I visited Poland back in 1977 with my ex-pat parents and my older cousin drove us around in his Polski Fiat taxi and I was regularly seeing people walking down the road holding up a piece of white paper with a large red dot on it. I asked him what it was and he said it was a hitchhiking voucher. Seems people could buy pads of these vouchers and when someone gave them a ride, you gave the driver the voucher which they could redeem at gas stations.

I went hitchhiking across the US Summer & Autumn of 2017, maybe 100 rides altogether. All that time I got picked up by women twice and truck drivers three times. One of the great things about hitchhiking is that boring people don't pick you up. The two types of truckers I met were Old and Crazy. Old guy talked about how all truckers used to pick people up back in the day, before they had cellphones and podcasts they needed other people to talk to. He said the companies came down hard on truckers for having anyone in the cab who wasn't licensed, which meant no more friends, family members, or hitchhikers. Guys lost their jobs for trying to help people. So the ones who still do are rare, and are willing to tempt fate breaking the rules - and they're crazy. Had the opportunity to hitchhike and pick up a few travelers on Hawaii, seems to be one of few places where hitchhiking is a common sight.Each had a lesson, most memorable was picking up a middle aged woman who casually invited me to come check out the commune she stayed at, after saying no words of thanks for the ride, which was a suspiciously short distance to the beach.
