/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is (generally) bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
>if you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

This was shot with a Hasselblad 500CM.

Yeah I took his portrait and then realized I didn't use the mirror lock up so I quickly turned around and asked to take it again. I've been told anything under 1/60 will have a noticed difference so that's what I do now.

Is it actually that noticeable in faster settings, like 1/60" and up, though?

I didn't shoot for almost 4 months after I had a baby. I shot a few rolls recently and felt terrible about my photos. I didn't like the composition, I didn't like the objects I chose, the light, literally everything was bad, I couldn't even develop it properly.
But now I see your pictures and it makes me even worse because now I'm starting to like the crap I took. I'm horrified.

Nothing personal bro

Everything is handheld, and that 4x5 is pretty centered if I crop the black film edge. I took the shot because I loved the blue sky and golden beige sand. The wave might be throwing you off, it's pretty close to centered horizon for eyeballing it handheld.

It's not interesting to anyone else, even to me besides maybe the color. I'm not going to ever formally post it anywhere online since it was like my 6th shot with the camera ever but I loved that afternoon and so it makes me smile even if it's uninteresting.

Topcon Super D repair came out good, test roll was nice.

Had some streaks on the film mid way through the roll but they are not consistent with a camera issue so something probably happened in development or scanning but i dont care it was a 5 dollar BW400CN test roll to verify the camera worked.

We didn't have a discussion before. I know nothing about you promises, just commented the photos I seen. In any case, garbage is just an object, everything else is nothing but photographer's eye.
Don't take it too close. You can fucking around and protect your bad photos or you can do some lessons learning for free.
>You are agonizing over perfection and not even posting photos.
Posted in previous tread (4 pics of svema, adox, bergger, orwo) and as I said I think they are bad as well, so I don't want to multiply garbage pics. Just unhappy that no-photo pause can affect the eye and hand so much, even for relatively short period of time.

Is this digital noise in those white bricks over the tank, to the left, or is blown out in the film itself?
Not bad for $5 indeed, but I'd recommend Kentmere
It's $6 a roll and it's a really good film
Not "good enough for it's price", but actually good film

I think I’m leaning to the 500CM and replace it with a rolleiflex 2.8 I can’t see a situation where I’d pick the 500cm up over the rollei and between the 645 and SWC I think I have most other situations covered. The 500cm is just a beast off of a tripod in anything but sunlight.

lads, just looking to get into negative scanning and i saw this flatbed for sale locally forr cheap. i know you all probably prefer the whole camera "scanning" rig setup, but if i can get the guy down to 20 bucks, is it "good enough"? anyone still use a flatbed scanner? apparently this was canon's top of the line consumer product at the time for negative and photo scanning. i might just set up a camera scanner eventuyally anyway since i have a camera, just need to look at making holders and shit.

As a former pen and watch collector, eventually you have to create some kind of scheduled rotation if you want to avoid having shelf queens. It sounds stupid I know, but it’s either that or get rid of things you actually like but don’t use much for whatever reason. If I have 10 watches and really like them all, but there are only 7 days in a week, well, you need to preplan that shit out, that sort of thing. Other people might be like “only keep the ones you truly like” but what do you do if that’s still a large number?

>do think that is the film,

It's not noise, but it is a digital artifact, essentially highlight clipping. The ancient scanner he's using is unable to blast through the bricked highlights where his B&W film is over-exposed/over-developed.
That's what a "d-Max" rating shows; how dense a slide/neg can be, as measured with a densitometer, before the scanner can't accurately discern tonal gradation.
With camera scanning, especially if you're using a flash, you don't run into this kind of limitation so quickly, because you can just turn up the exposure.
>>4302710
This scan is showing noise (ie where the input to the scanner is the same but the output varies randomly) likely because the neg is too thin/underexposed and the curve applied to get a full scale of tone is too steep, exaggerating the read noise. If anything this highlights the limitations of these old-tech potato scanners more than the other ones; they use a (old-tech, noise prone) CCD line scanner and step it across the face of the film with a motor. With anything less than perfect negs going in, or even with a good neg trying to do a heavy edit, you show up these issues.
Pic related shows an *extremely* thin neg (dead developer), that I was still able to get a terrible image out of because the camera file is so clean. The speckles are from hard water, the halo around the edge is actually the flash illumination falloff.

I've never used either, so I didn't know about that
The SWC seems to have really nice glass indeed
Anyway, as I've said previously: keep what you use, sell what you don't
It doesn't really matter if a camera has the best glass ever made if the owner doesn't use it
Things are made to be used

Would there be any negatives to shooting a wide angle only lens?
>>

You might become too based. Hoping to score a 47mm lens for my 4x5 camera soon!! That's 12mm equivalent.

