I'm trying to learn to sharpen my knife and I don't even know what grit my stone are. I have two nondescript scythe stones. From what I've learned so far the finer one should leave closer scratches so I could at least determine in what order to use them, but can someone explain how that even makes sense? Wouldn't the fact that you make multiple passes mean the scratches would overlap and there should be no distinguishable spacing pattern?
>>61532675I have this same knife. It's been out by my fire pit for a year. Not a speck of rust. No wobble and took surprisingly long to dull. Very viable much more akin to a $30-$50 knoife.

>>61556914Scythe stones come in medium and fine.File your fingernails with the stones.wbich ever leaves a rougher edge on your nail is the medium stone.>For a knife edge, you need to grind the edge on each side until the fresh ground edges meet, this will not take very long at all, do, 10-20 consistent strokes on one side and inspect, then do the other side.>Isr the fine stone and repeat.>Another fingernail test is to lightly drag the knife edge laterally across the top of your nail, if it bites in, it is sharp

>>61560429You can get away with nothing but hand tools, if you don't mind the extra work. I use an angle grinder and bench grinder to rough out the shapes and basically do everything after that with files and sandpaper. If you're buying steel that's annealed, you'll need a decent torch, like one of those Bernzomatic ones to heat the blade and some oil to quench in. I use canola since I haven't yet dropped the cash on Parks. If you're buying pre-hardened steel, you will need some sort of belt sander, since it'll likely be too hard to feasibly use hand files.
>>61532132This is my knife. I use it daily
>>61564417>oilWater quench (brine or glycol included) is fine for most common knife steels, oil is not necessary until you want to get fiddly with your shit
>>61565730>oil is not necessary until you want to get fiddly with your shitWhat do you mean? There's no reason to use water over oil for basic steels unless you're trying to get every last bit of performance, in which case you're probably going to be using specialized quench oil anyway, or another alloy altogether.Water has a non-negligible risk of cracking or severely warping blades, and there aren't that many steels that a beginner would be using that would really require that fast a quench, and couldn't get a perfectly serviceable hardness with oil.
>>61560429I use an angle grinder for cutting the shapes from the flats and used to clean it up and shape the bevels with a 1x30 belt grinder. Then I would just use lump charcoal with a hair dryer to heat treat the knife before tossing it in oven for the temper. The results were so-so with the grinder setup I had since the belt would jump or get bogged down with grinding so much steel. I was so frustrated with my garbage bevels that I bolted together a 2x72 grinder and had a much easier time since. I was able to get tools and make it as a wagecuck at the time, so anyone can do it
>>61565816Dude is renting. Oil is messy and stinks to high heaven, I had to move my quenching setup out of the basement entirely because it made the kitchen smell like old diesel and cigar ash. Water is just fine, if you're worried about quenching too fast heat it up first and make a brine that will slow it down enough you don't have to risk anything. I quenched my first few small blades in a coffee pot, water comes out about 170-180 and the pot won't shatter.Mostly it's about the mess and the smell tho
>>61566070Fair point, I hadn't thought about the smoke/smell.Strangely enough, I kinda like the smell. Dunno why.

>>61582273it really depends on the knife. a tanky knife with a decent amount of blade stock can be used and abused, but as long as you touch it up regularly it will be totally fine as a weapon. A very slender knife on the other hand, I'd want to be relatively gentle with. The chance of you getting into a self-defense situation and using pepper spray is pretty low. Using a gun is even lower. Using a knife is even lower... it's insanely low. You might as well EDC an umbrella just in case it rains out of nowhere. It's just a LARP, a waste of space. The saving grace of the knife is that it's a useful tool. You might as well carry one that you would feel OK using as one too. Or you can be the kind of autistic turbofaggot that carries a gun, spray, flashlight, 1 tool blade and 1 KILLING BLADE because you are suburban Batman and you are READY to mog the next trans shooter
>>61581998>d2 has a tendency to rust do you have any tips on how to prevent that?just wipe it down but also be prepared for some spotting. I carried a D2 knife for a year and nothing keeps it from picking up some patina. The only way to 100% prevent oxidization is to have a coated blade or to force a patina with acid or bluing or something like it
Is there any reason to use a dagger over a regular knife in this day and age?
>>61582714Well if it’s a larp I don’t mind it’s a nice self confidence boost so I don’t find it to be a waste of space. I trained Muay Thai and bjj for like 14 years it was a lot of fun and if that was a larp that’s ok too. >>61582764I see. I’ll be diligent in keeping her clean then thanks maybe I will end up turning it into a beater if it gets too bad
>>61583051Define "use." Daggers are for killing people/animals. They're still really good at it. If you use your knife for other things, regular knives have always been a better option.
>>61583315Ok but how often are you killing people? Not often, unfortunately. That's why i ask.
>>61579915>he keeps his swords tactically available behind the pots and pans what did he mean by this
>>61581559whats the knife on bottom right with the flat tip? is it broken or intentionally flat because its a rescue knife?
>>61583236Training in Muay Thai and BJJ is bound to make you fit longterm and teach your body how to move, and you're arguably more likely to use it than any of the weapons I mentioned, so no I wouldn't call practical martial arts like that "LARP."Anyway yes "confidence boost" is a common reason that people LARP with equipment they don't actually use or need, so that all lines up.
>>61583051If I was LEO and I wanted to carry a backup fixed blade (like the SOCP) then a dagger would make sense. It would also be no problem to carry some kind of single-edged utility-focused knife at the same time. You're carrying so much shit already, you can pretty easily add another light folding knife to the mix.if you're just some shmuck walking around the suburbs or city, then no, there is no good reason to walk around with a dagger aside from just thinking they're cool
>>61583437That's my point. Daggers have always been for killing things. If you're not killing things they're not as useful as a real knife. A lot of historic don't even cut well.

