Managed to get here before the weekend.
>>61502654Alright I'll bite, how is it in terms of quality?
>>61502689Too early to tell obviously, but fit and finish smell and look like PTR. But there's no PTR markings anywhere in the receiver or barrel. I took it with me quick to the indoor range and they only had a single box of 308. But it ran 20 PPU soft points without any immediate concern. I'm taking it out with me tomorrow for a more lengthy shooting session.
>>61502753ty, keep us posted
>>61502753Oh and the color doesn't really show up on camera well. That photo makes it look like it has much more of a brown stock but it's nearly the same color in person as the handguard, a very dark green. Grip is only green around the edges but definitely shows up grey in the right light.Other than that I had to shim the handguard with a bit of aluminum foil and beer can.
>>61502654Oh damn that was fast
NN
>>61502753Waiting warmly for the good word on these things.I hope this incentivizes PTR to drop the base prices on their own 91s. I'm kicking myself for not getting one when they were still $900 or so.
>>615020686.5 Grendel
>>61502654Rear stock is brown?
>>61503943Color is all over the place. See >>61502785.
>>61495711>Wlvrn anon from earlier. Havnt had any issues with my mags falling out. I have had stove piping due to what I assume is overgassing. I feel like they didn't get their sizes right with the gas plug. I am currently using mine on the 2nd lowest setting with a Huxwrx EL-QD suppressor. And if I go higher I seem to run into stove piping, or even this weird issue where the empty casing will turn 180 on the chamber. And that was happening on the normal and one setting below that. I think it has to do with how big the opening of the ejection port is and if the bolt runs too fast, the casing cannot eject out fast enough. Next time I take it to the range I need to try it without the cover. Best 5rd ground was about 1.3 moa. Thanks a bunch for the report again anon and any future ammo experiments you do. Like with the MDR & MDRX I suspect some guns will be perfect with zero problems running for thousands of rounds. But it's definitely not good that it's still not consistent, or that they didn't nail this down ahead of such a total rebrand. With my 308 MDRX I never had any magazine drop issues with either PMags (which is what the gun came with fwiw) or metal SR25s, but the fiddly gas and ejection sounds very, very similar despite what should be a pretty different system. Which raises the question of what they were gaining here in the first place if the issue ultimately boils down to them not doing enough testing to get the ports/timing right.
>61499060>There should be no reason these weapons are lovingly handled and checked before going out, there's no way they sold even 10,000 MDRXs over the course of its runI could see them having gotten somewhat above that, mine from years ago is in the 7000s serial #, but yeah agree overall. My problem here to some extent is their weird approach to it all and expectations. This really should have been the MDR3, with hopes set accordingly. Another little evolution that improved some aspects (accuracy and weight) and without dumping FE, and taking full and well tested advantage of the new gas flexibility (no more fixed rail section). And frankly while it shouldn't even be needed but if they needed to it'd be better if it was a $2800 or $3k gun instead of a $2500 gun if it meant they paid a few hundred per gun to have each one individually gone over and a random 10% sample of the guns had 1000rnds put through them. Or whatever it took to nail things down. If someone is willing to pay gucci price they're willing to pay a bit more to have it be rock solid 100% no bullshit.Instead they did this whole big relaunch, and flat out removed a major feature, all in the name of reducing QC complexity and so on. So they sort of shot their load in terms of a chance to draw a line under a rep for issues. I'd think if nothing else they'd take a hit on the first 500 guns or something at least, make sure all the day 1 order guys were super ultra taken care of. But apparently not. The improvements seem real and encouraging, people like the gun and ergos, the lightness in 30cal, the better accuracy, but man, I dunno it just feels so weirdly done/rushed/half baked somehow.
>>61502995Ah, a fellow Stag 10 enjoyer I see. >Maybe this will become, like, a cool thing, owning a Stag 10
i put more parts on the falno bipod because it just fucks with grouping in my experience, 30-round mag support works better
>8.6 blackout barrels are starting to come to market for AR-10Kind of want.
