can someone explain why Trombley was even with 1st Recon during a fucking military campaign? he didn't even do BRC
>>
>>61560518
The book explains some of the absurdities a bit better.
Basically, the unit we see in the show is a hodgepodge of real hardass recon marines(Brad, Rudy, etc) trained to do all sorts of glownigger ops being reinforced with desk jockey officers(cpt America, Godfather) and regular marines(Trombley) to fill out gaps and being used as tip of the spear assault units, ironically cpt America was right to freak out.

when you really think about it. it's a fucking miracle that they didn't get absolutely wiped. Their only saving grace was that fact that the Iraqis were even more incompetent than them. But if they had went up with a near peer, they would have all died.
>>
>>61564247
I think it was the prevailing obsession with shock and awe tactics pushing the us to use these ill advised shock assaults.

IIRC some units advanced over the border before they could be assured air support.
The amazing thing was that it actually fucking worked because the Iraqis just couldn't figure out where the fuck the coalition speartip was(because they barely knew themselves lol).
Also a fun anecdote I heard was when at the start of the bombing campaign the US decided to drop propaganda leaflets in horrible Arabic onto Iraqi units, which was ineffective to say the least.
However, they accurately dropped those canisters on almost every single Iraqi command position, making IQ officers shit themselves when they realised that the Americans know where they were exactly.
>>
>>61564258
>I think it was the prevailing obsession with shock and awe tactics pushing the us to use these ill advised shock assaults
they went into Iraq under equipped and undertrained. Unarmored humvees? If they had been fighting a near peer, they would have been totally fucked.
>>
>>61555407
As a Ukrainian, I started rewatching it yesterday, and oh boy did I find it relatable. Even a lot of the equipment is the same. Those tents, buying your own stuff all the time, that loud zampolit, the captain America. We used to have all that.
The difference of course is how young and disciplined the Americans are. That's a professional army for you. With that level of competence they'd succeed where we failed, even without CAS and stuff.
>>
>>61564272
How prevalent is "Soviet brain" thinking in the modern UAF?
I always hear about old core officers misunderstanding how to use western tanks and such
>>
>>61564284
We have young officers everywhere, it's not the soviet thinking.
I know what you're talking about. People often ask, why that tank was riding alone without support? Well we'd be glad to send a tank platoon instead, but we only have that one working tank at that part of the frontline, so...
We tried to amass battalion-size elements last summer to get a breakthrough, but it all failed because our reserves were very shallow and low quality. Entire company could decide "nope we ain't going, it's too hot there". Happened with me once, when we were supposed to get help but didn't.
A big mobilized army like ours is messy as fuck.
>>
>>61564312
could you tell me why is the government going through another round of conscription? Is there really a big shortage of men? And aren't poorly equipped, poorly trained, low morale conscripts a liability?
>>
>>61564523
NTA but getting older people to do rear duties will free up the younger and more capable soldiers to the frontline. Also soldiers who went through conscription together tend to be more loyal to their comrades in a defensive war. Unit cohesion is very important to keep morale high so conscription can actually help when there's a clear foreign threat.

the Pacific was just a lot darker than GK or Band of Brothers. The last two made war look fun while the pacific seemed like everything fucking sucked.
>>
>>61564839
I didn't like it at first since I was going to binge it right after band of brothers.
Watched the first 2 episodes and gave up on it.
I gave it a 2nd chance a few years ago and it's really not too bad.
Obviously it doesn't hold a candle to band of brothers but it's still decent in its own right.
Especially the episodes where it starts to focus on the mortar crew with sledge and snafu.

BoB = Medal of Honor: European Assault
The Pacific = COD: World at War
>>

Ironic you should describe it that way considering The Pacific has less action than Band of Brothers. Titties became a regular appearance just to compensate for the lack of firefights

>Seriously, how did they make GK so perfect?
i dont know. it was kind of boring at first but it rapidly became good just seeing all the military fuckups. i was actually really sad at the end.
>>
>>61558046
in terms of individual characterization of each of the marines it nails them almost perfectly. the casting is great, the actors are all great, all of their interactions are believable, the shit they say is hilarious, and you can really see how a lot of them change over the series while still maintaining their personalities. still prefer the book personally since you get more details about each of them, but the miniseries does a great job capturing a good majority of them without making them seem like hollywood caricatures, which series like this usually have the tendency to do. i think it treads that fine line between realism and drama pretty perfectly, mostly because you literally couldn't make up half the crazy shit that happens in it.

another minor thing that i think really helped it is the complete lack of music (barring the final scene) outside of what the marines sing to themselves. it adds a lot to the realism of it all.

BoB is a feelgood quipfest about a band of merry gentlemen strolling across europe whereas the pacific is the complete opposite. you've got your fiery italian, the burly cigar smoking chad, the jokester, the stoic leader, etc etc. in the pacific, the character who's most like winters gets his brains blown out off screen

>>
>>61564854
Band of Brothers is about the camaraderie that blossoms during war. The Pacific is about the monsters that war makes us.
