I always went to Starved Rock out that way near Ottowa and La Salle for my birthday with my family for a long time I loved it so much out there. Almost every rural Illinois town is quintessential trailer trash poor and its not as romantic as chuds sound. There's very little work, you're fucked to high heaven by Illinois tax rates, and the weather is fucking awful. However, most of the time everyone is very friendly and some of the mid size towns have gotten a bit of money to revitalize their small downtowns so not everywhere feels like despair. Spring Valley and the surrounding little area is one of the most idyllic spots from my childhood and I'll always cherish it.

Income taxes are flat by state law after a referendum to change that got voted down a few years back.