>>61505950I kind of want one too. An 8.6 blk AR10 pistol sounds neat. Or maybe a jakl in 8.6 blk. Going shooting today, bros
>>61505950Kinda interested someday but too early for me, it's going to be a long time yet before it can achieve 300bo cheapness and ubiquitous options if it ever does. That said the recent form 4 approval speed changes have made the thing more attractive since it's both built for suppression and requires a new suppressor, unlike 300bo couldn't just reuse my existing 30cal cans. Approvals happening in a matter of days though lowers the bar significantly.
>>61506030>Going shooting today, brosLucky bastard, post pics plz, I need a view of freedom
>>61505950I now have interest in this.
>>61503859I bought a PTR-91 for <$800 but that was 10 years ago, it was pure dog shit. I want another and the CAI ones look appealing.
>>61506820What was bad about it? I thought they were fine until their QC dropped during quarantines.
>>61507328They are, there’s just a couple guys that say they were awful and when pressed, the best you get was “Idk it didn’t work it was a piece of shit” or “I sold it idk”, they’re just bad faith statements meant to poison the well.
Perfect day for shooting, but it was range clean up day. I just want to shoot steel at 300 yards. :(At least my dues get reduced for participating in the clean up day.
>>61507328Mine would jam up where the bolt would bite the mid section of the next round's casing. I put several hundred rounds through mine and it never improved. I had to send it back to PTR.>>61507342>bad faith statementsExcept people did have problems with them. In addition to the jamming issue, my rifle came with rust in the barrel. PTR had really bad QC even before COVID and many rifles never should have left the factory. I'm talking about out-of-spec mag catches too. PTRs are cool but they really are shit, the barrels aren't even nitrided at a minimum and life expectancy is 4k-6k rounds lol.
I just scooped up a PTR-91 yesterday for 900 bucks. Seems to be in good condition. Did I do good? Also, any protips?
>>61507721Learn how to check the bolt gap with a feeler gauge.
>>61506462Beautiful day to go blasting.[Run through the jungle starts playing]
>>61507768The boys i took out today. Performed flawlessly. Most of the missing from human error (I suck, currently, but i'm getting better)
>>61507719Did they replace the bolt?I just got one, I'd like to know what issues I might find.
>>61507783Here's the range. It's not ideal, which is perfect. Have to shoot around trees, through bamboo grass, and there's only a narrow view of the targets.
>>61507802Here's the backstop/target set in progress, the little orange blur in the earlier pic. I recently set it up and haven't been able to really use it. It's not perfect, it's a work in progress.
>>61507813Oops! (I love .308) Anyway, I won't post any other targets. As I said, i'm still bad at shooting but i'm taking serious strides to get better. I hope to shoot seriously at least twice a month.
>>61507802Looks like a german forest, what camo do you wear when larping?
>>61508094Eh, i don't own any camo, but generic woodland camo would do around here
>>61508107Flecktarn is to dark, something more like Multicam would work very in that forst. Also get some camo, even I own that ;_;
>>61508125Feels larpy. I feel bad for even having a modular surplus vest with a bunch of pouches and dSuch.
>>61502753Had really bad mag caused issues in today's session. I don't know how it didn't happen yesterday considering it's my only mag. Whenever there is an even amount of bullets in the mag a light tap will send the top round flying into orbit. It did cause some of the funniest stoppages where the bottom stripped round makes it into the chamber but the launched round prevents the bolt from closing because it ended up rattling around above the carrier. Inspection of the mag it kind of lop sided. Further shooting is stalled until I get a few new mags in.
>>61508150Its called board culture, when WE do it its not larping. A outdoor trip with a rifle, fire and camping just needs camo. I would even say more Anons have camo at home that we got Anons with IRL friends
>>61508257Wasn't doing any of that, was just out on the family property to shoot
Found a waffle at the show today.
>>61507719current barrels are 4150 chrome moly. also I've heard of people shooting 10k rounds through them without the barrels going. both me and my friend got one back in June and both of ours have ran great, no ftfs or anything.
If I want to keep my SCAR 17S at 16in, what's a good muzzle device over the stock FN muzzle brake thing?
