Are lever actions more popular than ever?
>>
>>61556692
Maplefag here. Very interested in a .357 lever gat due to the inane laws that govern my land at present. Also classy points
>>
Lever action and revolvers have always had a solid, niche following.
>>
More popular than when they were still releasing new model lever-actions in the late 19th/ early 20th century? Fuck no. I'd say they're less popular than even the 1950s and 60s.
>>
>>61556708
Henry Big Boy. Deer slayer, panty dropper
>>
>>61557494
Agreed about both of those points but compared to the 80s through the early 2000s I think they've gotten a lot more popular. Before then you had hunters and old west larpers. Now you still have those people, plus a ton of others who figured out they make great suppressor hosts or who got into them because of vidya.
>>
>>61556692
>popular than ever?
I doubt they are as popular per capita as in like, 1870-1890s, but they sure seem to be more popular than they were in the early 2010s. I think people are just a little tired of AR/AKs so the variety is nice.
>>
>>61557700
>>61557733
There's been a number of fairly recent new models which prove the recent uptick in popularity. I.e. Henry Long Ranger from 2016, the side-gate loading Henry models, Marlins coming from the factory with threaded muzzles, the various "tactical" styled models, there's ones in modern high power pistol cartridges like .454, .460 & .500 S&W.
>>
>>61557757
The only ones in 460 and 500 are BHA, which are $5000 guns. Rossi makes a 454, I had mine converted to a wildcat though.
>>
>>61557991
>The only ones in 460 and 500 are BHA, which are $5000 guns
Yeah, that's kinda my point. There's enough demand that people are buying even fancy high dollar ones.
>>
>>61558547
I'm still awaiting the day that some company comes up with a cheaper alternative to BHA.
A tough 17-4 stainless reciever on an 1886 should only cost around 2k to produce. I actually hope Rossi does ones sometime, but they keep bringing back that stupid Marlin clone.

>>
They’re having a bit of a revival but peak levergat was the 1960s with the boomer westerns
>>
>>61557472
I think as gun owners become more savvy and evolved, this is the natural progression, thus self sustainability is ensured for levers and wheels. But will diminish as "gun culture" slowly fades. Perhaps being the "last men standing" as the semi black guns get banned and eventually break down. The wheels and levers will remain as constant as Fleetwood Mac on classic AM stations.
>>
>>61558640
The reciever isn't ready for 60kpsi which was my point.
It's good for 50kpsi, but can't help but feel it would peen the lugs/morticed and grow excessive headspace under the stress of 500S&W for example. That's what happened to Browing 92s chambered in 454.
My ideal would be having an 1886 reciever made of a stronger metal, chamber it in 50-110 and run it up to 60kpsi. A 7000ft/lbs monster.

Sometime in between 2008 and 2022 they got really popular with the peak in 2021. Nowadays with ruger and sw charging batshit insane prices the hype is dying
>>
>>61556692
>Are lever actions more popular than ever?
No, they'll never be as popular as they were in the late 1800s and early 1900s. That said, their popularity seems to be on the rise, especially in areas where deer hunting went from shotgun slugs only to straight wall rifle cartridges. That's part of the reason I bought a .357 levergun.
>>
>>61557574
There is a reasonable case to be made for the contrary, and some would say Satanic ritual, or putting a scope on a lever gun. I myself am about 60 not/40 for scoping levers. ...maybe 50/50.

Ideal deer setup in the area I hunt (straight wall or shotgun slug only state, hilly forests with max sight ranges under 200 yards): straight wall cartridge rifle with a lpvo or red dot, depending on your preference. I went with a .357 levergun because I wanted one, but a .450 bushmaster AR would also be fine.

Are these boomers in the room with us now and can they spell view? "Gun control" is the long game of death by 1,000 cuts. They will restrict, ban add forms, add fees, limit purchases, limit FFLs, inspect and audit and harass existing FFLs, but ammo for gov.giv contracts, but ammo for export to limit ammo, drive up prices... The only fools who can't see the long ame are jackass retards who don't know history and how bad things really are.
>>
>>61560964
>Are these boomers in the room with us now
yes, I'm replying to it's post.
the reality is that gun control is not a winning issue. there are islands left that want AWBs, remember the nation wide AWB? where did that shit go? in the last 20 years we've had 26 states pass "constitutional" carry laws.
you can stick your head in the fucking sand, but it won't change reality, gun ownership has and is still expanding, and defensive carry restrictions haven't been this free in more than a hundred years.

