Are air fryers just bulky, low capacity ovens? Am I just being scammed by buying one? Is there actually a difference in what I can make in an air fryer and an oven? Why would I get an air fryer instead of an oven?
>>
>>100200655
They're glorified convection ovens.
>>
>>100200655
its for poorfags who cant afford real fan ovens
>>
>>100200713
AKSHUALLY, they're closer in cooking style and time to an impingement oven
>>

>Why would I get an air fryer instead of an oven?
speed, they'll cook things twice as fast as an oven. they are for the fat fuck who cant wait when its been known for centuries that cooking things slower makes them taste better
>>
>>100200713
>>100200751
What does a “convection oven” or a “fan oven” even do that a normal oven doesn’t? To me it sounds like the food would be cooked and would taste the same. Who gives a fuck if air is blown on it?
>>
>>100200794
with a fan oven it blows the heat around inside so food gets cooked evenly on all sides and it can also run at a lower temperature, saving money on energy bills.
>>
>>100200655
Tried it with freedom fries and it was shit.
>>
ill stick to a real fryer oil/fat is what tastes good
>>
>>100200655
It's a double edged sword. It's healthier because you don't use oil with them but it's bad for you because most air fryers are made with chinesium.
>>
>>100200814
Ovens also cook food from all sides, are you fucking dumb? The whole thing sounds like a scam to trick retard housewives to buy shit they don’t need.
>“But honey, this uses air technology to cool the food evenly from all sides, we really should buy it!”

Can anyone on the face of the earth say: “I prefer the food cooked in an air fryer from that cooked in a normal oven”?

Pressure cookers are better than your overpriced japscrap until you get to the $300+ range on japscrap
>>
>>100200655
They are the most convenient way to make chicken tendies.
Potatoes come out somewhere between baked and fried, and you really use a minimal amount of oil.
It's great for reheating food that would otherwise get soggy if you microwave it.
It's a lot quicker than my old school oven.
Overall I'm happy with mine.
>>
>>100200857
Really? So you've never, ever had the issue of your chicken being all nice and crispy on top but still raw on the bottom?
>>
>>100200925
you think zoomers even know how to fucking cook? lmao.
>>
>>100200857
best I could get out of a quick search is that cooking times are often lower with a convection oven and at lower temperatures. reminds me of my pressure cooker which is absolutely the best at "slow" cooking meat in well under an hour. so yeah great for housewives
>>
>>100200925
No you fucking retard. I have an oven like the one in shown in >>100200867. I just set it to 230C for 50 minutes without pre warming it and it cooks my chicken thoroughly.

Generally, 'air fryer' is term used to describe a countertop convection oven.

Seems like some fags in this thread are defining air fryer as those pod-tray things, and don't realize air fryers can also just be square counter top mini ovens.

Not exactly the same. Convection ovens only use the fans to circulate the air (usually low to med speed) once in a while to maintain temps through the oven since normal ovens are hotter up top. Air fryers have the fans running full blast the entire time to ensure the exterior surface of the ingredient can crisp up. Usually cook times and temps needed are adjusted somewhat similar to below
>Normal oven: 400F, 60 min
>Convection oven: 350-375F, 45-50 min
>Air fry: 325-350F, 30-40 min
Those early style air fry basket things are just stupid though. Much better to get a unit that's similar in design to a countertop toaster oven. And if you really have money, go an additional step up with some like the Anova which can also do sous vide and steam (for bread mostly)
>>
>>100200965
>convection ovens are a scam because my convection oven works perfectly
anon you are retarded
a fan-forced oven just uses a fan to circulate the air faster meaning you use less power for the same cook time. a convection oven uses the thermondynamic properties of hot air to circulate the heat, but this means it needs to run the heating element for longer pulses. wood fired and gas ovens are usually always convection, while most modern electric ovens can do either.
an air fryer is just a convection oven, exactly like your picture, but because it's smaller it heats up quicker and can heat more evenly and more efficiently.

when you hit market saturation, name your product differently and sell it again. it works 100% of the time, just look at intel CPUs from 2016-2021. or fucking cars. what has actually changed in a toyota land cruiser or anything else in the last two decades except for the body shape and the stero/infotainment console? maybe a slightly more efficient engine? just change the shape a bit and sell it again. air fryer is just the same as what you have but in a different shape. and people buy it.

