Are the rates for the eldain absolute suffering though? i've seen people do 300 rolls and still nothing

Eldain rates are bad. The saving grace here is the pity + Elcid system (the purple cards you get for every roll from both character + card gacha). With about 400 of those you can get any previous Eldain unit from the shop (300 for any 3* unit). Since you can also convert pity points to Elcid, and you get both pity + Elcid for every roll, if you just wanted a Eldain character not on a banner you'd only have to roll 200, then convert that pity to Elcid to buy the character from the shop for 400 Elcid. The catch here is that it's cheaper to get the character through pity alone, but it allows you to still have options if the character isn't on a banner.

I have around 17k gems but I have a pity of 600. As for going all in on the new Eldain, it depends. I'm actually expecting the new unit to be somewhat overpowered, not because it's an anniversary unit necessarily, but because of it being rumored to be a calm (water) element unit. There's been some complaints recently about how underpowered calm is, so I could see them giving them a meta unit. Might make calm teams viable, it depends.
