First, they do have a child as >>23320204 says.

Second, it's modeled after medieval romances which were almost always extramarital affairs that either resulted in no children or illegitimate children. You have to remember that the purpose of marriage was not love, but bearing children and passing down your property/legacy. Love was moreso something people stumbled upon (like in Beren and Luthien's story) whereas marriage was very intentional and planned and not considered very romantic until very recently in history. As a Catholic, Tolkien just removed the adultery and bastard offspring to try to make a more idealistic version of this spontaneous, yet destined meeting of two lovers.
