Who even were the sides

The Fenians for being Irish
The British for not stomping out Irish nationalism and letting them become independent in the first place.
The Americans for funding the terrorist IRA.

they wanted to starve to death, so let them die

>Our revenge will be the laughter of our children
Is the greatest slogan for a revolutionary nationalist movement anybody has ever thought of.

No one in Ireland is laughing.

Maggie Thatcher. She let them become cause celebres and martyrs, effectively giving them the political prisoner status in the eyes of the public that she was denying them in prison. She ended up folding on the issue because she realised how counterproductive it was.

The British Government/Irish Republican hunger strikers.

Irish Republican prisoners in 1976 held a protest, demanding the following:
>right to not wear prison uniform
>right to not do prison work
>right of free association with prisoners and to be able to study/etc
>right to weekly visits/corrspondance
>restoration of remission lost due to the protest
These demands are aimed at gaining the status of political prisoner, a big PR victory.

In 1980, prisoners went on hunger strike to protest for the demands. This ends with a proposed settlement from the British government. The settlement evidently fell extremely short of the demands. A new strike begins in 1981, both with the prior demands but also in protest of abuse by prison staff.
>Bobby Sands, IRA man, is one of the leaders among the strikers
>He is elected as an MP of Fermanagh and South Tyrone
>Massive PR victory for the IRA
>He, along with 10 others, die in Hunger Strike
>International condemnation against Britain, widespread riots
>Massive swell of support for the IRA
>All but one of the prisoners demands is granted (the only refused one is regarding prison work)

The prisoners were in the right, and they were victorious in the sense that they achieved almost all of their goals and then some.

the ones proclaiming this lost.
