>>4307072If you’re just going to do bw, it’s pretty braindead simple, and there are developer options that are long lasting and economical (rodinal, hc11, d76). Shit you could even use coffee and vitamin c powder, it really doesn’t take much for bw. Colour isn’t worth it unless you shoot lots, or you save up your rolls and have a bulk development day to maximize your chems.
>>4307087>>4307090>piss easySo I've heard. I assume this isn't the case for B&W reversal though? Maybe this is what will finally convince me to switch to B&WI've also heard that the process for color is essentially the same, but based on your answers, is this not true? I see little developing reagent sets that say they work for both color and B&W.
>>4307091Ilford had an easy step by step for reversing.
>>4307041First, you have the film backwards. Expose the black side.Second, I'm almost done with a working prototype of an instax mini rb67 back that needs no extra parts except for what you can dig out of a cheap instax camera and the shoulder screws that mount in place of the rotating back.

>>4307091It’s not so much that colour dev is more difficult (it isn’t really, just more finicky), it’s that the chemistry is more unstable and doesn’t store well, so it’s not really worth the time unless you really just want to, or you can maximize the use of the chems.

>>4307235>>4307224Ektar is just their sharp, slow colour neg brand name. They also used to call lenses that. Back in the day they used to make Royal Ektar 25, which I've never had the luck to shoot. Current Ektar is nothing like Reala, which actually had high contrast, neutral saturation, and good shadow colour, in addition to being super sharp. Current ektar is the same old kodak shitty cyan skies, and falls off a clif in the shadows, but with pink skin tones rather than the red in their consumer films and the mud in Portra. I actually don't mind it because it is sharp and contrasty, so like a slide film its best in flat lighting.

>>4307109Portra is only good for skin tones.Ektar is perfect for anything else, it get vivid colors, almost no grain, it's usefull on all kind of days
>>4307297Every digital camera does feel like a toy compared to all metal film gear from before the amazon shopping age. That's digital cameras. Maybe one pentax, some expensive nikon, might feel more solid to you, but that's just because they used a different plastic coating, or designed the detents in a clicked switch or dial differently.FF is the new medium format because it's the second highest quality and second most expensive standard in cameras now, and approximates the line counting resolution of 645-6x7 SLRs with decent color film. But it doesn't have the look. The largest digital sensor comes on on a five figure camera and is still smaller than 645 film.To get more of a medium format look out of a GFX you'd need to adapt a very fast manual lens, not use fuji's first party lenses, and the third party lenses for GFX are kind of shit desu.

>>4307311The most based point and shoot cameras are fully manual, wide angle, and zone focused, usually with an external ovf. No electronics needed. I won't say they are objectively better, but I do find them extremely enjoyable to use because of their simplicity, and the AF basically all p&s cameras is waaaaay too slow to do anything aside from non-moving subjects. On the other hand you've got a pretty wide focal range to mess around with, and you don't need to carry a lightmeter.
>>4307300>>4307304Ok I’m hearing what you’re saying about build quality. It’s really the viewfinder experience that kills me but I guess a giant MF mirror is hard to beat. >>4307324Everything is just a different look. Gotta try them out to see, or look at some negatives. Larger formats do provide much finer rendering, especially when you get into LF. I would say that color gets finer in some respects as well.

On my Canon FTb QL sometimes, not all the time, the film does not advance far enough between shots and you end up with partial overlapping exposures. This has ruined some really good shots with this camera. After losing shots that I expected to be really great I feel I can't trust this camera and have stopped using it, in fact I've gone back to digital until I either figure it out or get a different film camera. I want to say it happens more often near the end of the film canister than near the start. Is this a common problem with film cameras, and is it self repairable?

