the location of seoul has been capital historically. Chosun dynasty had seoul as capital (named hanseong).

Our dictator president Park Chung Hee had a plan to reestablish a new capital in the middle part of korea but got assassinated before trying to do so. Later in early 2000s President Roh started a project to make a new capital city with government facilities in the middle named it Sejong. Young people working for government lives there. It's still not fully developed.

so, Korea has been an independient and well established country for many centuries, nice.
I thought it was occupied by Chinese forces most of its history, and later japan.
the will for reunification makes a lot more sense now.