>>61507328I had a ptr also. I am too lazy to go look for my photo with owl and my ptr. I was not overly fond of it for several reasons. Their issues are real, but are probably not as common as they are with Century made stuff. I hope the Century rifles are better made though, I want to give a G3 type rifle a second go.
>>61508669Why do you want to change it? Regardless, the answer is either a suppressor compatible muzzle device for your preferred suppressor or a neutral 3/4 prong flash hider.
So a friend of mine got me the 100 round helix mag for my PTR for my birthday. Now with it having a xps2, magnifier, wide handguard with bipod, carry handle. What else is there for me to do with it?Considering getting the tacticool psg stock or that boot shaped thing to make it more LMG'y.Goofy ideas are welcome.
>>61505118NP,I'll probably post in brg whenever i come across anything worthwhile about it. Was planning on going shooting again tomorrow but its supposed to be storming all day sunday. really wanted to try to see if I still get some of the weird FTE issues without the ejection cover.>>61508669You could go with a flash hider if you don't like the aggressive break on it, otherwise a suppressor QD mount if you plan on suppressing it
>>61507768>>61507783>>61507802>>61507813Thanks anon I need a day like that
>>61508792Similar weather here so probably won't be taking out my MDRX either not that anyone needs more data on that thing lol. Also not really brg but I am excited to get my SRS receiver next week at long last, though still waiting on barrel and scope probably another week or three. But my 3-4 year planned gun is coming together.
>>61507802>>61507813Beautiful. I'm working on my own range ideas for out back innawoods on my property so always inspiring to see what others do. Really hilly here so probably I won't be able to get more then 100-200yd max in any decent line but it'll be mine and right there which counts for a lot.
>>61508701The new Century guns are made and put together by PTR (allegedly).
>>61509077Yeah, I started setting this range up about a month ago. Had to go through with a machete and cut down a lot of vines and bamboo grass, and then went through with an axe and chainsaw to down some trees until I had roughly a hundred yards of clearance. It would be harder to do more than that, but it's worth it.>>61508968we all do. it was nice. Looking forward to do it again in a week or two.
>>61508787>100 round helix magBeta C-Mag?
Is changing the barrel on a Garand particularly difficult? Thinking of replacing with a Criterion
>>61508596nice. how much?
>>61508701Hey Owl!
>>61509435Yeah
>>61505381It was on my wishlist for a long time, jumped on it when I found it for $888

>>61507829>(I love .308)Hits hard, we all do, fren. We all do.
>>61508150>Feels larpyIgnore the feels and go for style points with RBS.
>>61508219>get a few new mags in.A few? Just get 20 @$8/ea while you can.
>>61508257>with IRL friendsHey, I resemble that remark.
>>61503751>No Trips, No Traps, No airsoft
>>61510140Hi fren!
26 km hike finnished with a range trip this Saturday. Backs of knees hurt but I am happy.>>61507802Nice.>>61509077>hilly hereThat just means you get a good backstop for free, right?>>61508125In those conditions, Pencott Greenzone might be just perfect.
>>61511677>>hilly here>That just means you get a good backstop for free, right? In all seriousness, "kinda", because I'd still like 100-200yd where I'm actually shooting at least reasonably flat right? A flat stretch going into a hill or cliff would indeed be absolutely ideal, bit of work with my tractor or just by hand even and done. But when I say "hilly" I mean that I'm literally not sure I have a usable stretch of flat land that long anywhere on my 100acres and I've hiked almost every square foot. So I'm thinking what I may do it an elevated platform or 3 to shoot from, like 20' up, aiming into a hill so that I get 100-200yd flat through the air. I can hang targets in trees at 25/50/75 after that, or maybe have the 10/25/50 ones be on the ground so I can use them in exercises that involve some movement.Which honestly I'm actually a little hyped about now as I've planned it, I always loved making tree houses and hides and here's an excuse to do something fun like that as an adult. But in terms of "free" I'm trading getting a perfect backstop for zero money or effort for having to setup the firing position with money and effort. Although another advantage is I won't have to worry about most ground clearing at all either I guess.
