Number 2 is Winspector
Number 1 is B Fighter

Y'Know, if I were to ever put a label to my manga translations, I think I'd call it, "Well if no one's gonna sub the toku then...", because most of the manga I either intend to or have at least thought about translated are based on toku that have never been subbed, at least not fully in some cases, & some of them I've thought about translating *specifically because*, "well if no one's gonna sub the toku then..."

So basically the same demographics who watched those shows as kids? What a dull surprise.
>>
While going through shaider I also went through two episodes of akuma-kun a day and it was a pretty fun show(especially one younger mephisto appears). I’m surprised on how it abruptly ends, episode 20 felt like an actual finale with the cast going through the underworld and even coming across and helping out older mephisto get his powers back. Yeah only the first two episodes are subtitled but I went through understanding the show regardless. I guess the cast knew it wasn’t getting renewed from its first 26 episodes so they basically went “goodbye folks” though I presume the adventures continue, it’s very understandable as ultraman was much more popular and toei knew they had to keep up. Overall I’d recommend this one, maybe one day it’ll be fully translated.
>>
>>22495650
And finished episode 40 of shaider, down to the last stretch and I’m enjoying this one. As for villains go, although psycho king madoh was no doubt about the best MAIN antagonist of a metal heroes show, this has the best villain faction and improved on what sharivan’s villains were like

Wow, that is completely different, the fact that the author actually went back to do a continuation of the final chapter way later in 1999 just so he can end the story is sweet. In all honesty I think the ending to the live action version is better because gori was out of options and was at a last desperate stand in attempting to beat spectreman. By the way as>>22500374 pointed out he did to an epilogue story but of course as you said>>22500394 that would have to wait. Yeah not to much activity, I’ve been going through juspion and it’s really great so far, now at episode 13 where mad gallant is hiring galactic mercenaries for his megabeast empire. I’m wondering if for the giant fight scenes they had EX Toho or tsuburaya staff because this is the first time I’ve seen toei kaiju blow up like how ultra monsters typically do with miniature models.

In case y'all are wondering what's next for my manga endeavors, a while ago I did the first chapter of Denjin Arrow, Daiji Kazumine's most famous original hero, saying that I intended to do a chapter every time I finished a volume of something else (given how extremely long they are), so I'm currently working on the second chapter of that, then I intend to do another original Kazumine hero, Senkou Mack, which is roughly the same length in terms of page count, and THEN I'll get back to his toku manga with his Lion-Maru & Ultraman adaptions!
>>
>>22504641
Finished episode 20, this is getting good, no really this show is a lot different from the space sheriff trilogy and it shows, took what was great from the trilogy and blended it together to make already one of my favorite metal hero installments so far alongside sharivan, the fact that I’m not even halfway through yet(almost there however) is a great sign, it’s no wonder Brazil loves this show
>>
How is the Red Baron toku? Aware it was popular at the time, does it hold up ok?
>>
>>22507455
I liked it, it feels at times like a proto sentai series with the crew battling the robots on ground and there’s an inspector that’s both the comedy relief and a total badass. The giant robot fight scenes are well done and doesn’t try to ape off the ultra series
>>
>>22507727
Then there’s also Mach baron which improves the fight scenes but the show itself tries a little hard to be its successor by rehashing some ideas from the previous series, however the ending is something I did not expect at all that might have influenced anno in a way. If you are planning on watching it, I’m not telling anything, it has to be seen to believe

That awkward moment when the writing in the manga you're translating comes off kinda wonky, & you genuinely can't tell if it's because your translation is sloppy, or because the writing genuinely is just flawed like that. Like I thoroughly go over a line or scene, I'm POSITIVE I'm understanding it correctly, but it nonetheless comes off really awkwardly! Regardless of whether or not it's the fault of the original writing, it makes me afraid that it'll make me look incompetent!
>>
>>22511885
OK so I was specifically concerned because there was this line seemingly setting up a plot point that, as far as I'd observed from flipping through the rest of the chapter, didn't seem to be resolved, followed up on, or even addressed again after that, but now that I'm farther in, no they actually do follow up on it, which is good because if they hadn't I was afraid the awkward writing would make me look incompetent!

Getting close to the end of juspion after finishing episode 36. Yeah this one’s a top tier for me. As a heads up for spielban im keeping my expectations for that a little bit lower as I figure toei knew they couldn’t top juspion but still wanted to try something different while retaining elements of the space sheriff trilogy. Obviously it’s not gonna be a bad show at all(it’s probably gonna be quite good even) but I’m not expecting it to top juspion despite being a component of Saban’s VR troopers show.