It's because pods are still better for formerly deep-fried recipes and precooked frozen shit, and the majority of people still can't fucking cook even though food prices have gone through the roof.
Personally im waiting for a competent dual countertop air fyer/oven as my next upgrade since I've moved the majority of my cooking to my existing countertop oven.
Standard oven ranges are honestly a huge fucking waste unless you got a permanent stay at home wife regularly cooking for a family of 5+, but obviously those things went out of fashion due to feminism.

The US had double ovens for ages now, but if you're cooking for <3, then even those are still too big and will heat up the whole house. Basically the combo range + ovens should be a triple oven, otherwise I'll take a dual countertop air frying oven instead.

Yes, its a lot better than the Tefal I had. I have a Speedi and it is great for me alone. The only things I dislike are small things about the tray. If your meat is to big you need to put the leg vertical on top of the carbs and veggies. And the handle on tray is too small. If you have kids you can probably not make enough fries in one go. Maybe with steam airfrying it works.
>>
>>100201919
The most complicated things I make are cookies and pizza. For anything else """real""" food, I'm taking the advice of pressure cooker anon. I think 6 appliances is all I'll ever need. Microwave, induction range, air fryer, pressure cooker, mini fridge, and immersion blender.
Air fryer supplants the toaster. I'm only using the range for eggs and pasta

Cuisinart TOA-60 is one of the best, because it does just about everything well.

Air Frying is not "just a convection oven. It has more to do with the proximity of the food to the heating elements, and the particular heating elements used.

>Baking
Even heating from top AND bottom elements; with or without fan. Fan is great when baking pizzas and you want a nice even finish on the toppings. No fan better when baking bread or cakes.

>Broil
Broiling is like upside-down grilling. You set the thermostat to max. It yields awesome results with meats in terms of them being tender without being overcooked because it heats indirectly. Only outer two top elements activate and can be used with or without fan.

>Air Fry
Uses all top heating elements and fan to heat food evenly across the pan. Usually set to 400 deg F to sear food. Consistent awesome results with fries, nuggets, reheating pizza, hot dogs, etc.

I do not use a microwave. Microwaves literally alter the chemical structure of the foods it cooks by messing bonds at a molecular level.

The difference between an air fryer and a convection oven is that an air fryer has a nonstick basin that you just dump your slop into and press a button. That makes it so much more convenient than an oven where you actually have to prep your food in a dish. Using a basin instead of a rack is as big a difference as adding little wheels to your luggage.

My air fryer has been one of my best buying decisions of recent times. They promised so many things, like, there was some hidden flavor in my food, and by using the flavor it would squeeze it out of it, causing everything to taste more intensely.
It was true.
It reminded me of monosodium glutamate, which has a similar effect, except air fryer flavors are unique in that there's no way to get them in any other way.
Like roasting gives a specific flavor.
Or boiling gives a specific flavor.
Air frying gives a specific flavor.
Heck, it does not replace cooking in a pan, but after cooking in a pan I just get the already made food that is still hot into the air fryer so it gets that flavor, and it's still the best way to melt cheese.
Now, afterwards I bought two more of different brands because the one I had was too small. And to my surprise those ones tasted awful. Like, imagine that's a line between well cooked food, and burnt food, these ones would make it taste 20% burnt. Put it less time in there? Still would taste 10% burnt...
So now I have two unused fryers that are useless, so brand and size may be important, try a small one, and cook the food before putting it inside, and food ill taste much better (home made KFC tastes better than actual KFC, etc.)

