I adore this thread. Any idea of where to find galleries for these things? A few of the old cosplay sites I used to visit are dead, and they're primarily from the early 00s.
>>

I too would like to know. Sad Panda didn't have a lot of pre-2000 galleries.

OP here, this is amazing. This was exactly what I was looking for, pre-2000 material.

I miss those times when cosplay was about fun and not social media points.

Ayrt, I'm actually a lolita with no interest in cosplay, but this sentiment rings true for us as well. I'm willing to bet we feel a similar mix of nostalgia and ennui for simpler times, when there was less pressure to be perfect and people just dressed up for fun. I occasionally stumble across these sites when looking for prehistoric lolita photos, so I'll keep dumping them here if I see any more of them!
>>
>>10887044
Another one of these “fashion is for fun!” Newfags. Lolita fashion was 10x different in the 90s compared to today. There was less pressure “to be prefect” because lolita fashion was barely an established fashion. You don’t need to be perfect, just stop actively looking like a clown.
>>
>>10887127
Been in the fashion for years, you seem triggered and confused about when the fashion was established. Does enjoying cute images of friends hanging out together, without the well-documented negative side effects of social media impacting their brain, equate to being an ita newfag now? "Social media links to perfectionism" is just a Google search away, anon.
>>
>>10887132
Nayrt and I completely agree. I'm both a cosplayer and a Lolita and since I stopped using social media and documenting my life both activities became 100% more enjoyable. I miss those times too when we had less pressure, but I agree that this pressure that we speak of comes mostly from the online environment. Nowadays I just put a dress that I like, put some shoes and accessories and go out or with friends without the pressure of preparing the perfect Coord. No one will see it, there will be no photos, so I don't have to create the crystallized version of the flawless coord.
>>
>>10887127
nayrt, but I initially interpreted what >>10887044 said to be about a time before hyper visual social media (and editing) with less strict beauty standards (models used by brands were more often less thin than they are now, there was also more diversity in faces. Not always the same v-line jaw/chin, big eyes, small nose, small mouth formula). Not necessarily bad outfits. You can find examples of good outfits, even by today's standards, from the late 90s and early 2000s. The biggest problem is finding pictures from before 2001. The best source is probably lolita history website.
>>
>>10887132
This is just poorly written; you start by saying that I’m triggered and confused because I don’t know when the fashion was established then do not expand on that statement and go to a entirely different subject on how “friends hanging out and having fun” equals to being ita? What? The confusing and weak writing of this post makes it sound like you haven’t learned anything about basic lolita coordinating since you started years ago, which is alarming for someone that has had months to research the topic.

I think what your trying to say in this post is me just telling people not to look like a active perma ita is (according to you) inherently bad and then associate it with japanese girls in the 90s playing dress up. What I said was true; lolita fashion in the 90s is very different compared to the subculture today, there wasn’t many resources to learn from and educate themselves with so girls would just experiment with the style before guidelines became more and more enforced in the subculture. Itas today do not have this excuse, there are endless guides for the fashion as well as overall tips for a good looking coordinate for new lolitas to learn from and evolve with. It’s almost like Lolita fashion is a subculture! And subcultures evolve overtime!

Can we please post more 90's goodness?

Does deviantart have tags for cosplay? I think that would be a great place to find old cosplay photos for the West. I'm pretty sure there used to be a website for cosplay from 2000 but I can't seem to find it, can't remember the name. It might be dead now.
>>
>>10891037
they have a photography tag, which is what most cosplayers seem to use. there may be a specific subtag for cosplay, but i haven't used DA in ages

Back when cosplay was about nerds having fun with their friends. Now it's just normies trying to farm social media clout.

it's all relative. 15 yo me would have thought >>10891116 was whore-ish. In the late 90s and early 2000s where I lived there were also one or two scantily clad semi professional cosplayers with giant fake tits attending every convention. Sure the large majority of cosplayers looked like >>10891115 but it's not like we didn't have any practically naked attention whores. Over the years there were simply more of them. I think it peaked around 2013 where I live, some people were showing up in c strings.
Current me isn't bothered by any of it anymore.

>>
>>10891271
I never cosplayed in anything revealing though. I got used to seeing scantily clad cosplayers so it doesn't bother me anymore. You should do the same instead of being triggered.
>>
We really have come far as cosplayers. A lot of techniques have been invented to make things better. Yes I adore the old stuff, but the new cosplays beat the fuck out of what you could do back then.
>>
>>10891277

Personally I'm all for good old fashioned honest sluttery. You wanna use cons as a way to get laid or indulge your exhibitionism fetish, fine. What bothers me is commercializing it, coming to cons and dressing slutty but only to promote and generate content for your OnlyFans or whatever.
>>
>>10891598
>What bothers me is commercializing it,

Why does that bother you and the other kind of sluttery doesn't?
>>
>>10891598
>I'm all for good old fashioned honest sluttery
>What bothers me is commercializing it
but anon that IS old fashion. Sluttery has been commercialized historically. Being promiscuous is monetarily viable, sure you have a rare slut who just loves being lewd and fucking, but that's not the norm unless you're in high school.

>FF7 cosplay in 1998

Man, imagine being able to cosplay Cloud because it was the new, hot thing
>>
>>10891403
the unstyled limp wig and makeupless face ruins it. older cosplays look "better" even with less makeup because the cosplayers are more janky and homemade looking and there's nothing super jarring. super detailed hd modern cosplays with crazy polished armor or wigs and stuff need the styling to match, otherwise it looks sad
>>
>>10891605
>but that's not the norm unless you're in high school.
it actually is the norm. the main problem is that the sluts are using double standards to pretend like they're classy. it's such a stupid ass front

>>
>>10898804
i hate people attributing so much to her. cons has shit like boothbabes before her, there were always sexy cosplays, secy gijinkas and cosplay porn, she just rode the already emerging trend. she's a product of anime becoming more mainstream not the other way around. simps were already at cons too they just used to be called beta orbiters. sluts are gonna slut and simps are gonna simp. and i'd rather have slutty fake fans than the standard bitchy fake fans who just think the design is cute that don't even have any nudes.
>>
I've always found these images interesting. I find proto-weeb culture fascinating. It's a cool glimpse into what the subculture was like before anime was even close to being the relatively mainstream phenomenon it is now. I have to imagine conventions back then had an entirely different atmosphere. Unfortunately I was barely a swimmer in my daddy's nutsack for a lot of these images, so I suppose I'll never truly know. Would be neat to see some video footage of the old cons.

One thing you start to notice with older photos is how many or them were taken by amateur photographers and neither them nor the cosplayer knew how to pose/frame a shot.

The photography, lighting and location usage got better but I get a lot more of the con vibes from these shots then the more professional ones which are better character references

I would if I could Anon. I miss everyone being talented enough to make their own stuff and happily talk about the technical aspects of it.

I don't mind people buying their stuff but now there is this lost aspect of things to talk about with people. And of course people treat cosplay as a flavor of the month thing because there is SO MUCH to cosplay VERY FAST so they just toss on the latest outfit from China and then toss it in the closet after one wearing because now there is a new show they must cosplay from. They weren't even that attached to the character so who cares.
>>
>>10911790
nta but i feel this. there are still some people who do it but it's not the same most people only craft or sew to show it off for e-clout. i remember being excited when i drafted my own patterns or designed my own wig, but the only people i shared that with were my friends and people at the con. now people just ask where you got your cosplay, they assume you bought it.