>>22514140
That’s good to know, I’ll be keeping that in mind when watching it A little bit of a change in my watching of the metal heroes series, I think I’ll be skipping the rescue hero trilogy for the time being since all three FWIK are all very similar to one another and go straight to Janperson after jiban, in addition there’s other shows I kind of want to watch besides metal heroes(specifically I’m planning on watching gorenger) but I’ll definitely watch those three later since they’re probably great in their own way

Onto the final episode of juspion! I’ll have to say that Mad gallant was probably one of the best rival characters in these kind of shows, the fact he even holds a main villain title is a plus.
>>
>>22517569
And finished, fucking awesome show, easily my favorite so far which really says something because I did enjoy the space sheriff trilogy a lot. It’s got almost everything you want, a great setting and story, engaging characters, fantastic action sequences, mecha and daikaiju, it’s all there. Now I fully understand why Brazil loves this show so much, I’d probably watch it again at some point but not in awhile because I’ve still got much more to go. Up next it’s a dynamic duo show not seen since kagestar, Speilban!

Finished episode 28, things have gotten better with more creative ideas coming in, also unexpected villain deaths early on which is usually reserved for the final batch of episodes, but yeah guillotine’s a pretty good villain. Also FINALLY they had the grand nazca transform into its mecha mode, seems like the footage they had for its grand entrance was intended early on but went unused until later since they couldn’t find a place to give it its grand introduction, may not be daileon but still better than valdios that it does stuff even as a prop. According to Japanese Wikipedia, Lion-Maru was originally conceived as being much more like P-Pro's old Jaguarman/Hyou-Man pilots, to be called Lion-Man & to have a contemporary sci-fi setting like those pilots & its immediate predecessor Spectreman, it was the network's idea to make it jidaigeki themed to help it stand out more from Kamen Rider, after all it's not like Toei's gonna have the EXACT same idea at the EXACT same time.

>>22530525
I've been interested in this show for a hot minute but damn that mask really looks incredibly off

Almost done with spielban, I’ll just say that youmi was a much lamer reidar, didn’t even last 7 episodes and his plan was caught on by the villains. At least with Reidar he was pretty cool and his plan did initially work until he found out about psycho king madoh’s second body meanwhile his guy made a secret society that collapsed with his death. I’m guessing they had more plans for him but I guess he was too frightening for kids so he got killed off early. Just four episodes to go
>>
>>22534645
Gonna start the last 4 episodes of spielban, and yeah I discovered that WAS the last we see of youmi, didn’t fight spielban ONCE, didn’t contribute to the plot heavily other than having rikki turned to stone, a secret society that didn’t amount to anything in the endgame, he really was a much lamer reidar, also I just realized the main supporting cast from the Edison technology shop just flat of vanishes by the time helen gets her powers
>>
>>22535464
And so ends spielban, it definitely wasn’t a bad show, in fact I quite liked it, was very character based and some of the villains were fun like death zero, guillotine and pandora, plus the MOTW designs were top notch. I also liked the family drama as well and you really do feel what the characters are thinking with emotion. Despite all of that I do feel it’s the weakest of the five so far that I’ve seen so my opinions of each show so far looks like this (based on another anon’s watch along)
>Juspion-Sharivan-Gavan-Shaider-Spielban
Next up, the second component of VR troopers, Metalder!
>>
>>22535638
Oh and since I finished all of the shows that had the space sheriff roots, I decided to watch hikarion again, it hits differently after going through the first five metal hero shows

Started the first four episodes of metalder, I know it was cut short at some point but this is outstanding and very different from standard metal hero or other Toku shows at the time, this one’s even more character oriented than spielban, being the spiritual successor to kikider this shouldn’t be a surprise, and already we have our hakider equivalent with top gunder, looking forward to the rest

Do any subs exist for the Lion-maru series?
>>
>>22537480
I subbed the first 14 episodes back in 2020, not very well though, they were hardsubbed & largely dubtitled from the Portuguese dub, I stopped at episode 14 because after that I ran out of the aforementioned Portuguese dub to work off of, & now I'm translating the manga instead.

This vid popped up way down my youtube recommended and I recognized the girl from someone's post a few threads ago. Its a crappy text to speech slideshow but I could glean that some theatre troupe specializing in goofy tokusatsu stage shows reused Iria's suit design from the Zeiram anime. Later they re-designed it for a direct-to-video adaptation and got Amemiya to design their villain. Then that suit ended up in some sci-fi heroine AV. The AV is on dvd while the movie is stuck on laserdisc and vhs and it looks like this dude is the first person to upload photos of the stage show on the internet. Somehow it got me feeling weirdly existential at 3 a.m.

