Below ground is Tolkien orcs, they're sickly and depraved but rather cunning, above ground is Warcraft orcs and they're sanguine and muscular but a bit dim. A minority of the above-ground orcs are noble savages (i.e. they won't kill you unless they think it's self-defense). This fulfills Tolkien's desire to show orcs growing up in a better environment and choosing to be better. It's also a commentary on what happens if you spend too much time in the dungeon.

Orcs are thankfully easy to recognize from other humanoids by their size, commonly forty pertans in height and fifteen thousand angaids in weight, their brutal pig-like features, and their stench. They are consistantly belligerant, morally grotesque, intellectually moronic, and unclean. By all rights, the civilized races of Tamriel should have been able to purge our land of their blight eras ago, but their ferocity, animal cunning, and curious tribal loyalty has made them inevitable as leeches in a stagnant pool.

Tales of orcish barbarity preceedwritten record. When Jastyaga wrote of the Order of Diagna joining the armies of Daggerfall and Sentinel “to hold the wicked orcs in their foul Orsinium tower … and burn all” in 1E 950, she assumed that any reader would be aware of the savagery of the orcs. When the siege was completed thirty years later, after the death of many heroes including Gaiden Shinji, and the destruction of Orsinium scattered the orc survivors throughout the Wrothgarian Mountains, Jastyaga wrote, “the people rejoiced for their ancient enemy was dispersed.” Obviously, the orcs had been terrorizing the region of the Iliac Bay at least since the early years of the first era.

History:

Was never one for boar orcs until dungeon meshi did them really well.

Been basing my OSR orc stuff off of them with a mix of nomadic tribe culture where they hunt megafauna. Their routes have them head from stationary waypoint to waypoint, at which there'll be actual settlements that manage crops as it's the only place they'll actually grow.

I was never fond of any typical portrayal of Orcs in modern fictional settings. If anything, Tolkien's depiction of them has always been the middleground to me. BUT, the one aspect that seems to be completely overlooked novadays is that Orcs are Elvish in nature. Based on the speculation of their origin mentioned in The Silmarillion (they were considered for feral Moriquendi at some point), I never really thought of them as a separate race, they'd make so much more sense as an "evil twisted cousins of regular Elves" subspecies (basically, a stand-in for Dark Elves, as you may call it). I usually prefer to envision them as more independent beings rather than mooks of some greater evil, however, their nature should always remain explicitly vicious. And they are not a lively folk, due to their dark troubled past and long history of being affiliated with evil.

To elaborate on their nature a bit: in my vision Orcs, despite being related to Elvish folk, are mostly feral creatures without inclination to form any kind of "sophisticated" societies. If anything, their social structure is close to your typical tribalism, they are also very dedicated to nomadic lifestyle (as Tolkien strongly associated them with Turkic and Mongol archetypes). They mostly keep to themselves but can easily turn hostile towards any other race, as by their dark nature they are prone to violence.

and finally, a little about their appearance: I strongly despise both, cartoonish green-skinned orcs and gnarly grimdark monstrosities. Everything is good when in moderation and without extremities, so I usually stick to the medium. By that I mean that Orcs indeed should look like ugly and unpleasant creatures, but not exaggeratedly hideous. To put it in a simple way... picture a bunch of gaunt and wiry creatures with skin of various shades of greyish and sallow, the predominant hair color is pitch-black, their faces are somewhat repulsive and distorted, but you can still make out subtle elvish features (of course, the ears should stand out the most, lol). Ape-like faces and cartoonishly large muscles (like Warcraft orcs) are a big no-no, absolutely.

Appearance-wise, porcs with tusks and short fur. In comparison to the "tall and muscular lime-green human" look, I think boar-like orcs look more wild and savage, but also more aesthetically pleasing. Making them look like animals is an (admittedly lazy) shortcut to making them look like they belong in the natural world.

Lore-wise, I like the idea of orcs originating from transformed members of another race. The elves in my setting already have enough shit going on, so I'm thinking I'll make orcs the descendants of a tribe of humans that were so bent on conquest that they pledged themselves and their descendants to some dark god in exchange for power. They were granted unnatural strength and mental affinity for battle, and an animalistic appearance to match it. As a trade-off, their natural lifespans were reduced, and the aforementioned god now has claim over their souls. They got what they wanted out of their "blessings", though.

Different orcs for different settings:

OSR inspired medieval setting: "They are evil poured in to shape of man in a horrible mockery of gods' order! They eat babies! They rape cattle! They are raiders!"

1600s setting: "They are horrible barbarians! They attacked Dwallia with no provocation and are fighting against Trolls of Halmar. They take good Monillists as slaves! And what's worse, they worship Gaoren wrong, the heretics! (But they produce nice furs and ores)"

In both settings Orcs are colored with earth-tones (so brown like sand, not brown like coffee au lait), mid-height, have fangs and pointy ears but no snouts. They are mid-sized, often with poor postures and rickety legs. Also, they are inventive, cruel and lazy: they prefer to rob or buy tech to bullding it themselves but can and will build serviciable if ugly weapons and fortifications. So, like nomadic tribesmen and later like kingdoms of Rus.
