T-55 has decent armor, all things considered.
100mm upper frontal plate angled at like 50 degrees and a pretty damn good turret . .

No wonder NATO is panicking and why they hide behind Ukraine; The only chance they had was when they had some Soviet leftovers. Now that they are down to using westoid trash everything is collapsing. They probably confiscated all the remaining Soviet gear to protect Warsaw like it would change anything or prevent battle of Berlin 2.0 this summer.
>>
>>61566865
I’d imagine that Javelins also don’t particularly care about some plates of scrap iron. But sure, turning a tank into an assault gun abominaton like that makes it pretty much invincible to current drones, so while they’re a dumbfuck idea for a against a well-equipped army, maybe there is some idea for them in a place where your enemy is currently under-equipped.
>>
>>61567036

The volumetric armor probably changes the tank’s shape enough to make top attack less effective at finding the best parts of the tank to hit

According to the source, FPV's have to try and aim for the tracks to take them out, but they often loose signal once they start flying so near the ground, making interception difficult.

T-55 has good armor for its weight class, which is about 39 tons when fully loaded. 205mm turret front/120 glacis, that's better than the Leopard 1, AMX-30, or M10 Booker.
What it sacrifices to achieve this is bad situational awareness and cramped inner conditions: Soviets had to limit the size of their tankers so they could fit within the cramped confides and still do their jobs.

IIRC, its engine is the same as the one on the T-72, so the additional shit turtle-mode add doesn't burden it any worse than it would being on the heavier vehicle, but jury's out on whether the casemate box is practical for anything.

Why not just have a bunch of wires sticking out of it like a porcupine? Drone flies in and its props get tangled and it blows up.

This thing gets stopped by every modern anti-tank weapon there is and all guided or corrected artillery fired at it. It's an MBT repurposed to clear minefields while deflecting shitty FPV drone fitted with surplus shit RPG-7 single stage warheads. Everyone is all retarded about it, but my best guess is that this thing is being used somewhere were the Ukrainians do not have any proper AT weapons in place and the Russians are fielding some rag tag bullshit forces as well. I doubt that
>TOW's
>Javelins
>APFSDS rounds
would give a single fuck about that retarded stand-off armor. They'd simply vaporize it. This thing is equally embarrassing for the Russians as it is for the Ukrainians. One because they can't into proper counter for shitty FPV drones, the other because all they have are shitty FPV drones.
>>
>>61569887
Please let there be an effigy upgrade before they run out of tanks
>>
>>61569966
all these wunderwaffen have a great chance to miss such tank, and anyway are of low importance in this war. FPV drones barely can penetrate a tank unless operator is lucky and hits one of few vulnerable areas, but they are (1) in order of two magnitudes cheaper than wunderwaffen and three to four orders of magnitude than a tank, (2) hopelessly outrange their targets, (3) don't expose operator to the retaliation fire, (4) don't require much experience to use them effectively. It's revolution which is comparable only to the very first firearms when they were fielded against much more powerful (on paper) professional knights and bowmen. When the knight reaches positions of enemy he usually wins, takes that treeline, but the problem is to pass through that last literally mile.
>>
>>61570026
>Order of magnitude cheaper
100% true, thus they are imrpovised and somewhat effective AT weapons, but effectiveness greatly overstated like you already said/implied (which we have seen before, with panzerfausts and shit)
>Hopelessly outrange their target
This is highly dependent on both terrain, drone used, payload carried and even weather conditions. Still severely outclassed by Javelins at 4km and Kornets at 8km. Effective firing for a t-72 is given as between 2000-3000 meters in day time conditions.
>don't expose operator to retaliation fire
This is highly dependent on who are involved, on face value this is completely true, but if SIGINT units are thrown into the mix enemy artillery should be able to pinpoint immediately since you're constantly emitting to the drone, all it would take are some mortars or even howitzers to vaporize your location since it becomes a priority target.
>don't require much experience to use them effectively.
I have flown a drone like this a one or twice, it was weird, no doubt you get better at it. Might be easier than firing a Kornet or Javelin and need less formal training, but just barely.

If anything FPV drones are being described as wunderwaffe, which they clearly aren't, they're imrpovised contraptions, necessities even, because actual purpose built systems do a way better job than.
>>
>>61565783
Lovely aesthetics. Utterly ridiculous idea but who cares.
>>
>>61570053
ATGMs are direct LOS weapons, they are very dangerous for the operators. That's why remotely controlled Stugna is more effective than Javelin or especially TOW. Also ATGMs are very heavy and more or less static targets. A pack drones can be moved around even by a child.
Operator of a drone stays in a cellar or in a destroyed building and is often invulnerable to artillery fire. There are very few losses of drone operators.
The effective range of a FPV is way more than 10 km against 5 km of Kornet or 2-3 of a tank. The drone does need direct LOS so it can pass over high trees and attack from behind.
>>
>>61565640
ok but what's the point of this? it now can't operate as a tank anymore and has become an assault gun.
Might aswell remove the turret and fit a 152 using it as an su-100 only against infantry, structures and light vehicles. You could also give it a drone to spot targets and link the drone gps data to the FCS of the tank enabling accurate indirect fire.
>>
>>61570088
>The effective range of a FPV is way more than 10 km
I'm sorry but this just sounds incredulous. Especially if you also strap a warhead to a drone. You'd also need quite an emitter that is definitely not in a basement, on top of that there's going to be significant control feedback; also emitting like that should be straight up dangerous.
With the warheads strapped to the drones you most certainly can move about as much of them around as your traditional RPG team could.
Cellars or destroyed buildings offer protection against mortars for sure, I doubt they protect against direct howitzer impacts.
I think people are glamorizing and overstating the effect of FPV drones because of all the propaganda footage that is pumped out around them.
