Tomato apologists always pretend there's some big mystery behind the tomato
>Oh, you don't like because you never had a good one
>You should taste the one from my Nonna's yard
There isn't. It just a watery disgusting vegetable like many others. It makes a good sauce, yes but eating a raw tomato is one of the most grim things in cuisine.

cherry tomatoes are nice

Did Uma Thurma justify tomatoes? Seems like only fags would hate them after that.

Yeah there's satisfying about the "pop" and the contrast between the skin and the juicy innards, you don't get as much of that with regular size tomatoes..... but.....

it's a fruit you retarded, uncultured imbecile. without tomatoes, great things like salsa, sauces, and ketchup wouldn't exist.
>>
>>20440012
I remember tomatoes being good my childhood but every tomato I’ve eaten in the last couple decades has been mealier than shit. I don’t know what happened there.
>>
>>20440110
Tomatoes turn mealy when they're refrigerated.
>>
>>20440029
Lots of vegetables are fruits. Vegetable is a culinary term for plants commonly used in savory cooking. Yes, tomatoes are fruits. Bell peppers are fruits. Broccoli is a flower. They’re still fucking vegetables.
>>
>>20440116
Technically broccoli is a legume, but it's autistic to insist on this outside of academic circles.

>>
>>20440012
I'm sorry you don't like delicious things.
>>
>>20440129
No it isn't. Broccoli is a brassica. Brassicas and legumes are not closely related at all other than they're both offshoots of the rose family.
>>
Tomatoes warm from the sun directly from the garden are indeed good, but I won't eat raw store bought tomatoes.
>>
>>20440179
Yeah, tomatoes like a lot of fruit go through a pretty big flavor and texture change when they are refrigerated. All grocery store tomatoes are not only refrigerated, but picked way underripe for transport purposes. So someone who's only ever had them from a store won't know what they're actually like.
>>
>>20440176
>he doesn't know about the other legumes
Like I said, if you're not at least a PhD candidate in horticulture or an allied field, it's not worth discussing.
>>
>>20440012
Tomatoes are scientifically considered a berry
As are pumpkins, cucumbers, watermelons, and bananas
>>
>>20440260
DNA tells us that bananas are more closely related to marsupials.
>>
>>20440215
Well I know a good bit about this so lay it out for me then. Broccoli is in the brassica family of cabbage, kale, mustards etc and beans are in the legume family of peas, beans, lentils etc. The legume family. Those are in completely different plant orders. You have to go back to the clade of rosids to where they are in the same grouping. So botanically they aren't closely related so in what sense are they?

The closest I can think is the French origin of where the term legume comes from but that seems like a stretch even for here.

I say that about avocados and IPAs, because often times people who think they don't like them have just simply never had one that was ripe or fresh. But if you don't like something as basic bitch as tomatoes/onions/olives/mushrooms, I'm just going to call to a pathetic widdle baby picky eater, because that's what you are. Full stop, end of discussion.
>>
>>20440022
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing that it doesn't belong in a fruit salad.

>>
>>20440012
There are two kinds of tomatoes in my life: Cento canned San Marzanos, and farmer's market tomatoes from April to November. I have little to no interest in fresh supermarket tomatoes.
>>
>>20440012
Why did you come to a cooking forum just to bitch about an ingredient you don't like? What do you get out of it? How does this conversation elevate your mind, body or soul in any way?
But I used to dislike tomatoes. Then I grew up and stopped being a picky autist.

They'll just never fuckin understand and its so complicated to explain it to someone who doesn't have the same view. I always saw tomatos as a slimy tasteless mess with a mealy planty texture at the same time, plus acids and dirty water flavor. Oh then to finish it all off; either a leathery skin or one thats simlar to eating that crust at the top of a soup.

I will go through a pint of my favorite salsa though. Can't explain it; love tomato things, hate raw tomatoes.
>>
>>20440012

>>20442587
I kind of liked tomatoes, until I had a vine ripened one. that ruined tomatoes for me, because where I live it is difficult to grow them. vine ripened are light years better than any tomato you can buy in a store.
>>
>>20444386

>>
>>20444455
I think the cultivar makes a huge difference, both for hardiness of the plant and flavor. you may be able to find some quick growing hardy variety that works where you live. grow bags also help a ton due to being able to use potting soil and how they air-prune the roots.
>>
>>20444549
oh and another useful aspect of growbags is they can be started inside and also brought back inside if it's going to be too cold or something
>>
>>20440553
I'm gunna have one of those tomorrow, that sounds so good

Bad tomatoes are fucking disgusting and are amongst the most awful things on the planet. A good tomato, in contrast, is simply divine.
>>
>>20444650
i like the bad ones too to be honest. The only ones I cant bear is the whiteish ones. I dont know where they get them but it should be a health code violation
>>
>>20444707
Those are unripe green tomatoes that are grown in hot houses, they are shipped in nitrogen purged containers that make them turn redp0nkx
>>
>>20444707

>>
>>20443933
>memed each other into thinking
That's unironically what happened. 16th century European peasants were basically no different than Qanon types.
>>
>>20444549
it can get up to 125 degrees here in the summer.

most plants just fucking die around june.

to grow a garden here I would have to:
do a raised bed. install a drip irrigation system, cover the entire garden with 50% sun netting. all this to get some tomatoes.

and still they just fucking die from the heat.

I oncee tried to grow grapes. I'll save you the story, when all was said and done my grapes (when I got some) cost me about $50 a pound. I am not kidding.
>>
>>20440022
Tomatoes might be a fruit botanically, but culinarily it's a vegetable.
>>
>>20445178
grow super spicy peppers
>>
>>20440012
tomatoes are great so long as you use them as an ingredient. eating a raw tomato is akin to eating raw flour
>>
Sometimes I'll slice up a tomato, sprinkle some salt on the slices, and eat it just like that. great snack
>>
>>20444899
It was more that nobles were always doing and eating crazy shit to impress and one up each other, and the lower classes tried to imitate them. generally speaking
>>
>>20445441
The mad man
>>
>>20445459
Tomatoes aren't crazy shit, though. They used pewter plates and the acidity of the tomatoes released the caused lead to leach into their food, which caused them to blame tomatoes. They were also grouped in with other types of nightshade for a long time, which just led to the idea that they were poisonous.
>>
>>20440012
Unironically agree. Raw tomato is repulsive and triggers me to vomit instantly. However, sauces and the like, immaculate.

tomato as is is pretty bad imo. but as a bolognese yum
>>
>>20441207
I haven't had luck with Cherokee purples. They taste great but always yield very poorly. Half the time they rot on the vine before they're even ripe and it's not blossom end rot. There's plenty of calcium and magnesium in the soil and I even foliar feed with calmag+. I didn't bother with them this year. For dark tomatoes this year I went with black cherry and black prince, which have both done very well in the past.