And done with episode 28, really liked those 2 episodes that were basically a small reunion with the space sheriff cast after starting this marathon and I think this show easily surpasses spielban in terms of it being quite character development heavy, not that spielban had bad character development it had great storylines. Also despite some of their cruelty in various episodes I think the Neros empire is starting to become one of my favorite villain factions

Almost done with metalder, monster army just lost its leader so things are really getting close to the end. I’ve really enjoyed this one and I know the story on how it was canned because it was heavily different from previous series and more adult oriented if you want to call it that. Now that I’ve nearly watched all of where the original footage that VR troopers got adapted from, I’ll share THAT video tomorrow Hail slumlord, master of low income housing!
>>22549920
I guess this is the closest to a live action series but hey that’s stage plays they do this “almost” all the time. Speaking of which champion red is doing some manga story that had some of the original writers from the 60s show, take a wild guess on what episode they’re adapting
>>
>>22549920
008's played by an actor mononymously known as Toyotaka (spelled in English), he doesn't have a Wikipedia page nor can I find info on his background anywhere so I can't & won't make any assumptions.

Almost done with metalder, robot and monster armies are done now and the final battle is on. But WAIT! Seems like there’s two more episodes afterwards until the end. Gonna get to those tonight

>>22551356
And done, it’s genuinely amazing and another one of my new favorites toku shows. The fights were great, the characters were wonderful, the villains were memorable(and I really liked how each “MOTW” wasn’t really any of that and really were just more characters), the story was quite good. I know why it got cut short at the end but in all honesty I think it was better this way my only complaint was that cooligan didn’t get a proper send off though one last fight with metaldar before going down in a blaze of glory like his other counterparts although I am very curious what exactly the original plan was intended had it had a proper 51/52 episode run, apparently one thing that was implied is that there were hints that neros might have been really a pawn for a bigger unseen antagonist that was never realized(only hint was shrouding him in the darkness of night as the novel mentioned). Despite this, I really did love this show.

Been a long time since I checked in on anything toku. Did Inazuman F ever get subbed?
>>
>>22551955
>spoiler
Coolgin was supposed to have a proper send off. Originally after the cancellation order but when they were given additional episodes to wrap it up the plan would have been a straight up gang war between the Armored Army and the Robot Army with him and Valsky seeing who would take over what's left of the empire. And it would have been the real Coolgin, not Neros in disguise. Oh and in between all this is when Top Gunder woulda been wounded by his former side and Metalder would kill him with his rifle as a final request. Dunno why it was changed because I honestly prefer that to the weird ghost ending.
>>
>>22553026
I kind of heard of this one afterwards while doing research on these original ideas, sure neros would’ve had a less climactic death but it certainly would’ve been a unique ending by having this darker finale, oh and metalder was flat out supposed to have been killed off as well at some point probably him and coolgin striking each other down, still liked the ending we had despite its weirdness
>>
>>22553036
Oh and there was another ending they had planned if jiraya hadn’t been going through early production issues for episode 37, basically it was more rushed and after the ghostbank blows up there would’ve been a scene where Neros followers wash up dead ashore on a beach and implies metalder, springer and topgunder perished as well while leaving it ambiguous, glad that didn’t happen

Seeing Kamen Rider drawn by Kazumine makes me ponder the timeline where he drew manga for Toei's shows instead of mainly P-Pro & Tsuburaya's, I mean he did do Nana-Iro Kamen & National Kid, but in terms of like the 1967-onwards Toei we're all familiar with, he briefly did an Inazuman/Inazuman Flash manga in Shogakukan's 4th grade magazine, but it’s really easy to forget that when it’s stuck in never-been-tankobon'd hell.

I’ve asked this before and I’ll say it again, there’s a mysterious soundtrack I keep hearing in various tokusatsu shows(especially from toei) that I haven’t identified that I first heard in ideon of all places. Earliest I heard was in one of the last episodes of henshin ninja arashi and latest was episode 6 of gavan and apparently a snippet of it was heard in one of the last episodes of red baron. It could be stock music but it still sounds very sinister and more similar tracks coming from the same source were used in 2 back to back episodes of inazuman flash, in fact the easiest way to find this track is at the very last scene of inazuman. Does anyone have a hunch as to exactly what this is?