Anyone have experience with cell phone light meter apps?Got my first film camera and the camera store lady looked it over for me and aimed it around and told me the light meter looks right. but it's consistently metering way way higher shutter speed than my phone app. I've almost finished a roll, most of it on auto but some of it on manual based on the readings of my phone light meter and am afraid it's going to come back a mostly fucked roll.If it is fucked, what hot shoe light meter have people here tried? I like going on walks with my camera and looking at my phone as little as possible. pulling it out to meter every shot will suck all the fun out.
i currently shoot with a leica but somethings itching in me to buy an SLR as well, especially since im wanting to get into shooting fashion. one of the other reasons is that my 21mm lens has a minimum focus distance of 50cm (which i can use fine with no focus coupling) but there are nikon F mount 21mm lenses that have 20 or 30cm mfd. that being said i havent bought any gear in like over 8 months so it might just be my GAS. idk what to do
>>4307418Use a handheld one to double check/calibrate your phone meter. They work reasonably well. Depending on your lighting and film type you can just take a reading in full sun, and a reading in the shadows. Then switch quickly between the two. It's usually like 3ish stops.>>4307420Get a large format camera. What more would you want for fashion?
>>4307418ive got a phone meter app (android). it has a meter that uses the phones camera to determine it, and another for my phones light sensor (next to the front selfie camera). the meter that uses the camera is absolutely shit and is WAY off, but the sensor one has basically been perfect in the 2 years ive used it over hundreds of rolls. it even reads down to EV 3 ish well (christmas tree lights with no house lights on, at night). just in very sunny days it only goes up to EV 15-15.5 ish, not 16. and you dont need to meter for every shot. i can shoot a roll of slide film and only meter a few times. you just need to meter when the lighting conditions change, e.g. going from indoor to outdoor, sunny to cloudy/overcast, walking into shade etc
>>4307424any recs for a handheld meter?
>>4307424>Get a large format camera. >>4307426Sekonic l608 if you can find one for like 300 bucks. They're superb meters, and will do everything and more than you need. The flash metering is sweet on them. You can hook a pc sync cable into the meter and trigger your flashes to take spot or incident readings. Very useful.Any old incident meter for like 25 bucks will be good if you don't need spot metering. I have a sekonic studio deluxe l-39A that I also love. No batteries is awesome. Apparently you can get a spot meter attachment for it, but carrying excess things defeats the purpose of such a compact meter for me.>>4307427If you're doing more studio type work do not EVER brush past large format cameras, especially monorail style view cameras. You can always get a 120 back for them if 4x5 is too inconvenient. Hell, you could get a rb67 back adapter for your 4x5 and use a 70mm back to have 50 shots per roll on your camera. Having no mfd and tilt/shift is invaluable for more controlled film photography.

>>4307658>arca cubeAnon I wish I had money diarrhea out of my ass but alas, I do not. Maybe I can find a chinkoid knockoff.>do all the lenses provide coverageAlmost. The system was designed around the movements so only the 50mm ultra wide can’t take full advantage due to image circle. The 500mm tele and 100-200 zoom also can’t use movements, but those are physical mounting contraints, I believe their image circles are still technically capable. You only get 12deg of tilts in either direction, not too much, and 15mm hor/13mm vert shift. Certainly not as capable as a full LF but a enough for some flexibility. For my uses it’s plenty. >>4307660Yeah... I don't know any other geared tripod head options. I'm sure there's some good ones that don't have an 80lb capacity like the cube that are reasonably priced... A geared head really is a great investment.Ahh, so the movements are more like a tilt/shift lens than a full on view camera. With some of my largest projection lenses I can tilt like 30+ degrees, and shift like 4 or 5 inches. Still pretty neat it's built in to the camera. I could see it being very useful for certain applications, and you can probably get the miniature effect with it as well!
I got 38 shots on a 24exp roll of Delta 400 this week.So either its wrongly marked and is really a 36Exp, or I loaded it wrong and it slipped. >>4307674There is enough lead to get the number of shots indicated on any 135 film camera. Getting 1-2+ extra is normal, depending of the camera. >>4307737With less movement/features. You're already going for a behemoth, opting for the one the one with less control at the cost of slightly less weight is counter intuitive when going for a camera that's literally that size because of the LF-esq features. What 35mm camera/lens would I need to be able to take the absolute sharpest images possible and pull as much resolution out of a 35mm negative as I can while still sticking to "vintage" gear. These images were taken on a 70-200 L series with Portra 400 and frankly I'm in awe of the quality of this photo. Is this even remotely feasible with lenses that were designed for analogue photography?
I ask this because I bought into a system recently that uses Carl Zeiss lenses and are apparently supposed to be some of the sharpest 35mm lenses ever but I was thoroughly disappointed.
>>4308240Does F6 with whatever modern AF-S lens qualify?
>>4308240pic rel + Fuji Velvia/Provia
>>4308240Voigtlander 50mm APO, Zeiss Otus, some nice slow, small tight grained film.
Idiot here, I just shot a roll of portra 400 and developed it myself. The negatives look ok and I was mostly shooting in direct sunlight so they are nice and thicc, however after scanning the amount of grain seems excessive and not much shadow detail. All the chemicals were new and I autisticly followed the instructions so I'm guessing they are just underexposed? I've heard of people shooting 1 stop over with portra for better results, but could be I fucked something else up. One is the temperature difference between my sous vide machine and thermometer, the thermometer read 0.7 C under the set point so I split the difference which would be just about inside the +/- 0.5 range. There is fuck loads of detail in the highlights, like I can count the layers of cloud but green grass looks like an AI image on lsd.
>>4308244Afaik the F6 is just a consumer variant of the F5 but the metering is the same so unless you need a 7fps film waster yeah its good.
>>4308240Well you need to decide whether you want crystal clear sharp images or you want to be a real cool guy impressing the 17yo girls in the coffee shop for 8 seconds with the crap you bought because they’re “vintage”. If your idea of a good image is edge sharpness, then ok, that tells you what you need to use, and it’s not classic gear, not 35mm, and probably not film at all. If fashionable accessorizing is more important bc you’re mainly focused on your self image, then hang an old Leica around your neck on a leather strap made out of an old boot lace. Either way, you have some shit to get through yet on your journey.
>>4308210Is this at cannon beach? I have a strikingly similar image to this one somewhere
>>4308260It is cannon beach, but further north from ecola state park
>>4308240there's nothing special about the iq in these photos besides them being taken with a fast, long lense and scanned and edited properly; there's no motion blur but they're not even particularly well focused.any first party prime lenses from the 70's onward should produce images just as sharp, but if you really want a good 70-200/2.8 then you are best off shooting modern glass; that said most brands made a decent 180 or 200mm f/2.8.if you're unhappy with your zeiss results then your shooting technique is probably not great and your scans are almost certainly garbage.
>>4308258Edge to edge sharpness just means you dont have to center details like a beginner and most zeiss and leica lenses offer it
>>4308240All canon made EF lenses work on EOS film cameras. Just use the 70-200 lBy analog did you mean silver box larp? Uhhhhhhh leica body+voigtlander 35mm f2 apo
>>4308237You know I had read that taking pictures of your negatives was better, but I just didn’t expect the difference to be that significant. And like I said the scanner was only 20 bucks so I’m not mad about it lol, I’m going to be starting to use instax in the near future once I figure out how to stick it on my camera, so it’ll be useful then.>using the RF macro?Nah too rich for my blood. Got one of the chinesium Laowa macros, the 100mm 2:1 for ef. Nice little thing. Coulda got it for RF but I thought maybe I’d use it for my ef cams also, worked out. 2:1 is neat.

