It is quite cheap, but the only way you're getting in is if you can get a visa somehow. The people you see "living in Japan" are in by being sponsored by influencer companies. Average schmuck has to learn Japanese, teach english, or be a code monkey.
I moved to the PI for similar reasons, been to rural Japan but it got boring quick. At least here everyone is poor and worships me for some reason.