>>61509056Nice, Im also hoping to have a gun I've been planning on for about 3-4 years to be finished. Gunsmith building it has told me it was in the current batch that was being test-fires so I'm hoping to receive news within the next week or two
>>61512617Fucking awesome, that's gotta be exciting! What are you getting? One weird thing is for me at least I'm finding it a little harder then I expected for the final wait, which is dumb because I'm no stranger to waiting, I've got a number of cans I waited 8+ months for and after the first one I'd sort of forget about it until approved. And this has been a long term deal of saving up and researching. Yet now that the home stretch is in sight I find myself anticipating it more often. Brains are uncooperative sometimes.
>>61511384IMAO, still better than being born british
>>61512196Nice to see other people seriously considering setting up their own brush ranges. Just start doing it. Don't think about it too much. Just start by trying to find the most optimal spot on your property and going from there.
>>61512971I've been doing the surveying, free time comes and goes but you're definitely right should just buckle down and get started. To some extent have just been waiting for winter to be over which it now is, but also I've been hoping to buy another 25 or so acres of woods out back from a neighbor which would make things a lot more convenient and be a cool area for this. Really nice guy and a good farmer, sadly his wife just passed, and I'm sure as heck not going to press him on it right now. Maybe later this summer though.
>>61507829What distance were you shooting at? What ammo? Id be so pissed.
>>61513129Roughly a hundred yards with plinking ammo, PSA's AAC brand .308 150gr FMJ.It's not broken, it just spun so hard it flew back and wrapped itself around the support.
>>61507829>>61511339>>61513173fwiw you can sometimes get 308 frangible real cheap which still has a satisfying boom and is damn fun at shorter range on steel. Silly fun with a bunch of small targets in the woods around trees and rocks and such to run around zapping at, also a decent workout with a BR
>>61511373>A few? Just get 20 @$8/ea while you can.This. Mags are consumables, and standard ones are cheap. Don't be stingy about 'em, it's such an unnecessary waste of your time/money to have mags cause any issues ever.
>>61511373>>61514708Shipping time is a thing. Mags should be here mid week. I wasn't expecting Atlantic to actually ship the rifle that fast l normally they take 2-3 days.

>>61502068I recently bought an FAL, where can I get 30 round magazines for them, preferably the ones with the slight curve design?
>>61518333Metric?
>>61517395don't sleep too tight, minorities could break into your house and rob you
>>61518349I think so. It is an SA58 DSA FAL, I have an Israeli mag in it rn which is having no issues with.
>finally got eternal EEEEEEEEEEEEEE in other earwow this sucks!
>>61512196>elevated platformThat actually sounds pretty awesome! Or perhaps you could shoot from one hillside to another, a bit like those Swiss ranges where you shoot 300 meters across a valley.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5capbhKlVASince you are not going to shoot over a main road, all the "shooting prone only" limitations won't apply.BTW having a flat range is essential, but with the hilly terrain you get an extra opportunity to practice shooting uphill and downhill which is quite rare.Anyway, I envy you burgers that you can set up a range on your property without asking.
>>61519024No reason to not get a suppressor right now anon, they're approved in a month usually. Save your hearing!
>>61518333The curved ones are british mags for L4 7,62 NATO Bren gun, interchangeable with the L1A1 rifle 20 rounders, i.e. inch pattern.Your rifle is metric and would take the straight metric 30 rounders intended for the FALO heavy barrel FAL (Israel, Argentine and couple others were using those). Beware that there are also inch pattern straight 30 rounders (Canadian, Australian, NZ).Inch pattern curved mags can be altered to fit into metric receivers, IMO it's a waste since they're getting scarce anyway, but you do you. It's not a completely trivial task though.
>>61519024Sorry anon, that really sucks. Are you sure it's eternal yet though? Sometimes it does fade down or go away after a few weeks/months with care, though you should be absolutely ultra fucking careful about noise going forward. As other anon says if you don't already have cans you should. You'll have to experiment, apparently for some folks a bit of light white/pink/brown noise can help a bit. We had an EEEEEEEEE thread last year that made me look again, apparently for the first time there are some promising research results on medical treatments coming along though still a ways from phase 3 clinical trials, but maybe we'll see some real help this decade.Obligatory fuck cans being on the NFA.
