meta comments or anything like that. There are a few nods to the mecha and anime community, but otherwise the game plays it very straight. If you like RPGs that focus on characters, character interaction, and a consistent plot which is grounded in the lore of the world, then Xenogears will deliver all that.

>>10868445It's a gem, but bordering on coal since the gameplay hasn't aged well. This deserves a remake just to revamp the gameplay and flesh out the the disc 2 content.
>>10871410Yup. Xenogears is a terrible game, a classic anime. It might be the best giant robot anime of all time, hidden inside one of the shittiest games of all time.If it had been an anime, it would have been a 4 season non-episodic space opera in the same vein as yamato, gundam and evangelion, and it would have proudly stood among the best of all of them.Even the slow speed of the text (and not giving the player a text speed up or skip option) was a deliberate choice to emulate naturalistic speech. It contains all the pauses, stops, speed ups, and implied inflections you would find in spoken dialogue.Xenogears was never going to have "good gameplay." It was a vanity project by two crazed writers who had a visionary idea for a novel/manga/anime and decided (for better or worse) to stick it in a shell of a game. Takahashi himself admitted that he didn't give a fuck about the gameplay while directing it, all he cared about was the story, atmosphere, presentation, art and music.Anyone that goes into Xenogears should get their expectations in order. The gameplay was bad even by the standards of the era. The game is just a trojan horse, a delivery mechanism for one of the craziest (and sometimes incredibly moving,) stories from Japan, from a man that admitted he should have made a book.
>>10871628Yeah there was a lot of "why am i playing this instead of just reading/watching it" thoughts while playing, also a similar case with Planescape. The gameplay was an obvious afterthought.
>>10868445Disk 1 GemDisk 2 Coal
>>10868445Sharty-saving spine-tingling diamerald covered in dust as the kids say
>>10871486>agedgameplay doesn't age. bad games then are bad now, and good games then are good now. kys
>>10868445Good game but you can literally see on the screen when the production budget ran out.You would think games were made in a non linear manner like how movies so you can spend the budget on the most important parts, but not Xenogears
They'll probably remake this game but only in like 2040
>>10868445It's so full of jrpg cliches it almost feels like a parody of the genre.
>>10868445it is a pure kino game, if you like those you will love it
>>10871848bro, you're thinking of the dragon quest series. Xenogears does have the typical jrpg fixes like the mc being the chosen one, airships, etc, but they all feel perfectly in place in the game.
>>10869594>It is still retarded in contextNo it isn't
>>10871975this. Krelian gave the order to string up the captives in the most visible way possible to draw in Elly. Crucifixion is exactly how this was done in the past. Also, Krelian is the one that genetically modified the chus to grow large, and he had the ethos spread the false narrative of their history which the elder chu (falsely) tells you. So it's perfectly likely that Krelian could prevent ChuChu from getting small also to escape the crucifixion.
>>10872045Look man. I love Xenogears as much as the next Gigachad Philosopher-Pirate-King, but ChuChu was a fucking mistake.
>>10871628>Even the slow speed of the text (and not giving the player a text speed up or skip option) was a deliberate choice to emulate naturalistic speechIt's fine on the Japanese version, which needs fewer characters to convey the same information. The problem is the English version runs at the same speed. Speed hack (and rewind capability for when it occasionally breaks cutscenes) is essential.
>>10871298Kato lost
>>10871419Miang is so lucky...
>>10868445go back to s0yj4ck faggot
>>10872047It's weird and almost silly but their entire narrative being manufactured by a scientist that is playing god perfectly captures the tone of the entire planet, everything you thought was natural was actually being messed with by something higher on the food chain (all of the monsters you fight are 90% genetic freaks that escaped from a lab, including the demi-humans) Hell they are fucking putting genetic sequences inside humans so they fear the Emperor on a goddamn subconscious level. ChuChu is exactly the stupid Japanese mascot creature that seems funny at first and then is revealed to be kinda fucked up. It's also worth mentioning that Xenogears constantly plays around with it's presentation going from serious scifi to having a Gao Gai Gar super robot transformation sequence and no one even complains about it
>>10871628>from a man that admitted he should have made a book.On paper he would have made a better work wiping his ass?
>>10872434Is this bait? With the pajeet grammar it's hard to tell what it means.
>>10868445It's fun. It's got a unique combat system that feels good and the story, while it can be convoluted, is pretty good for a video game. It's no less convoluted than most RPGs honestly. I need to replay it soon and legend of legaia.
>>10868445Pure kino and an absolute Squaresoft top together with FF6-9 and Vagrant Story.
>>10868445Crown jewel
>>10871754This is a meme. 85% of the game is on disc 1 and disc 2 still has some of the best content. It's jewel-encrusted throughout.

>>10872702sounds like he was angry when writing the post because he's implying the game is shit but making it a book made of paper would serve the purpose of wiping the writer's assweird but the theme is "shit">>10872434and no, the super ultra important revealing and totally canon design artbook only clarified the nature of a lot of events and characters but the actual logic as to why things happened only became more blurryif there's one thing that was left clear is Deus isn't God and even the wave existance is nothing but a manifestation of a higher dimension but not a divine beingthe many things that only happened because of the apparent omniscience of those who worked for deus is NOT explained and in fact makes less sense once you read the book