Browning is also great if you wanna shoot lever gats but with modern rifle calibers while still retaining traditional wood furniture.

>>61557574
>>61559495
I dunno about Satanism but Henry does make lever gats with Free Mason themed engravings, make of that information what you will with how you choose to spend your money.
>or putting a scope on a lever gun.
I think it depends on the lever gat, if it's an antique that's butchered to be able to mount a non period appropriate scope then yes that's heretical but if it's a modern one built to house a scope why not? Especially if it's something nice like a higher end Leupold, Trijicon, or Steiner scope.

>>61556708
They're great alternatives too for folks living in anti fun B& states too. I personally like what Marlin/Ruger and Bondarms are doing by making viable modernized variant's that make mounting modern lasers and optics on them more pragmatic, yeah they aren't the first to do so but they're quite reputable and are chambered in things other than 22lr from Huezil, (not that there's anything wrong with owning some Brazilium, Taurus fixed their QC issues and those stupid little Barkeep revolvers from Herritage are fun). They make for a pragmatic troll rifle in that a limited capacity can do some AR like stuff while still being state legal in say Massachusetts.
>>
>>61556692
I wish Rossi would make a 92 in .327 Federal. I love my 92, but I'm divesting from .357 Mag so I don't shoot it anymore.
>>
>>61563047
>but I'm divesting from .357 Mag
Why?
>>
>>61563128
Because I bought an L-Frame 586 to complement my 92 because everyone talked about how great the revolver was, but it sucked to shoot with .357 Magnum. So I got rid of it, and went back to shooting revolvers that don't beat my hand up. Even 10mm out of my 610, with hot ammo, doesn't bother me like shooting .357 or .44 Mag does.
>>
>>61563169
What grips were you using and what brand of .357 were you shooting?
>>
>>61563556
Pachmayr Presentations

Ammo Incorporated 158gr TMJ
Hornady Critical Defense 125gr FTX
Steinel 125gr SCHP
Underwood 158gr JHP

The Hornady CD ammo was the mildest, and the only one where I could manage a group. The Underwood ammo was the only one to go from uncomfortable to painful.
>>
>>61556692
its too much work to cycle the action
>>
>>61563169
That's because 10mm is a wimpy cartridge and a 610 is a heavy N frame.
You'd be amazed how much velocity the 10mm loads bleed off by not having a closed breech.
Handloading is the best policy if you're only going to be shooting steel and punching paper.
>>
>>61564569
Yes, at times getting out of bed doth sucketh. The universe is expanding, why even live? There is so much pain.
>>
>>61564566
Were you at an indoor range? I find when shooting my .357s at indoor ranges that my groupings turn to shit. I think it's the noise and concussion forces bouncing around every surface that bothers me. Meanwhile, at an outdoor range like pic related where it's only a shooting bench and not a bubch of surfaces for the noise to reflect back at me, I turn into Hickock45 with my Model 19.
>>
>>61556708
I got two Rossi R92s. My thumbs are too big to keep jamming rounds into the tube without getting rekt. I think the spring for the loading gate is rusty. Is indeed stiff.
>>
>>61556692
Ever? No. But they seem like they're on an upward swing.
>>
>>61565002
No, I was shooting in my backyard, since I'm in a rural area. It would definitely have been worse if I was an indoor range.

