In my country, lot of companies have this practice of gaslighting people they're about to get rid off not by firing or layoffing, but pretending that the worker need to hand their own resignation letter. This way, the company doesn't have to pay anything to the worker on their way out, including his latest salary.

Bros I need some guidance.

Currently making 95k in burger land as an Infa engineer. 1.5 yoe.

I don’t have a college degree which I feel will hurt me as I advance/switch roles in my career. Should I bite the bullet and get a relevant technical degree through wgu or upskill with certs etc?

I’m assuming there are some wise anons in these threads but maybe I’m wrong.

This is why i wont work for companies that deal with clients. You cant replace a client as easily as a customer. It's high stakes. The company as a whole has low bargaining power and that trickles down to create a wageslave culture in the company.

Recurring meetings don't need to be accepted individually. The whole point is that they have been decided before being made recurring.

I have like 16 years of experience... I just somehow managed to avoid doing webdev the entire time. I mostly did backend and devops work and a little bit of UI for desktop apps, but very little html/css.
But since it's just me on my side project... well... I had to do it. ChatGPT helped, a little.

I'm fucking desperate bros, what do.
>Almost 8 months unemployed
>5yoe in C# mostly webshit
>18 interviews
>1000+ applications submitted

I thought maybe I'm just retarded but a recruiter sent me an IKM assessment and I actually scored 90 or "very strong" which surprised me. Still absolutely nothing. Every promising opportunity ends in a rejection for not the right experience; job listing gets put on hold; got outsourced to jeetland, or just plain ghosted.

I can't keep going like this I will absolutely learn a different stack or straight up go into helpdesk or sales or some other field entirely, but I don't really have experience besides in dev and an Electrical Engineering degree. Seriously tell me what to do. I just need some job better than Dunkin Donuts.

>>
>>100194711
yeah but who cares if you are making 2-3x as much money?
>>
>>100194694
Buddy, even if your employer abuses you and you only spend 50% of your time working in America you still net more money here than in Germany. Also, workers rights are relatively ok in the tech sector, except for the importation of foreigners slightly depressing our wages. I'm 4 YOE making 200k right now and I have fully paid for insurance and 23 extra vacation days, which means including sick time and national holidays I can basically take 2 months a year off.
>>
>>100194728
I am aware FAGMAN type companies give unlimited or high amounts, but I think for most companies <10 is the norm. Sick days are discouraged, people will hate you if you take them etc.

i tried dealing with an extremely lazy fuck who got hired, but i ran into a lot of issues with him working nights instead of days. he would show up, log into his computer, and proceed to watch anime or youtube videos for 8-10 year olds. any time i gave him shit to do, he would tell me that he "left it for day shift" if i asked why it didnt get done. i would usually give him shit to do that he would not do or would fuck up for the stupidest reasons, then higher ups would always come to me about it. even the higher ups would come to me when he didnt do shit i gave him to do.
>"anon, you need to get this done immediately."
>"i gave it to lazy fuck to do yesterday, but it hasnt even been touched since i last looked at it."
>"it is your work to do now because i dont care who gets it done"
your boss is going to have to intervene, otherwise the lazy fuck is just going to keep getting away with it. lazy fucks will find the most retarded and far reaching excuses for not getting shit done, and will not care even if you have to pick up their work load. everyone expected me to tard wrangle or take care of the resident lazy fuck at my job when i wasnt over him. i even asked them to let me be over him, and i was told "they probably couldnt make it happen since the position was no precedent for such a position"

my honest advice? find another job, and let them squirm when they realize how useless the lazy fuck is.

how do I into helpdesk? I can code. Idk wtf to do to get a tech job lol
>>
Dear /twg/, I am probably going to start a new job soon. The HR interview is coming up where my salary expectations will be the most interesting part of it.
The position is kinda like an intern, you get paid by hour, so this is the number we will negotiate.

I interviewed with this company a few months back, where I asked for 23€ and they ended up giving me 19€/hr, which is an okay salary for the position. (I think 23 was a reasonable request)

If they offered me this much today, I would not accept it.
I am unsure what strategy I should employ when the question comes up.

Should I ask for smth unreasonably high and hope they meet me in the middle?
Any long term ramifications of taking such a "compromise"?

