Idiots on Reddit didn't believe me, so here I am.Pool noodle rotted my joist in 2 days??I'm going to start a workout in my unfinished basement where I do some step-ups on a stool. I don't have a lot of height and my head has to go between the joists, so I thought I had a brilliant idea to guard the edges with some (brand new) foam pool noodles. See the photos. As life goes, I put just one up two days ago, and came back today to put up a few more. I decided to move the initial one, and the piece of the joist under the first noodle is now wet and rotted?? A chunk actually ripped off! What in the world happened? It's not like the foam noodle was wet, and the joist appears dry like the rest of my basement... save this one suddenly-wet, suddenly-rotted spot?I'm now beyond wary of using pool noodles on the joists, which I saw online in the first place. What happened, and so quickly?1.) I now know about bark wood2.) the area is actually damp to the touch, but air drying quickly 3.) it was NOT like that before, which is what the /r/DIY dingalings told me, as if I wouldn't know that.See 3 pics. Thanks for any insight.
2/3
1 does the wet spot have any odor?2 does anyone else live in the house?3. is the noodle discolored or dissolved at all where it was in contact with wet wood?
>>2786909>>2786908looks like bark delamintating, not rot. takes weeks to rot wood. the water is the mistery.
>>2786907You want ti let that dry and slather it with copper naphanate (edge cut preserver).
>>2786908>>2786909That was always there, you only noticed it because you had the noodle on it. That board was on the outermost edge of the log and the darker part is the bark.
If you are so sure it's rot, tack up another board and put a pool noodle on it as a test.
>>2786907That's bark you moron.>Reddit didn't believe meYou need to go back
condensation, that's why you gotta be careful how you layer construction materials for breathability
I would suggest using a nice Red or Yellow US-made pool noodle, instead of the Chinese shit you opted for. I mean, who knows what's inside that thing?Besides the US ones are on sale now, for $18 each (the 3ft ones--longer ones probably a bit more).Don't frame it as an 'expense', think of it as an investment.
>>2786907>1.) I now know about bark wood
>>2786955I've done so.>>2787041Maybe I am a moron>>2787043Thank you for not mocking me>>2787046You might be trolling, but I'm using a USA-made noodle >>2787047I phrased this like an idiot. I meant "now, I know about bark wood..."
>>2786908>>2786909That's not rot. Wood simply can't rot in a matter of days unless you're doing it intentionally (for instance soaking it in sodium hydroxide/sulfide solution which won't happen by accident). What you have there is a piece of wood that still had a chunk of tree bark on it after milling, and that bark has come delaminated from the core wood since the two materials shrink and expand at different rates. It's a safe bet that even if you had not put the pool noodle on it you probably could have worked that piece off with your hand. The moisture is most likely just condensation from humidity that couldn't evaporate due to being encased in foam, and that moisture worked it's way into the area between the wood and bark and loosened that bond even more.
>>2787060>most likely just condensation from humidity that couldn't evaporatedifferent anon but note that for condensation the joist must be relatively cold which is weird in and of itself unless the AC is blasting upstairs.obvious solution is to place noodle/s on other joists and observe results.
>>2787062Unless either the joist or the noodle was already wet to begin with, I think condensation is probably the only possible scenario?
>>2787060Thank you for this, I really appreciate it. I got a little frazzled that I may have messed up my joists.I think you have it right that the bark delaminated, which is no big deal, and that the humidity released from the wood just along with that as the water released from when I had the window open in the rain. Thanks again for not just laughing. I don't want to eff up my home's structure with something so absurd.
>>2787062I left the window open from a hot, rainy day to a cold day. I probably underestimated the humidity the wood can soak in.
>>2786914>misteryLOL MISTERY its MYSTERY you uneducated cleetus looking redneck
>>2787152when it's in reference to a dampness situation it is prefectly fine to use the alternative spelling jerk
>>2787155>alternative spellingLOL SORRY CLEETUS you aint going to troll me with that bullshit. go back to shuckin corn white boy
>>2787157Um, it's actually "shucking," sweettea.
>>2787152>>2787157You should try not being a faggot.
>>2787181lol SHUCKIN'
>>2787207you should try not being dark colored
>>2787209Your mom didn't seem to mind.
>>2786908Op retarded. Literal debris from the original milling
>>2787224this, as someone who's worked with 2x4s daily for years this is hilarious to mehe didn't notice the state of the board before putting the pool noodle on, pulls is off and is surprised to find a little bit of bark lmfao
>>2787347Glad I could give people a laugh at my likely stupidity
>>2786907>Pool noodle rotted my joist in 2 days??
>>2786907Have you not actually tested the area to see if it is rotted? Poke the area with a screw driver or something.
>>2787355>pretendingjust go back already and stay there
>>2787426I did. It crumbles under my fingernail. No screwdriver needed.
>>2787434I've been here since at least 2010. Were you even born yet?
>>2787068>Thanks again for not just laughing. I don't want to eff up my home's structure with something so absurd. That's OK anon, it's normal to be super nervous about your home's safety. That's just your inner Hank Hill guiding you, I tell you hwat.
>>2787456>I've been here since at least 2010LOL. if you aint been here since the beginning you are still a newfag. shutup newfag
>>2787456>I've been here sinceI can't hold all this cringe