I feel like I have to be careful at indoor ranges, because I seem to be particularly sensitive to concussion. The last time I was at indoor range, between the guy next to us shooting his AR, and trying my friend's Ruger AR, the concussion from .223/5.56 really bothered me. Very unpleasant, I couldn't even get through an entire AR mag.
>>
Pozzed states like Ohio that require straight walled cartridges for hunting probably helped. When people are looking for “one gun” they could do worse for sure with some of the new market support they’re getting. I don’t own one but I like them. Been eyeing a 45-70 forever but it doesn’t provide much utility for me so it basically keeps getting pushed down the list.
>>
>>61565073
The loading gate on my Rossi 92 was stiff at first, but it got smoother over time. I think they just need a break-in period.
>>
>>61565113
>I think they just need a break-in period.
>Like a woman
>>
>>61565113
I just disassembled the whole thing and slicked up the action. Thinned one side of the loading gate "spring", thinned the extractor, changed the ejector spring lighter, polished a few engagement surfaces that particularly matter like hammer-bolt etc.
>>
>>61565104
Yeah, I feel similarly. Too bad you don't like .357 though. Have you ever tried a Model 27 or Ruger Redhawk? I can shoot the heaviest loads out of my 6 inch Model 27 with factory target grips no problem at an outdoor range. Last time I was shooting it, I was hitting a 10 inch plate at 100 yards no problem from a standing 2 hand position with some Buffalo Bore 180 grain.

Someone has done a good job of pumping you full of fear and anxiety. Don't you remember in 2012 when a classroom full of kindergarten kids got ventilated and nothing happened? Since then, we've got constitutional carry in half of the states and you can 3d print a firearm. Gun rights isn't an issue to ignore, but I think you've got your doom and gloom turned up a few notches too far, buddy.

>>
>>61568319

>>
>>61556692
Probably IL tilting the market a little bit since we can't get ARs now a lot of people are buying level actions here. Some companies see an opportunity to push it to other ban states and non ban alike
>>
>>61567631
>Have you ever tried a Model 27 or Ruger Redhawk?
No, but I had something similar, a Taurus 608. Pretty large and beefy revolver with a ported and an 8-shot cylinder. Was actually comfortable to shoot .357 Magnum out of, even hot stuff like Underwood.

I got rid of it and put the money towards the S&W 586, thinking I'd be replacing it with a more quality gun. Instead, the 586 turned out to be a big disappointment. The Taurus was, ironically perhaps, the better shooter for me.

People often spoke online like the L-Frame 586/686 was the perfect .357 revolver. If it is, it's not for me. Lesson learned.
>>
>>61569617
It's a matter of perspective. I love my Model 19 and my Model 27, but in my Model 19 I tend to shoot more .38 special with the occasional .357. Out of my K frame, I find hot .357 to be uncomfortable, but not intolerable. My Model 27 gets to eat my hot stuff all day and stay pleasant, but the 27 has issues with rapid fire. The cylinder is big and bulky and thus has a lot of mass. Too much mass in some respects. Rapid firing an N frame can cause the heavy cylinder to peen itself. So it's nice for shooting heavy loads, but you don't want to cock the hammer too quick.

The L frame is in between the two in size and is stronger than a K frame and heavier, but not as heavy as an N frame and so it doesn't absorb as much recoil. For some, the L frame is heavy enough to absorb enough recoil to make .357 easy to shoot, but it depends on the person.
>>
>>61568319
45-70 is a perfect round to start reloading on.
straight wall
high commercial cost makes it easy to justify
round count tends not to be super high, so you don't have to make ten thousand of them to get your money back.

Nice, I really want a big bore buffalo shooter 45-70 and those Italian guns keep calling my name. I was trying to talk some geezer out of his 1885 Winchester at a gun show but he wouldn't budge on his retail price for a used one. Lever action would probably be better for hunting anyway.

I don't like the model 1866 or Henry 1860, but that has more to do with their designs rather than the quality. Those are your options if you want a "brass" reciever.
Uberti's stuff is good, most of it they make themselves, but some models they have made for them.
In a 357 Mag, I'd get an 1892 without hesitation, sure it's made by Armi Sport(Chiappa), but the design itself is so much stronger if that matters to you.