What position are you interviewing for. Overall the resume looks pretty good, but its missing two things. Firstly, its missing actual numerical impact, For some of your things you mention making processes more efficient, try to quantize that to something like "10% more efficient saving 150k per year" or whatever. Helps to prove scale of impact and justify Sr title. Secondly, as a senior, I don't see any mention of you leading leading a team, or working with others, which is huge. Even if you delivered something with 2-3 other people working under you, those data points are really important.

The formatting is fine, if its worth anything most of the resumes that get to my inbox are visually similar.

infra is already a complex space where you can spend time learning stuff as it will keep evolving. instead of getting technical degree try writing a blog to track your learning, attend conferences to make connections as all tech jobs are acquired through referrals. Nothing can be guaranteed but your work experience matters a lot and you have a rather clear learning path once you are working in the field.

Should cover letters be more formal, or casual?

Dipshit, I'm literally telling you one of the metrics that we use to weed out candidates. Just because you've never had more impact than rebooting the office modem doesn't mean that's not something we look for in senior candidates.

I'm a literally hiring manager at FAGMAN (for SWE roles, not SDE), but ok.
Everyone knows that these "impact metrics" are completely made up and only make candidates seem disingenuous. For the highest responsibility (and paying) positions we almost never hire people that feel the need to put this on their resume. The rest needs to be convincing enough so that you don't need to rely on fake metrics to make yourself look good.
>>
>>100205697
What would you suggest?
>>
>>100205697
I'll admit I might be biased by the specific things I work on, but one of the most common things I see managers asking for is experience at scale, so if we are between a candidate who has only worked on some internal tool that serves 1000 users vs some product with millions the one with the higher vanity metrics is going to get the offer every time all other things equal. I'm not saying its impossible to get a job without these, but if you have metrics that prove an impressive scope of impact, that will always put you above the pack.

Ill also admit I don't agree that these are the most important metrics, and a lot of the time, these things are just a factor of where you work, and what projects you can get yourself on, but when you have limited info to go on, its a meaningful differentiator.

For this >>100203366 resume?
All your bullet points for the job experience should be active instead of passive. Say what you did with DynamoDB, RDS etc. don't just say you are "extremely proficient". No one knows what that means.
If you think your thesis is so interesting, put the name there. No one is gonna click on that link. Same for the paper.
Do not mention your low GPAs. Just leave them out. No one cares.
Do NOT use "..." anywhere. Never do that.
Cut out the interests. No one cares. Instead use the space to list more relevant tech skills instead of using ...
Your soft skills need to be explained in your experience section. Right now you just list them but have nothing to actually back them up. Why are you a solid leader? Did you actually lead a team? Because I see none of that in any of your work experience.
Unless you are applying specifically to fully remote jobs, leave out the "Remote" from your Jobs.
Your last the jobs don't really have correct job titles. "Business Process Automation" is not a job title. Neither is "Automation QA". Not a big deal but it's just inconsistent with the other two.
The formatting of your BPA position is also not consistent with the rest.
I'd leave out the bold "notable contributions" and just them all normal bullet points. Right now it kind of suggests that the other points aren't noteable.

And then a few smaller things which are just my personal preference:
I don't like those icons in your contact info header. Just do a normal dot.
Slightly increase the padding like this anon said >>100204257
I also don't like the font. It's a little too small and thin.
Horizontally center your name and the contact info row.

>so if we are between a candidate who has only worked on some internal tool that serves 1000 users vs some product with millions the one with the higher vanity metrics is going to get the offer every time all other things equal
Interesting, because for us it's the the other way around. If two applicants have the same score, the one without fake metrics will get the job, because he didn't need to rely on these to make himself seem as impressive as the other candidate. Of course if you have the exact same resume two times and one has vanity metrics (I actually like that term) and the other doesn't, the one with the metrics is gonna get the job. I'm not saying you should ever ever include metrics in your resume, just that it's better to use the space on something actually believable that makes you stand out. If you have none of that, by all means, pull all the metrics out of your ass.
>but if you have metrics that prove an impressive scope of impact
Yeah but that's the problem we have with these. They don't prove anything because 99% of the time they are just simply made up to sound good.

I can't find an image for it right now, but remember the political compass but with lazy on the one axis and competence on the other.
The best employee that a company can have is obviously competent and not lazy
But the worst the can have is someone not competent and not lazy, because he will actively ruin thing and cause issues while someone who is both lazy and incompetent will just do, well nothing.
