acen is unofficially a 4-day con, so there is hella TONS of stuff to do on day zero. Cosplaying throughout that whole day is very common, not just for badge pickup. The basement of the Hyatt as well as that roundabout area under one of the pillars by the main entrance was bussin' last year. People drinking, playing music, playing cards, playing Warewolf, and just hanging out. There were a couple of parties going on as well on day zero last year. In terms of "official" events going on, last year there were some unlisted panels happening (which I assume were ran by staff or friends of them) and the video rooms were up and running too.

The midwest cgl scene is actually closer to what you'd see pre-2016 cgl be in terms of cat fights, petty drama, rumor mills, and so on. However there are two big differences.

1) Instead of them spawning their own discords to get away from problems they all stuck around eachother for who can only assume is drama fuel.

Is there anywhere that officially quotes that number in relation to their recent cons? Because the most recent con I can find an attendance number attached to is 2018 which was 14.5k. Since then there’s been the pandemic and Ryan has finally been exposed in a more widespread way in the cosplay community. I had a friend who just went to Midwest because that was the only time of year that worked for her and her friend group in college and they just kept going as a tradition. She had never heard anything about Ryan until seeing some shit about him go viral on ig in like 2021 maybe? And that was the last year they went. I haven’t seen any cosplayers I follow going there for years now

I tried that last year and ended up having to nope the fuck out, for some reason the vibes ended up being overwhelming in a way Anime Hell is not. Then again I took like a 20mg edible, so maybe just a hit off a vape this time. Regarding it being on Friday, I hate that they front-load so many events that night—when I ran Hentarmageddon (someday I will again, god willing) it was always a dice-roll as to whether I'd actually get to attend any of the late-night content I wanted to see. Even when I explicitly said "please schedule me before, after, or on a different day than _____, I'll work with whatever time slot you offer" they'd always schedule me during those events. I assume it's because Saturday night is for big guests/raves/etc.

As for her, it's her biggest hobby. I make the props and she does the outfits. it's a fun tag team thing for us. Her costumes this year are Aerith in the wall market dress. A casual take on morrigan with opening and closing wings, and I'm not sure of the third one. She'll spend most of the day at panels and showing off. I spend most of it carrying her stuff and keeping people from being too creepy with her.

If someone tells you at ACEN they know of really good room parties make sure you're actually invited to said room party. There is nothing worse than some goober telling you he knows a ton of room parties to go to only to waste about 30 minutes getting to said room and the host having 0 clue who you are or why you are trying to enter. That was the last time I interacted with such individuals as that. Be sure they at least know the room parties hosts name before following.