Leverguns have been over the last 5-10 years been regaining popularity due to their eternal aesthetic style plus they have some niche uses for civilian use and possibly tactical if you can't afford the nicer stuff. They make a fantastic suppressor host due to a non moving action during firing and their reloading action isn't dumb like a pump action rifle or semi awkward like most bolt actions. They also come in calibers from 22lr for super cheap plinking to pistol calibers that get even better performance in a rifle length barrel like your magnums and then you can have a true North American large mammal stopper with something like a .45-70. Reloading most rimmed straightwall cartridges is fairly easy and forgiving too unlike a lot of more obscure tapered rifle rounds. You also can easily justify a levergun for utilitarian purposes as most of the popular offerings should be legal for hunting.
>>
>>61578613
Nice. What load were you using?
>>
They're just a lot of fucking fun at the range.
No mags to fiddle with, load a few, shoot a few. Your ammo (and therefore money) lasts longer, they encourage more deliberate aiming and shooting, and having fiddly bits is part of design.
My SKS is my favorite semi-auto rifle to shoot because of the internal magazine. I just really like them, even if they're objectively worse for tactical scenarios I don't ever plan to be in with a rifle.
You cannot fathom how badly I want more internal magazine semi-autos.
As a bonus, your levergat and spinnygat can share ammo if you'd like.

Just factory for now, living in an apartment and I don't want to be reloading and storing loose powder in my living space. The woman and I are planning to get a house in the next couple years, so in theory I'll have a garage in which to reload.
>>
>>61586650
Buffalo Bore probably makes the best smmo on the market since it's loaded to old pressure specs.
Their 180gr XTP load uses a lot of Lil Gun, like 15.8gr or so if memory serves.

I'm planning to get some of their .357 hard casts for when I go backpacking next year. I like my Model 13 and I don't want anything bigger, but I want some ammo that could punch through a moose if need be. They say their ammo is rated for any .357 magnums in good condition, so I'm not worried about it kabooming my gun. Recoil will probably be fierce though.
>>
>>61587844
you should get a Ruger GP100 instead for this purpose, the smiths are the reason that nobody makes old spec .357 magnum anymore
>>
>>61587844
Keep in mind that those old Smiths were the reason the pressure spec was lowered in the first place. Don't shoot a lot of them.

She's a beauty.
What are you gonna do with her? Hunting? Target shooting?
>>
>>61585926
you want my JM Marlin 1895? you have to crack the lever a tiny bit to get it to load into the magazine and I got it threaded for a suppressor, but I had them keep the front sight by scooting it back. it shoots fine otherwise and is broadly unmolested.
>>
>>61588015
I'm not a huge fan of cerakote on revolvers, but that one does look pretty clean. my dad has a super redhawk he hasn't shot in 15+ years, so i might just ask him what he wants for that.

>>61588017
Hunting. Perfect for hunting in the woods, and legal in straight wall states. Not much of a target guy. It is a lot of fun to shoot though

The great debate.
>>
>>61588123
I shoot 357 significantly more. Some of this decision is cost and the rest is that it's more comfortable.
My 44 Mag gets shot maybe 1/5th the amount, but it's mote enjoyable to concoct loads for.
>>
>>61587978
but anon, consider this

>>
>>61588123
I pick neither. I like my .32 cartridges, as well as .38 Special for my Model 10s.

That said, .41 Magnum > .44 Magnum >> .357 Magnum
>>
>>61588161
I already have a .357 gp100, I want a .44 mag revolver to go with my .44 mag marlin now. Although I do still want a .357 rifle to go with my gp100 lmao. I didn't plan it out that way, but I had to jump on the marlin when I could. I'm waiting for an old .357. I would love to get an ancient 1892 that was converted to .357 later or something similar
>>
>>61588214
I don't recommend any of the .357 magnum lever guns, it's just not very fun
if you need that particular performance envolope, use a .350 Legend AR-15
my personal recommendation is this instead:
https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/814230010063
>>
>>61588267
You can get very nearly get 30-30 performance out of a 357 Mag handloaded in the right gun. 350 Legend is big time gay.

>>
>>61588267
it's not a rational, performance based thing. i just want one. i have zero interest in a .350 AR, or most ARs for that matter. 45 long colt (standard) out of an 1873 action is more anemic than 357 out of a rifle anyways. toggle link a shit
>>
What would anons recommend if I want a levergun and a wheelgun to share ammo?
Hard mode: With an available top-break revolver
>>
>>61588317
>350 Legend is big time gay.
it's actually excellent and gaining enormous appreciation, but it's irrelevant to this discussion because we are talking about lever guns.
.357 is great in a lever gun because you can pack the case with a slower powder and get really good performance.
if that isn't enough power for you there is 44 and 45-70 (and 358 Win, but guns in that aren't super common anymore)
>>

>I feel like I have to be careful at indoor ranges, because I seem to be particularly sensitive to concussion.
Consume more red meats and fruits/veggies/nuts rich in magnesium and zinc.