People forget to mention the taste, air frying makes chicken taste like KFC or better, try to get that flavor with an oven or something else.
But everything else is like that.
Pictured here are my favorite sausages ever, these bacon flavored ones are perfect for hot dogs, and you are supposed to roast them, but the best flavor you're gonna get is by air frying them, no oven or pan or even smoking them or doing them burger meat style will get you this flavor. Crispy outside, tender inside.
Only air frying.
>>
>>100203630
Nope, you put it on the water sink and it's as good to go immediately.
One thing I do is saving the used oil of one food for the next, specially because they sell around here some delicious turkey with flavors like mesquite or al pastor and the way is to save its oil and then use that oil for pork or beef.
And for a moment you stop eating because you realize you're in the nirvana of flavor and can't believe how good it tastes.

Have to add a bit of oil to every piece of "dry" food tho.

>I bet 1 ETH that if we cooked the exact same shit in a 70 dollar oven you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference
These are completely different flavors. Also, you picked the wrong guy, they sell 16 different brands of soda apple flavors in my area, I could easily tell them apart, so cooking on oven or air fryer would be as easy as telling the difference between something toasted and something roasted...
>“cook the food before putting it inside” fucking kek I want my air fryer to COOK THE FOOD you fucking moron
Why? We're talking about the final product here, if frying it on a pan before putting it on the air fryer gives you the best outcome, why wouldn't you do it?
You have the stove, the pan, and the air fryer, just use them all instead of trying to replace one appliance with another.
>>
>>100203901
Yeah, deep frying is a scam.
You can just get a tall pan and put a bunch of oil in it and "deep fry" in it, and if done well it can beat a deep fryer, specially in the juicy department, and leaving you with "meat crumbs" which are delicious, those just toast in an air fryer.
I'm not saying use an air fryer instead of that, I'm saying there's some thing that taste the best air fried.
>>
>>100203964
>Where do you find the time for this
It takes hours to boil the chicken, but you can let it do its stuff while you do other things, so just start cooking hours before meal time.
>>
>>100200857
do you know what wind chill is? it's the same as that but in reverse.

I actually prefer my chicken tendies in my air fryer because the meat seems to stay juicier than when it's made in my toaster oven (which has a convection setting, there's no comparison to the air fryer really). That being said, it's not as versatile as a regular oven or toaster oven, if I could only own one, I would choose more traditional style ovens.

Air fryers are marketed as a healthy alternative to deep frying food. Retards like >>100203901 and >>100204042 shave 10yrs off their life by eating a bunch of grease.

Having said that, the reality is I think most of people buying them are apartment dwellers whose apartments don't have an oven installed

They're a blend between an oven (cooking quality) and a microwave (speed). It makes the best "fried" food, even a sliced up potato with some seasoning is amazing in an air fryer.

If there was any chance of it being harmful, the European Union would have regulated it to the ground. If you’re in the US that’s a different story.
>>
I bought one for my mother and she absolutely loves it, to the point she bought a mini version for the family caravan. Was frankly impressed by the speed at which it cooks stuff, but what really sold me on them was getting a freshly baked croissant from frozen in less than 10 mins.
I suspect chunky potatoes and some veg may need to be par boiled prior to putting it in the air fryer. I would keep a conventional oven if you have it, for larger items and family roasts.
>>100204762
Looked this up and I am very tempted to buy it, just wondering how it handles frozen veg. The only issue is the non-stick basket. I'm aware you have to treat the basket gingerly, but is it easy to get spares if the non-stick coating chips?

Regulations vary and all corporations have to do is add instructions telling the consumer to use the product a certain way, for example saying to only use it up to certain temps. Like the other anon is telling you, BPA is not the only thing that leeches from those plastics and bisphenols (BP) come in various flavours.
Here is a study from China testing plastic food containers from different countries
>Beyond BPA – Many bisphenols migrate from food packaging
https://www.foodpackagingforum.org/news/beyond-bpa-many-bisphenols-migrate-from-food-packaging

>It only happens in the US, not to us yuropoors, nuh uh!
Well let's see
>Several European studies found that many plasticizers migrated from plastic containers and wraps into foods as they were heated in microwave ovens.
>The amount of chemical absorbed by the food depended on the temperature of the container and food, the duration of the heating, the type of plastic used and its initial plasticizer content, as well as the type of food being heated.
Read this line:
>As a general rule, the fattier the food, the more of the chemicals potentially can be absorbed and retained by it. More research should be done in this area.
That means you can be at more risk just because of the type of food you're preparing
>If you want to minimize exposure to chemicals from plastics as much as possible during any type of cooking, use inert containers, such as heat-resistant glass, ceramics and stainless steel.

