They trained hard to be 100% physically at the end of every season because they were always almost head-to-head for the league or the champions league until the end of may (usually two weeks before the WC). When the season ended they were physically exhausted. Spain is the perfect example, they had two teams playing the CL final, semifinals and the league until the very end of may in 2014, they sucked at the WC, being outperformed physically by the netherlands and fucking chile. Messi joined PSG and he basically didn't give a fuck about the team. He even faked injuries to skip matches to be 100% physically in december (half the season, not the end of it). You have to add that both had shit teams, messi (2010 and 2018) and cristiano (2010, 2014 and 2018). The difference is that when messi had great teams, he got his ass saved, while cristiano got benched and he was already old enough to dribble past my grandma.