"I was consulting a lawyer about copyright issues and learned that it's possible to make a sequel without permission without it being considered copyright infringement.
What this means is that, for example, even if someone were to make a sequel to "F8ABA6 Jizaris", which I am currently making, it would hardly be considered copyright infringement.
No, it's surprising.
You must not imitate the core ideas or emotional expressions of a copyrighted work.
So the sequel is okay.
But there seems to be a trademark infringement.
Eh? If you say that, then anyone can make a Jisariz if they rename it to something like "The Flower Masked Knight."
"A sequel is not a copy"
Even if a sequel is made, it is not subject to copyright.
No, that's weird. Lol
No, isn't that strange?"
>>
>>22576033
Finished episodes 9 to 12 on fireman and I think I’ll be putting this one on pause for now, former two episodes were fantastic but afterwards it just felt like it goes on for too long. Don't have answer for this but i've ben meaning to ask this for a minute and this reminded me, I remember coming across this Ninja Tokusatsu awhile back it looked to be made in the 2000s or maybe early 2010 due to the camera quality and i'd imagine it was an indie or local hero production due to said quality. I think the main guy was in a black shinobi outfit, he was fighting someone in a garden or something similar. Any help finding this would be appreciated.
>>
Just finished another chapter of Kazumine's original hero Denjin Arrow, as I like to do between volumes, it's a shorter one-off chapter this time instead of a giant combined story arc like the previous 2 chapters, but I'm hesitant to release it because of this ONE line right at the very end that has been fucking CONFOUNDING me ALL DAY! It's a line that makes absolutely no sense in context, but I've gone over the line thoroughly & I haven't been able to get any other meaning out of it. So if I may ask, is anyone here fluent? Because I gotta know if it makes just as little sense in the original version or if it's a fuckup on my part. Or should I just bite the bullet & just put it up as is, it's just that I'm reluctant to risk putting out a suboptimal product.

Lol, seems like an odd choice to watch with friends, but it's an interesting movie regardless.
This production company is really beloved among Gen X Japanese men and has quite a bit of history, being one of the earliest VHS labels in both Japan and around the world starting from 1981, among the earliest OVA/hentai producers, and the inventor of both original videos & adult videos, the latter also ironically causing their downfall when their more artistic, plot-centric soft style could no longer compete with more graphic videos.

I'd personally recommend this one, it has a more sci-fi type story, the girl's acrobatics are really fun, great humor and the 80s school drama setting is comfy.

have you guy tried using AI subs on these obscure shows?
>>
Really liking jiraiya so far, it’s very different from the other metal hero’s type shows, obviously it isn’t as good as metalder(it’s not fair to compare these shows this way) but a tv series capitalizing on the 80s ninja craze in its own country is easily something fantastic to watch, plus it’s got incredible martial arts, what’s not to like?
>>
>>22583071
>Lol, seems like an odd choice to watch with friends
Eh, me and my buds always watch the odd shit, like recently we had a few beers and chilled watching Entrails of a Beautiful Woman where a bunch of rapists get stalked by a monster and knocked off F13 style.
I'll bring this one up with the group too, thanks a lot m8.
>>
>>22586308
If I recall correctly, that has been attempted at least once, & the results were absolute dogshit. So based on that alone I'd say it's pretty ill-advised.

Yeah even if you had perfect audio quality (which ain't true of an old show), there's still homonyms, slang, weird references, and other things that AI cannot understand.

Winspector's really good, the back half of Solbrain is basically just a direct sequel. I get your trepidation but it's less three shows that are exactly the same and more one long series and then Exceedraft, which get really weird towards the end.
>>
>>22552997
I fucking wish.
>>
>>22537445
It's crazy how much of a fucking blueprint this show was for Heisei era Tokusatsu. Not only did it lead to Gridman (and overall the digital era filming for Ultraman), Tomy was still referring back to it design-wise when working on the Tomica Rescue franchise and even Kamen Rider had a habit of knocking it off (Kabuto in particular ripped off several scenes from it, some almost beat-for-beat). And you wouldn't even realize it because it's such a cheap looking show. It really deserved better.
>>
>>22594598
I know, I’ll get to those three eventually one day but that’ll be much later on. I’m almost done with jiraiya actually with only six episodes to go then tackling Jiban(perfect timing too lol) I took a break initially so I could watch Kamen rider for the first time
>>22594808
It did but toho was saving their budget for the recently announced Godzilla 1984 sequel. Speaking of that particular movie, I couldn’t help but chuckle when I saw the film poster and banner with his name very clearly seen in the background in one episode of byclossar when the cast were at the theater

Though the Fujiko Fujio duo are best known for Doreamon, Obake No Q-Taro, Per-Man, Ninja Hattori-Kun, etc,
they, or rather specifically the "Fujiko Fujio A" half of the duo, Motou Abiko, did a couple hero manga too, & I've got 2 of them raw!