The DoF is so massive you don't need to worry about focusing at like f8.

How do I get over the “fear” of wasting film when shooting? I don’t know if that makes sense but I’m new to the film side of the hobby. The way film forces you to pay attention and make your shots count appeals to me but it’s still a nagging feeling.

And I dug up the scan for verification.
For everyone who says Rodinal lasts forever, and that R09 One Shot is the same, either it doesn't, or it isn't.
This was developed in 1:50 for 14 minutes with inversions every minute, from a bottle that was mostly full, but first opened 2 years prior.
Rollei Retro 80S, exposed at 80, in a Nikon FE.
Frame numbers barely showed up.

F5 is best value for money. F100 is lighter, but cost almost as much as the F5 which has many more features and is built like a brick shit house. F6 is built like the F5 but they're still like 1000 bucks for one.

F5 is the nice happy median between price and build quality. The AF is amazing on the F5 and the AA battery pack with a set of new Eneloop batteries will outlive you. I charged my set up when I bought it two years ago and have put probably 20 rolls through it and still showing max power.

Took it on a hike through Moab pic related and it was like 100 degrees outside it does not give two shits. I dropped it loading a roll of film like an idiot it just keeps going. The F5 is the Ford 300 I-6 of the 35mm world, when aliens discover our remains of our civilization 50000 years from now they're going to find one of these things and finish the roll of film in it.

F5 and F3 w/motor drive are the GOAT for Nikon 35mm. Honorable mention to the original F as well, also GOATed.

Nice to know, man, thanks for the detailed reply
I got an F50 that belonged to my father, but as I said before I'm not a fan of electronic cameras
And of course, the F50 is not even a pro-level camera. I think I've only ever shot 2 rolls with it in... 5 years or so
It's just not my thing
But holy shit, it makes taking pictures absurdly easy, especially when shooting moving subjects
Picrel was taken during an open air concert and I don't think I would be able to capture it the way I did with a fully mechanical camera
I'll try to use it more, it's a good camera
>>
>>4303128

Here's the thing about those Fxx cams (here in the States they are N models) they have the exact same features in some cases as the F5 and F4. Automated exposure. AF. In the case of the N90s/F90x it can drive AF-S lenses just like the later F5. Exposure bracketing. Auto rewind and advance.

With the F5 and F100s you're paying for build quality, ability to handle a drop, weather sealing and lens compatibility with AF-S, image stabilization compatibility as well as improved autofocus. They all take the same picture. I have an original N2000 and I can drive my 85/1.4D with it.

F50 is a decent camera put good glass on the front and it will take the same picture as an F6 or F6.

any idea why it would only happen to the first few frames or why some rolls are totally fine?

Is it bulk loaded film? I usually lose a couple frames with my bulk loaded film.

When I shot AF-D lenses, which those are, my Holy Trinity was Nikon 28-105 f3.5-4.5, 50 1.4 AF-D and 70-210/4 AF, all very good lenses. You can buy them for a song now

The leader broke off at the point where it is inserted into the take up spool. Might have been my bad, Foma has a thinner base than Kodak and Fuji and I might have pulled on it too hard to verify it was taken up in the camera once the door was closed.
>>
>>4303167
Sometimes it's light piping from the film leader when you load it. Some bases do that unless you load in shadow.

Actual rodinal just didn't go bad, I wasn't trying to save old chems or anything, I just assumed it would be fine. I subsequently tried another roll at 1:25 and for a longer time that wasn't quite as badd but still didn't dev to full tone, so I won't be using this bottle again. Sucks, because there's really no way for me to get through a 500ml bottle that quick at 1:50 unless I just go ham on the retro 80s, that's the only film I use it for.

Because for people with smaller language representation it is not so easy to find a group with the same interest they have, especially if we are talking about something not very poplar like photography in general and analog photography in particular.

So, if my theory is correct and if we ill take two guys from here, one from murica and one from Czech republic, murican will be almost always a human garbage with some mental issues, but Czech have a lot of chances to be a nice guy with family, work, not retarded or creepy.

this might be more of /gear/ question, but it does concern the late film era.
when you look at late film SLRs many of them have the "standard" PSAM dial (or P Tv Av M or whatever), just like later digital cameras.
Did Nikon steal that design from Canon, or the other way around?

oh wow that's way earlier than I assumed, I was guessing it was came along with the EF mount, although I still suspect that's when it reached its fully modern form factor
>>
>>4303463
Early EF cameras didn't have PASM dials, actually.

But boy modern controls are the fucking best. Runner up is the glorious OM system, and any camera where the shutter wheel on top can be thumb actuated or easily turned with the index finger. If it's tiny and short, or the wind lever blocks it.

