Every programmer should be forced by law to develop their software on a 2 GB memory laptop.
This would save the industry over night and 8 GB would then almost be too much for most users.

16 GB is barely still fine these days unless all you do is web browsing. any kind of work is gonna eat into 16 GB pretty quick. development, graphics design, video editing, video games. you'll want 32 at least these days, and it's pretty cheap these days too

I do photo editing and video editing at the same time on my 8 GB loonix without a problem. The only time I notice the laptop heat up a little is when watching big high quality video files. But could also be a mpv problem, idk. For some videos it needs a while to open even when the audio already started playing lol.

to people salivating at this picture, having this much ram is useless even for llm because you will get hyper bottlenecked by cpu/gpu before even consuming half that ram
chink ram is cheap as fuck, you can reach those numbers for pennis by buying them from ali
but you cannot cheap out on cpu and gpu, so at the end of the day you're still spending over $2000 with these two parts alone

I got some pretty big data (matrices representing simulation data). It's real nice to be able to keep it all in memory while doing processing like gaussian elimination and so on, and having to constantly read and write disk when doing that is a real drag.
For bigger data, got a server with 4TB allocated to one VM. Not so many motherboards cope with more memory than that.

This RAM alone cost me 800$, it's registered ECC. I care about my data.
For ECC you also will need a more expensive CPU & mobo (unless you want to go with uncertified gamer junk), so I ended up with a w7-2495X (2500$) and the asus W790-ACE mobo (800$). Also, most consumer CPUs max out at 192GB or below (and have issues running that stable anyway). That said, most people don't need this obviously

2-3 week old session. firefox memory leakage starts to get bad after about a week
if i were to close the vast majority or all of the tabs i predict it would still hog multiple GB more than can be explained. reopening the tabs in a fresh session also consumes much less. chromium is much better in this regard
i will post an update when i nuke most and then all of the tabs later, as an update to librewolf is due anyway

DDR3 are as low as $5-7 a pop used on fleaBay. Do you really need new?
I don't know about that "Teamgroup" brand, and I wouldn't ask /g/ for recs when they are willing to buy chinkshit and not mind getting chinked and having to pay more over time than buying from a reputable brand of parts.
A-Tech brand RAM is inexpensive and with good rep, for instance.

Older machines are constantly being bought and resold, DDR3 is useful for anyone picking up an older machine that cannot benefit from DDR4 and DDR5 RAM sticks.
What really overpriced these days is second-hand DDR2 memory.

Either way to care about RAM brand is low IQ. Doesn't matter if it's A-Tech, g.skill or whoever, it's coming from the same 3 fabs
