If the person who wanted to grow lion's mane in the last thread is still around, it only grows on wood. It prefers dead oak logs, but other hard woods and apparently sawdust will work too. Last autumn a whole pile of logs from a risky tree by my parents' house became covered on all sides by wild lion's mane. Several pounds for free, all because some random spores were in the right place at the right time. The stroganoff made from it wasn't very good, but I 100% blame the recipe.