>>61519276>That actually sounds pretty awesome! Or perhaps you could shoot from one hillside to another, a bit like those Swiss ranges where you shoot 300 meters across a valley. That's a cool idea, and indeed I have something just like that which is almost 300m on the dot at a good point and could adjust for 300yd probably. However I only own one of the hills so it'd have to be a cooperative thing and both I and neighbors have made some trails down below for us and friends to walk/ski/snowshoe on (though I think I'm the only one who really walks back there much outside of winter, it's one place I take my cats), so that's a consideration. Think I'll just start with trying to figure out a good solid shorter range thing, then invite others who like to shoot and we'll see what happens from there.>BTW having a flat range is essential, but with the hilly terrain you get an extra opportunity to practice shooting uphill and downhill which is quite rare.Yeah having some up/downhill isn't bad at all per se, just not as the only thing.>Anyway, I envy you burgers that you can set up a range on your property without asking. It will vary a ton by state and region. Some are much more property owner friendly then others, though not always in the way you might expect. Setting up a shooting range or just wandering around shooting anywhere that isn't explicitly posted? Have fun! Building a little shed for my mower and stacking wood? Adding an extra room to my house (which is not on any town water/sewer)? NEED A PERMIT FOR THAT SON.
>>61519303>Inch pattern curved mags can be altered to fit into metric receiversSomebody made a whole industry of doing this in Europe in the 90's, since there are fucktons of such professionally converted examples around. I own one myself and it's the only metric-lug mag that has fed reliably in my inch pattern gun (maybe because of the inch mag body measurements?)
>>61519024Sorry Anon, how did that happen?
>>61508787>a friendsomedayHave you run that mag yet? curious to see the dependability
>>61519024Had it since I was 3. Sucks
>rare absolutely beautiful set of april days>have to spend most of it flying or in meetings for work (though at least got to fly business class)>finally back and have some time off>weather turns to typical cold drizzle rainy crapfugg. not that it will prevent me from doing some shooting anyway this week but as I get older spending rare gorgeous days inside feels worse and worse
Speaking of the CA-3, got an old CETME Sporter from them. Think it's worth it to trade the latter for the former, or should I just save money? Also I have no clue if mine's got the messed up receiver or not

It handles zero pretty well so I doubt it's a toy but I'm not really a fan of it, I think I'll put back the 4x original chinese scope.

Still can't decide on optic for my SCAR 17S. Fried my oldest EXPS3-0 lil over 2 weeks ago but it was already on its last legs (replacement came in today). The range I go to has a rental 17S with Aimpoint PRO + 3x magnifier and I found it quite fine for what I would be doing (ranges less than 300 yards but heavily forested). The extra weight didn't phase meStill got my old Vortex Viper PST Gen ii kicking around, but the eye box I find a bit too tight for my liking. Also light transmission in low light is a bit eh
>>61535830>Vortex Viper PST Gen ii >the eye box I find a bit too tight >light transmission in low light is a bit ehMakes it sound like a crappy scope for a high end rifle. >>61535830I recently got the trijicon Credo 1-8 for my PTR, and have been very impressed, its heavy as hell but seems to be built well with better eye relief than anything similar I fingerfucked while shopping around. Buddy and I took it out to 800 the other night on torso sized steel, had a blast
>>61543206How is that compared to the vcog?
>>61543206>than anything similar I fingerfucked while shopping aroundUltimately if you're paying $1k+ for glass I think this is the key thing. It's really worth trying to actually physically look through a bunch of stuff, preferably mounted, if at all possible. Range or LGS. Admittedly for some people it's not possible and then you just kinda have to do your best wading through stuff, afaict nobody anywhere does any sort of even half way objective big grid though there are various random reviews of stuff that are quite thorough. But 20 minutes with a dozen scopes to look through will teach you more then 20 hours of researching online.