Silver Cross, which isn't necessarily a superhero manga, more like a guns-blazing spy action sort of deal, looks really cool & fun!
But for some ungodly reason, I genuinely have no idea why, THEY PUT THE FIRST ARC LAST! Or at least this reprint did, back half of vol. 5 thru vol. 6.
https://archive.org/details/silvercrossmanga

Three Z-Men, which just from skimming through it raw is giving me some Cyborg 009 vibes, which may or may not be coincidental since they debuted 5 months apart.

Finished Shaider, wanted to check out Zaido: The Space Sheriff, that spin-off made in the Philippines. A few places, including an unsourced Wikipedia page, says it has 100 episodes. But how long are these episodes? Around 22 minutes, an hour, or are these mini episodes? Cause all I can find are clips, there's a link for the show in the pastebin in OP but it leads to an empty mega folder. I don't care if it's garbage I still wanna give it a shot.

Finished jiraiya and unfortunately had to watch episode 34 of nininger to see some kind of epilogue for his character I really did like this one, but in comparison to other metal heroes it’s different as I mentioned earlier, side ninja characters were great in particular and fight choreography was awesome. That being said here what I think of these shows so far
Juspion-Sharivan-Metalder-Gavan-Jiraiya-Shaider-Speilban. Up next is a now recently licensed show by discotek, Mobile cop jiban[aka in some circles Japanese robocop]

Does anybody have the rest of the Filipino-English Solbrain dub? I found 1-32 on archive but the uploader said they weren't restoring 33-53 because it's too low quality.
I don't mind watching the second have in VCD-Vision. Just wanna show a metal hero to some friends.

Ask the Apollo Dub Archive, they found it in the first place, but I don't know if they're active in any capacity anymore, I think they're technically still around via a Telegram? Worst case scenario see if you can ask around people who were involved with them. Except Kalhi Balto of course fuck that guy.

Well if you wanted the dub so you could show a Metal Heroes show to your friends, then I guess you're gonna have to ease them in with the dub, & then pull the rug out from under them & make them have to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUtK7Ktq50I
>>
>>22601458
Guess I'll say fuck it and ElevenLabs the last batch. Should have enough voice data from the first 32 to get some pretty good models.

Also, on a general note, this could be applied to a lotta shows. Might start doing AI dubs for folks to enjoy.
>>
>>22601729
If you want my opinion I'd say that sounds extremely ill-advised at best, both because of how uppity people get about AI in general & in the interest of quality. Besides making a dub presupposes you have access to the M&E (music & effect) tracks for the given show, & I'm pretty sure those aren't publicly available for ANY toku show, but you do you, I ain't your dad.

Hope someone someday does Ken Ishikawa's version of Henshin Ninja Arashi, I mean hypothetically I could do it, but I doubt I could do it very well, because it would involve cramming alot of long horizontal words into tiny vertical speech bubbles, & I already have enough trouble with that as is! Like, Arashi is spelled in English horizontally with 5 letters, & in Japanese vertically with 1 kanji, & the speech bubbles are designed with the latter in mind, you see the problem?

6 years later and my most popular post is still Mighty Lady. Coincidentally, the only reason the site exists was because some anon asked where to watch Mighty Lady 7 years ago. The whole Passion of Garfield thing also got memed into oblivion.
https://letterboxd.com/film/all-about-mighty-lady/

In terms of demographics, it's actually more varied than expected.
- Mostly middle-aged and older people from Japan and the rest of Asia (makes sense, I'm big into vintage stuff)
- Various types of fetishists, especially ryona enjoyers and some more obscure tastes like Kigurumi and robot girls, but "tokusatsu porn" is still one of the most popular referrers
- Strange niche film enthusiasts and occasionally reviewers like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi4sEPhzvyc
- A surprising amount of young women and diverse crowds from Youtube, ex-Twitter, Tumblr & Neocities. The number of views on this is actually insane. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biV2AEvOH_8

And of course just regular toku fans. But considering it's actually how people with no prior exposure to the genre get introduced to it at this point, I wonder if some are left with a wrong impression of it.

Top countries in terms of stats are USA and Japan, Indonesia and rest of Asia and Brazil/South America. Winspector is popular in Germany.

I find it charming that a brittish guy decided to be a local hero in Japan, but the action feels really sluggish. This would be OK for a stage show, but in camera, it looks awkward.