>>
>>100205963
I've used mine quite abusively and it hasn't chipped yet, you can use a scour pad and put it in the dishwasher and it still looks fine. It grills just like a grill for the most part for veggies, kabobs, streak, chicken, etc cook just fine on it. So yeah you can just throw frozen veggies in with some lemon pepper and salt and it'll come out pretty good. Also nuggets, corn dogs, burritos, etc all come out excellent, almost worth it just for how it cooks a corn dog and nugget but ultimately what it's best at is grilling meat.
>>
>>100205720
Yeah anon, your brave country going to ban all plastics? The fact is most modern food is prepared using plastic they will not ban plastic even though they should and the cost (some cancer, estrogen properties like early puberty in girls) has already been deemed worth it.

depends on what i'm making. frying stuff usually within that 10-20min timespan as it is. anything over 20+ mins usually involves me baking something like cakes. I think you faggots just have no idea how to cook or you live in shoeboxes in Manhattan.

I live in an asian condoplex, no large ovens here, my air fryer has completely replaced the counter top oven.
Scallops, steaks, fried wontons, fried dumplings, french fries, hash browns, tater tots, chicken nuggets, scallion pancakes, toasting bread, hamburger and hotdog buns, mini pizzas etc.
Set and forget, like using a microwave, no preheating needed, only need to occasionally shake midway when I'm in a hurry and overload it.

It's not for everyone, but it works for me.
>>
>>100203528
that happens in any fan oven as well, hotter air always rises and anything near the top of a fan oven cooks more than anything near the bottom

It's basically an oven but smaller. Most modern ovens circulate air even if it's not blowing it. The main benefit is speed and the fact that it takes 2 seconds to clean. The main drawback is size (eat less fatty) and that it's only really good for frozen foods, which are mostly shitty for you. I'm going to make some fish fillets later today
>>
i have one and barely ever use it, everything i try to make on it turns very meh.

Here in Italy, where food is sacred and fried food is taken in high regard ,especially in Southern regions, air fryers became quite a fad... Who pushed this fad in our country? I don't know. But they're fucking useless. They are essentially a miniaturized convection oven in which you put ingredients covered with oil. The only positive side is that is small and quite efficient, and probably reaches cooking temperatures quite fast.
But everyone has a convection oven , and microwave combo ovens in Italy... So it's more than a novelty item.
After many tries in frying, the oldest method is also the best:just use a simple small cooking pot , fill it with 1 liter of olive oil at 180 Celsius ,checking the temp.with a thermometer and dip your shrimps or fries or whatever... Perfect results

This but there's nothing really glorified about them, it's literally a smaller, cheaper convection oven. If I'm just cooking some curly fries, guess which is more efficient. The air fryer or the convection oven with 4 racks.

don't most retail household builtin ovens come as convection now?

There's probably an argument for power use but that can be argued against with space.

>>
>>100203569
There's a difference between an electric oven and a wood or other material combustion oven. Namely, in the latter, the extra oxygen actually accelerates the reaction making more heat rather than circulating existing heat.
>>
>>100211359
ovens aren't a vacuum sealed chamber though
>>
>>100212138
No? What does that have to do with anything I said? I'm pointing out there's a difference between what happens when you direct a fan at a bunch of burning wood or charcoal and what happens when you direct it at an electric oven such as an air fryer. There's some pretty fundamental differences between a mud and brick furnace for melting metals and a convection oven.