>>61543242That is one that I didn't get a chance to mess with, but from my understanding it's essentially the same, but the vcog has been Marine-proofed.>>61543253In the 3 weeks before I pulled the trigger, I had just about every mid to high end lvpo in my hand, one dude was even nice enough to scoop up about 18k worth of glass and take me out back to check them out outdoors at range. Best bang for my buck was either the trij or the leupold 2-10, but I went with the credo because I liked the reticle more and it was slightly shorter to clear the charging handleCaptcha 18wHK
>>61543801>Marine-proofedI need that in my life. Also the fact it comes with an integrated mount is nifty too
>>61543801>In the 3 weeks before I pulled the trigger, I had just about every mid to high end lvpo in my hand, one dude was even nice enough to scoop up about 18k worth of glass and take me out back to check them out outdoors at range. There are ones there that are actually kinda ok for $300, but the point is you can see if you even like the basic approach. Higher end stuff has better glass, more light transmission, closer to true 1x, less chromatic aberration, FFP options, higher mag multipliers, stuff like that. But it doesn't fundamentally change the basics, they don't have 10x the eyebox or something, they're not 1/3 the weight. If you hate running low end LPVOs vs a holo or RDS or fixed mag or whatever, personally I don't think you're likely to enjoy high end ones either.

>>61544084>VERY COOL EPIC EVENMore like very, very fucking weird. Like:- DT has absolutely zero reason to lie about something so strange, objective, and specific as that.- He has absolutely zero reason to have done such a thing, like, multiple levels of less than zero reason. I mean even if you wanted to cast shade on them, it's such an obvious stupid thing, and you wouldn't then send it back.I guess I lean towards this being DT's fault, but due to lack of QC. It seems most likely this is a fuckup in their outsourcing yet again, their own suppliers or their subcontractors somewhere in the stack cheaped out on a critical spring or stuck in something substandard. So the real problem for DT is in how they respond. They should have been like >"problem is cut spring, wow that's crazy we're so sorry about that. We will find out who did that, check all the other guns we already have, and put out a notice to everyone to check theirs. Of course we'll take care of any of you who have a problem at our expense."Like shit happens. Granted a LOT of shit has happened with the MDR, but even so "sub-spec spring" is pretty small on the scale of component issues, clearly doesn't affect all rifles, and they shouldn't be defensive just deal with it promptly.

That might explain some of the very different results some of us have seen, comes down to whether we're suppressing or not.But he doesn't talk about QC and that seems like it'll remain an issue. Along with all the talk and glassdoor stuff and such of constant serious employee churn, which is brutal in terms of doing consistent quality. It's all well and good if they recognize some of their problems, work on improving them, and come up with good designs. But if they can't actually MAKE those designs, consistently, it doesn't matter much how good they might be theoretically, then still can't be recommended except to people who are willing to gamble and go through potentially multiple warranty cycles until all issues are worked out.

Nick addressed that it has removable feed ramps to accommodate for different calibers in the future; including 8.6, so I don't want to write it off yet. I at least hope they learned something from making the mdrxI'm not writing it off either, but it's definitely too soon to be sticking it on the brg image, and the fundamentals are a challenge. My prediction just based on how the company personnel situation seems to be is that it'll get refinement in design, but ultimately it'll remain a cool hit-or-miss gun just like the MDRX, albeit with improvements since it's the MDR3 however they chose to brand it. Like, in 6-12 months with some more kit variety it'll be a gun worth buying if you're willing to have it be a project gun that might take another few months of back and forths to have work.My experience with the MDR was that they did honor warranty, and that if you tried enough times you'd get a working gun (and some people got golden guns right off), and that once you had a working gun it stayed working. The design wasn't terrible just the QC. And the gun itself is enjoyable. But it doesn't seem like they've addressed the fundamental issues in that regard beyond giving up on some neat stuff to make the gun simpler (since simpler is always easier to QC, parts removed entirely can never be problem points). Which isn't nothing, but not really what I hoped for either. And I'm bummed they don't seem to have the internal bandwidth to do things like a 300bo or 8.6 or whatever micron day 1 for what should be just a revision. I stand by it being kinda a rushed so-so launch.