>ground glass focusing screen for SWC>SMC Pentax 67 55mm f/4 lens for Pentax 67Which would make the most sense to buy? They both cost the same (which is crazy) but the pentax lens is not as sharp as the hasselblad. I will be using the lens for closeup spread eagle and creampies, leaning to the pentax just for the negative size, but I do know the image would be bettwr with the SWC.
if there was an analog system to buy into for wildlife, what would it be?biggest points would be ease of focusing and good telephoto options.

If it was 5x the price, that might be a reason, but it isn't?Bad lateral CA's are a big one on crappy wideangles, and also slow apertures that make low light focusing very hard. Also the fact that most vintage stuff 24mm or wider won't be as sharp in the mid-frame at f/11 as a modern lense is at 2.8.Fast & long lenses with longitudinal CAs and spherical abberation out the ass just do not compare to newer ones visually, let alone in terms of sharpness. >>4308819>I don't own a dogYou rent them? How much for a night?
>>4308820>>4308824The two dog fetishists on this board are mr dog hair, with the german shepherd blowing the farm inheritance on LF film, and the husky one who will hopefully be staying the fuck out of the FGT now he's bought a z7. He happened to post just after me, we aren't the same person.
>>4308809>>4308803Sounds like I'm better off just keeping a diff film system for 35mm
>>4308847Wanna hear a secret? If you get a job, even mediocre one, you can literally buy any film camera and shoot with it whatever you want. With a bit of money you can have FUN.>Verification not required.
>>4308807Idiot. You've been talking to the hyper autist that has spent all his time, effort, and money on digitizing his film, but has never taken a single picture more interesting than rock, flower, or stick in his entire life. He is nothing but a soulless record keeper and film scanner.[EXIF data available. >>4308851>If you get a jobBut that's not fun.
>>4308851You can even start shooting large format for less than some of the snapshitters on here pay for a single 35mm lens with far better results.A great side effect of large format photography is that it reveals all the nophotos so well. You can REALLY tell they know absolutely nothing about the cameras or the technical aspects of shooting one. It's great.
>>4308853you have 8 hours of your day left to take photosthat should be enough, right anon?

>>4308868Wrong, and wrong, and you sound retarded calling albumen prints difficult.Let me guess. When something breaks you cry, toss it in bin, and buy a new one immediately?