If you have to rock the camera around and pinch things it sucks - OM2+'s EC dial is like this and I fucking hate it.
>>
>>4303464
Huh. I once had a film "Rebel" that had a completely DSLR-style wheel with scene modes (portrait, sports, etc) and everything. I wonder if the wheel started with the more consumer level SLRs and worked its way (partly) up.

Disagree.
Context sensitive controls require me to pay too much attention to the camera.
Give me an aperture ring on the lense and an auto position on the shutter speed dial, and a self timer lever that pre-fires the mirror and I'm in heaven. Glance down and know what it's about to do when you push the button.
Oly OM10 thru 40, nikon fe/2/fm3, pentax me.

Well aperture controls the look of the photo so you should really be setting it for any photo that's not a middle distance snapshot of a central subject.
So for me that's the most important control.
And aperture by extension controls the shutter speed, so I don't really need to know what it is; I know from the film I'm using and the ambient light level whether I'll be handheld or not.
I shoot with modern cameras as well, but I find it irritating to have to peer through the finder to check what aperture I'm set to (and if ev comp is set), and then scroll to get to the desired one.
>a few identically presented lcd numbers
>is this one iso or ev comp or shots remaining or shutter speed or aperture or a c.fn menu
>just carry a printed manual everywhere to check what those fuckers are, btw
I mean I appreciate their versatility, but at the end of the day they all take the same photos, and 99% of the time the extra features just clutter the ones I actually use.
What's a better kitchen tool, a good knife or a thermomix?

Is there a consensus on canon's modern 35mm layout? I like the 1v for the most part, but dislike how you need 2 fingers to switch between one shot and ai servo AF. The single point focus selection is a little clumsy as well. Overall quite nice, and feels very similar to my 5dm3.

Unlike all the super serious fine art nophotos I am just out here having fun. I will take 10k photos of my dog and become a master photographer recognizing the superficiality of it all the while.

Those are actually quite rare cameras so it's usually significantly more, but I got a really great deal on mine the other day. Sinar just didn't make many of them...

I got an enormous jvc 3ccd vhs camera for 80 bucks at a local auction, so I have been getting into dog based cinematography lately. It's really quite fun, and the horrific vhs quality has that soul I've been looking for...

Were the dogs cute at least?

My sinar handy comes with a 12mm equivalent lens... I love how challenging it is to use very wide angle lenses. Wide angle lenses are also really nice because I set the camera's DoF to like 2 feet to infinity and just focus on the moment. Cameras like the sinar handy are truly the thinking man's point and shoot.

it's nice to see more portraits here
the thread already started with two, we got like more than 10 in the thread whereas we usually have none
More than 10 where people up close are the central/focal point (neither central nor focal necessarly in the literal sense, but it's hard to find a word that isn't ambiguous)
At least like 5 that are unequivocally portraits
And more than one being self-portraits, which I think I haven't seen in a long time on this entire board in general

>>
>>4303799
Sort of relevant here - I work at a film lab and when I get Japanese customers coming in to pick up their negatives they say "I want to pick up nega" but obviously given their accent and inability to speak fluent English it ends up sounding very much like "nigga" or one time one Japanese lady even pulled the hard R.
>>
>>4303788
I shot TMax and Delta 3200, but very long ago and already very expired. Also Retro 400S more recently (didn't like it as negative lmao, but I got it mainly to do reversal, which I'm yet to get around to).
Anyway I was running low on my faster films, so I restocked. And I like variety, hence the oddities like JCH and Wolfen, not to mention the Rollei sampler.
I guess besides being stocked for lower light the main thing I want to find out is whether to stick to HP5+ as my go-to 800 film, or use Delta instead.

it is inconsistent. You can make it for fun or for some stupid achievement, nobody stops you.
Or you can do it n professional way with clear ingredients, weights and shit. But I believe this is not the way you are asking about.

I'm talking about recipes which were made for some specific needs and films and made with clear ingredients and not with things from drugstore nor grocery store, not like the generic recipe from retarded youtuber who made "wow-reaction" video.
You can do a research on photrio.com forum, there are a lot of guys who works with caffenol for years and they have recipes for classic emulsions, tabular, for pushing, pulling, etc.

>>4303816
I don't know but freezing unshot stock is more stable than film that's already been shot. It's actually pretty interesting if you have a roll that's half shot and half unshot and you freeze it then you decide to finish up the roll you'd see that the older photos will have a color shift while the new photos will have less or none. Who would have thought that "develop promptly after exposing" mattered. Almost as if they printed it on the box for a reason.