>>61585926
Save up your money then?
Have a day every week dedicated to consuming cheap rice and canned tuna (not to cheap though), you don't wanna eat Chinese rice mixed with pieces of plastic made to look like rice grains made to try and inflate the value of said bag of rice, me personally I stick to Vietnamese and Thai rice.
Open your windows when it's breezy rather than running the air conditioner and or wear a jacket indoors if it's cold but not to cold enough to be life threatening.
If it's possible to get to a certain location you need to go to on foot or by bicycle then do that rather than burning gas when you don't have to.
Don't be afraid to pick up pennies (wash your hands afterwords OBVIOUSLY) and be THAT GUY at the convince store who slowly counts their change to pay for a snack or coffee when your out on the road.

I dunno if your poor or just financially responsible but if you do these things for a few months and they'll slowly aid you in your pursuit of obtaining cowboy funs plus ammo.

>>61580607
Uberti is good enough that they get exported to the states and the name hasn't been changed a million times to try and confuse consumers like what happens with other trash guns here.
Get an Uberti or two.

>>61587888
Yeah, I wasn't planning on it. I have a Model 27 that gets to eat the hot stuff, the 13 only gets them as a little treat, otherwise it's mostly .38s and .38+ps. The 13 is easier to carry though, which is why it'll be my backpacking gun.
>>
>>61589480
I don't think you understand, anon
there's two types of .357 magnum and the Smiths break with the weaker of the two
>>
>>61588852
That's Vermont but we're still the most based state south of Alaska in terms of gun laws, possibly more based than Alaska simply because our guns and ammo are probably far cheaper locally. The Free State Project injected about 40k lolberts into our state which has been a decent buffer against antigun stuff.

The frames are weaker and the cylinders have thinner walls than rugers or even smith L frames. K frames already get killed by average 125gr or 158gr ammo from normal manufacturers, so what do you think buffalo bore will do to your model 13?
>t. model 65 owner
>>
>>61588852
I want tube fed for capacity, and 357 for ammo commonality with my GP100. I do have a Super Blackhawk in 44 but I don't shoot it much and don't really stock ammo for it. Meanwhile I have thousands of rounds of 357. Waiting for Ruger to release my ideal Marlin is probably the right move. Also I love stainless, but prefer brown wood instead of synthetic or that grey laminate.

>>
>>61589736
>frames already get killed by average 125gr
True, it's well documented that shooting 125gr or lighter .357 magnum out of a K frame can cause the forcing cone to crack due to the increased velocity.
>or 158gr ammo
Fuddlore, it's also well documented that K frames tolerate heavier .357 magnum bullet weights just fine and the K frame magnums were built to handle 158gr bullets.
>>
>>61589969
Regardless, for my use case it's a complete non-issue. Like I said, I mostly shoot .38s and occasionally .357 magnums from my Model 13. The gun is fine. If I want to shoot .357s all day, I grab my Model 27.
>>
>>61589969
The frames can stretch so much that bushings won't remove the endshake and the rare gunsmith who knows revolvers won't get the timing back quite right. Mine already needs to have the barrel trimmed and set back because the cylinder gap is too big.
>>
>>61590001
Frames never stretch. It's the end of the yoke tube being peened by the cylinder under firing.
>>
>>61588760

Financially responsible, I make good money but I have a wife and 3 kids. To be fair my wife also makes good money. I just feel bad blowing money on myself, done a little too much of that lately. top ejects have more reliable extraction and ejection, in my experience

I let a newbie handle my Marlin 336 once and he short-stroked it and jammed it, but the same didn't happen with the Rossi 92 when he (again) short-stroked that one

why did he keep short-stroking leverguns, you might ask, even after I explicitly explained and demonstrated how to work one to him? that remains a mystery to this day, especially his friend had no issues whatsoever
