Something I never got around to understanding was the difference between music file types. Best I understood was that mp3 sucks to listen to when on anything larger than earbuds. How does flac differ from ogg and wav?

>>46480546Broadly speaking, you can sort music formats into lossy or lossless compression (and raw too). Lossy formats, like MP3s, cut down on plenty of the amount of data present to significantly lower file sizes. An MP3 file will never be a perfect copy of the original recording. OGG Vorbis and AAC are also lossy compression formats, though they generally outperform MP3 in quality. Bitrate is the more relevant measure for quality; you've probably heard or seen of MP3s having bitrates like 320 or 256 or 128kbps, yea? That tells you how much raw data is being encoded each second. Lower numbers mean less data means lower quality. Moving up, you have lossless compression files like FLAC and ALAC. They can't quite reach the same extremely small file sizes lossy formats can, but in return they reproduce every last bit of data the original recording had. You can create a perfect replica of the original, uncompressed sound file with these, which is why they're the standard for archival purposes. WAV files are raw, uncompressed sound files, and take up the most space. There should be no quality difference between a wav and a flac created from it. Unless you start shelling out for nicer headphones and audio equipment, you probably won't hear a difference between a 320 kbps MP3 and FLAC. It does depend on a ton of factors, though.