How much difference does knife blade lenght mean in practice? Varusteleka has these knives in three sizes, 85, 110 and 140mm.
>>61586530It's for chopping power, to baton bigger pieces of wood, to get deeper into the meat of an animal and to extend the lifetime of the edge. If you don't really need a massive knife then i'd just pick what suits your hands because more precise work gets awkward with big knives

I can't figure out what kind of lock is on my knife. You open it with two hands and close it the same way. It's hard to call it "locking" because there is no unlocking switch or anything, you just use a little bit of force. It's also hard to call it "non locking" because something is holding it pretty much in place, by no means will it swing open and shut.
>>61606218It's called a slipjoint and is considered a non-locking knife
Are these memes? I like the design, and I'm looking for something to attach to my plate carrier.
>>61606287I figure they are only ever useful when grappling with someone and you can't shoot them or pull out your gun. The grip is very skinny so it's not comfortable but it won't slip out easily and it's skinny enough so you can operate your gun and hold the knife in the same hand. You can add a bit of grip tape if you think it helpsI don't think it's designed for a plate carrier, though, but you might be able to make it work
>>61606320That's kinda just what I'm going for. I already have a leatherman on my battle belt, so the only time I'd ever pull it would be if someone was right on top of me. I was planning on just doing a paracord wrap. I was really leaning toward the Toor Raven, until I learned their QC is ass, and at that price point, not really acceptable.
>>61606347That's what boot knives are for.
I got pic related from a local hardware store for pocket change. Nowhere in the known world is there any information on what grit it is. It doesn't seem all that flat on the edges of the coarse side. It slowly dissolves as I use it. Is that normal? If so, I have some scythe stones that don't dissolve.. what's the difference between the integral and the melty ones and which is better for what? I just need to know a little bit about this before I buy something decent and also what level of sharpness should I be able to get with this cheap stuff if I hope to ever make it in the sharpening hobby?
Hey guys, coming here from /out/This is my trusty mora classic, I'm afraid I got a rust problem. It has rust going down along the tang into the handle from water/juices seeping in.I read, too late, that you can pour wax or epoxy resin down the tang to sort of waterproof it so this doesn't happen. Is it too late? can I take it apart somehow without replacinf the handle or should I just get another one?
>>61606347Milmak CCW/CCW-L, Auxiliary manufacturing Karl, Beckwith operator but there are probably far cheaper knives with that semi-baselard grip style. The Cobratec Kingpin's been shilled a lot online lately.
>>61543825> EDC just arrived, cool shit and good holster, but its fucking hard to pull out one handed, it's stuck in there, so if I need it in a hurry it's a problem, maybe it'll soften up idk I had it for 1 hourwhat knife is that?
>>61608237nta but it's a spyderco Ronin, the fixed version of the Yojimbo. I have one but it's not on my carry rotation, the handle is kind of odd for the grips I like. There's a whole autistic fighting system developed for those knives but I can't recommend that shape for much other than absolutely murdering amazon boxes, it's decent for utlility.
>>61608295Interesting, I know next to nothing about knife fighting and took it to be a utility blade
>>61606989>can I take it apart somehow without replacinf the handleHard to tell. I don't see a pin through the ferrule, but it may be glued in place or something. You could always try, and if it doesn't work just make a nice new handle yourself.
I like it
is HRT good for you?
>>61606989>I'm afraid I got a rust problemit'll take 20 years to rust away, dont sweat it too much>>61606989>mora classicit's peened atthe bottom, you have to grind that off and the then the handle will pop off and you can clean it up. Epoxy is the easiest way to putit back on, use enough that it squishs out both endsit you son't want to bother but still want it rust proof, soak the knife+ handle in phosphoric acid (Krud Kutter etc) over night, neutralize with baking soda and spray WD-40 in there to dry it out.
