What are some good modern controlers for retro vidya emulation? I'm thinking of picking up an 8bitdo cause I hear good things but wanna know if anything has any suggestions. Preferably something with bluetooth and the dpad on top.
>>
>>10862897
I used an Xbox One Bluetooth controller for years. The face buttons and d-pad are really uncomfortable to use. The clickyness of the d-pad and it being recessed slightly make it unbearable to use for long periods. The face buttons have just a little too much resistance to them too, and the shoulder buttons feel like crap.

I recently bought an 8bitdo ultimate controller with the switch face buttons. I would have preferred the Xbox style, personally but this one has 2.4ghz and bluetooth, so whatever. It doesn't register the analog triggers in bluetooth mode, and in 2.4g mode it had some weird quirk where it would register multiple inputs at once in emulation station on my Steam Deck. It was the only controller with which I ever needed to set in the menu options to receive only player-1 inputs in the menu.

I like using the 8bitdo controller now that I have it set up the way I want it, but those first impressions sort of left a bad taste in my mouth.
>>
I really hated that controller OP. The SNES controller simply isn't big enough for all the stuff they crammed onto that. The shoulder buttons especially are tiny and feel like shit. If you want something with sticks just get a DualShock 3 or 4. If you want something specifically for 2D, go with an 8bitdo M30 (best D-Pad on the market by a long shot).
>>
>>10862976
Also, if you do get an M30, go for the 2.4Ghz version (it has less input lag than the bluetooth version).

I have not used it but the ps5 controller seems to have basically everything you could want in a controller.
-wireless
-classic button layout
-compatible with everything: Windows, mobile, mac
- gyroscope, built in microphone and headset jack for modern games
- sturdy

The PS1 classic was terrible, but the controllers are great for everything that doesn't need dual analog.
everything else, just use whatever has two sticks and that you are comfortable with.

If you need analogue sticks I would pick something like an xbox or PS4 controller
otherwise the regula SN30 is fine
>>
>>10862976
I have the snes 8bitdo controller and the dpad is complete shit. Constantly reads diagonal inputs and stiff as fuck on top of that. But I bought mine like 2 years ago so maybe they fixed these issues.

trying to find good DS2 or DS3 controllers is always a gamble because some look like the real thing but lack the analog face buttons, so if you play something like MGS3 then you will always be cutting people's throat with your knife

A 2.4g version of this would be perfect for me, most stuff up to gen 5. They make a wireless version but it's got 2 shitty thumbsticks.
>>
>>10862897
I got this one last month and it's great. Everyone saying the dpad is bad probably bought an old batch 3-4 years ago when they used cheap stuff.

That said it does feel a bit small but I'm pretty sure it's the same size as a SNES controller. Maybe I just got bigger and didn't realize it lol
>>
>>10862897
8bitdo is a fucking joke. Yes, the controllers feel authentic, but I still get false diagonals on a few of them and they're prone to failure. I get why they get good press, but no reviewer has the balls to fairly criticize them

Bought it to play fightans, but it's also great on emulation. D-pad is hard to get into, but once you get used to it inputs feel great. Buttons are clicky. I love it and play it all the time.

get 8bitdo's GBros adapter, it lets you use wiimote compatible controllers on your pc (this means you can use the nes and snes classic mini controllers). It also lets you connect an original Gamecube controller (personally I use the recent Smash re-release on).
the Nintendo Switch online controllers are also great, using the n64 one on pc is objectively the best way to play n64 games besides original hardware
>>
>>10865984
You know I bought one of those ralphnet adapters and forgot about this one. Whoops I guess, I needed the classic to snes adapter and added the former on as an extra anyways.
>>
>>10862897
That one is good
>>
>>10864441
Xbone controllers are uncomfortable as fuck and still use AA batteries.
>>
>>10862897
Depends on what you’re emulating. Nintendo’s SNES reissue pads can be made to work with anything with common adapters like the GBros or wired ones you can find on Amazon for better latency. Personally they work for any 2D systems I care to emulate, and for the newer systems you can generally use a DualShock 4/5 for any PlayStation game and an Xbox One/Series pad for any Xbox game. N64, GameCube, and Wii are weird, but I personally still have first party controllers for all of those so I can’t help you there.
>>
>>10866715
Use a charge pack then. Or rechargeable aa
>>
OP here, for all the people suggesting USB options, the reason I specified bluetooth was because it's intended to be used with an android device
>>
Sn30pro x2 have lasted me two years and still work. One is pretty much still brand new.

Basically any Xbox 360/one controller. Habe always been a go to for emulation on pc.

For phones: GameSir X2 Bluetooth, NOT USB-C(ITS CRAP)

GAMESIR G8 GALILEO: My favorite phone controller. The sturdiness of an xbox controller and fantastic buttons, thumbs, and dpad.
>>
buy controllers for analog emulation.
if you want to play nes / dpad games, use the keyboard.
8bitdo doesn't have a good dpad, you cannot be as precise with a dpad as you could with a keyboard. However good dpads do exist, none are on a affordable controller. I like the ds lite and DSI dpad, and I remember the NES feeling pretty good.
8bitdo is still fine, it's essentially just ps2 layout.
>>10867272
use the touch controls, it's pretty bad but it's fine for any retro game that isn't precise, meanwhile you have save states so the game will be 100x easier than what people back in the day dealt with.
>>

the device itself (pic related) already has controls I'm happy with, I'm more looking for a controller I can use when the thing's docked to my TV and I want some comfy armchair gaming
>meanwhile you have save states so the game will be 100x easier than what people back in the day dealt with.

>>
>>10865984
really? that sounds great, the only reason i still emulat nes and snes games on my wii is because i really like the classic controller's dpad
>>
My choice is a retrobit MD six button with the shoulder buttons. If I want analogs I just plug in a xbone controller.

8bitdo lite 2
it's what i use for stuff from stardew valley to monster hunter gen ultimate
>>
>>10862897
I use the 8bitdo pro 2 for most emulation, good dpad/buttons, it'd be perfect if not for the triggers underneath(they dont feel bad its just my preference), analog sticks could be better but a solid choice for the price

I would use the ps5 controller but its such an overengineered and overpriced piece of crap. I got stick drift within 3 months of using it which sucks because the analogue sticks and dpad felt great.

Xbox one/series x are a decent choice but you still need to buy a charging pack on top of the already steep price if you're buying new.

I have 8BitDo's original gamepad the SN30 (the convincing – in the looks department – wireless facsimile of the SNES gamepad) & its second- or third-latest gamepad the Pro 2. They're generally competent, but both have D-pads as bad as Nintendo's Switch Pro Controllers', even the much more recent Pro 2 despite 8BitDo & reviewers' claims they fixed that shit. I followed MLiG's advice w/ the SN30 & stuck some washers on its D-pad's contact points & it hardly helped. I've heard people complain about the Steam Deck's D-pad, but it's perfect compared to my Pro 2's in games like Bug Fables & Puyo Puyo Tetris.
>>
>>10863623
reviewers do nothing but suck 8bitdo's cock for free review samples, or are simply too retarded to know that just because a d-pad is a nostalgically comfortable snes facsimile d-pad doesn't mean the underlying mechanism &/or contacts are technically functionally good (toobers don't actually play vidya)

pcsx2 has always been the standard for ps2 & it's gotten quite great, not quite dolphin tier but still p decent, try referring to the wiki for game optimisation advice just in case

w/ xbox, after decades of xbox emulation being borked, it's gotten quite decent itself, cxbx-r first blew the doors off it but now xemu is where it's at i think