I think I can fix that, but yeah the blotches, and discoloration and serious loss of information seems to be the film finally reaching the end of its life despite most stock being frozen. Don't know about The Darkroom sucking since I never used them, but they always struck me as an overpriced grift to leech posers, mostly lomofags.
My personal go-tos are Blue Moon Camera and Underdog Film Lab. I've had very slightly better service and quality experience with Blue Moon, and they come out cheaper if all you do is 135 in standard C41. But any special requests (push/pull etc.) or E6 or other formats and it quickly gets pricy.
Underdog baseline is more expensive, but it's flat rate for all processes and formats, and extras don't cost as much. And they give you free pre-paid shipping label to send the film in, so you save about 10 bucks there.
But at the end of the day they come to within a few dollars difference, at least for my orders.
Also Blue Moon's scans from 120 were top notch (color negative and slide), however I never got any from Undersog.

It's the judicial wing of the North Dakota state capitol complex in Bismarck. Most of that side of the building is offices for the Supreme Court justices and their staff, but there is a cafe on the ground floor. The cafe is open to the public so I'll see if I can get some shots of how the light comes through next time I'm there. I was planning to go back next week when it's open and get some inside shots of the legislative wing anyway, it's a really cool building.

Just like they print 3200 on the box but it's actually 1000 speed. It's just a guideline like they say on the box to store below 20 degrees, and how people think that if it's one day past the film expire date then it's turned bad and should be thrown out.

It looks like some of my unmixed blix separated from the rest of the solution, has anyone had this happen? Will it be alright if I try to mix it back together with some warm water? I've been trying to agitate the bottle but nothing's changed. It's been in my closet unopened for like two years...

It was developed in D-76, have you noticed lots of variability in kentmere with different developers? If I recall, the light was rather dull that day, so that could also explain the results. I have only shot that one roll, since I didn't much care for the look.

Shot some Ferrania Orto just fooling around. While it was nothing new or groundbreaking it was a decent film to shoot. Not worth the price over triX though.

Yes, amongst other things...

The gitzo tripod and arca swiss cube were probably the best camera related purchases I've ever made in terms of objective improvements to my photography. It's a dream to use that combo.

The picture is pretty nice. Don't be mean.

are you new? large format doghair man is well known to have more money than sense, he said at one point that he basically got a large inheritance and this is all he spends it on lol.
>>
>>4304436
I'm not him but also didn't know. I tried to ignore this shitposter after 2nd thread he spammed with his pics.
But damn, this multi-kilos $ gear looks really funny compared with the end result. This is so stupid and pointless lol
>>
>>4304437
Try not to be so gullible. Sounds like you have absolutely zero experience using a view camera or any sort of alternative process photography.

Once I varnish my wetplates I may try to scan one for people to see. Even if nature abstracts aren't your thing, which I get, the plates look beautiful, and capturing these images is a highly technical, steep learning curve, and time consuming process. Please don't be such a dumb nophoto.

I am starting to do my first wetplate portraits now that I'm gaining consistency and a feel for exposure times, but I can't show them because of all the losers that troll these threads...
>>
>>4304438
less words. read more carefully
>I tried to ignore this shitposter after 2nd thread he spammed with his pics.
>>
>>4304435
Do something about alternative process like wetplate colloidion, or daguerrotype. Toss an ultra large format camera in the mix.

Doing all this wetplate is making it so difficult to not buy an 8x10 camera. I must get even better with 4x5 plates. The ebay deals are calling to meeeeee.
>>
>>4304439
Do you know what the word tried means? You should t-r-y to take your own advice, maybe.
You're not getting much more out of me. I know how you love to start this bullshit after the thread limit, nophoto.
>>
what does an enlarger do? isn't it just a lens and a light source? i feel like i could make a tiny homemade one with just the enlargement lens and a led. am i missing something?
>>
>>4304472
you are wrong but not so much. Just missed a couple of details like condenser, focusing mechanism and print size changing. And also you will need to attach light source to the timer somehow. And another moment you need the light from the light bulb to turn on and off instantly without delay.
So no, LED is not ok.
But you still can do some DYI project which will provide some kind of result and show it to your class.
>>
>>4304472
>enlargement lens
any lens will do, enlarger lenses are stupid expensive for no reason
The hard part is getting the light flat and even, that's what the condenser does
>>4304474
>And also you will need to attach light source to the timer somehow
just git gud and count seconds
>light from the light bulb to turn on and off instantly without delay.
LEDs turn on and off far faster than incandescent, stop buying dollar store shit bulbs
>>
>>4304472
This is one of the simplest designs for an enlarger. It's called the intrepid enlarger, and they look pretty cool. It's like a reverse 4x5 camera. Fairly inexpensive, but you can get cheaper off ebay.
