Why are historians so quick to assume the accusations had no merit? All this time spent looking for explanations for the “hysteria,” why not consider there was some truth to it?

Because of their pagan worldview. See >>16597691

Pagans didn't believe in magic?

If you look at the accounts from the nearby towns the contemporary view outside of Salem was that it was a mass hysteria. And the population of those settlements were terrified that it would spread.

Well even if we assume that it would be possible to actually practice witchcraft, the methodology used to 'prove' someone is a witch is equally absurd.

How about the fact that many people involved, including jurors and clergy issued public apologies and denounced the affair? .

>why not consider there was some truth to it?
the truth is that the Puritan town of Salem just wanted to get rid of these fringe weird people and ran with any excuse to justify it

It's actually infuriating that nearly every modern interpretation sides with the witches. They were 100% asking for it with the fucked up shit most of them did. Sure, there were some which were falsely accused, but they were in the minority. The same things happen today with our current justice system; does that mean we should stop punishing criminals altogether? Of course not!
