> DCSS | Moronic meta | order update

Previously, I ranked the contrarianness of combos by 1-rune games and winrate for the race, background and class. This was too specific and volatile. Picking a different god for a popular race+class would not be considered very contrarian.

So I expanded the table to include sequel statistics for race+class (any god) as well. Contrarian rank now considers the number of 1-rune games and the winrate with the specific god. (This causes volatility for Mummy and Ghoul, both of which have a 1-win 100% winrate, but that merely means someone already did my work for me, so it's fine those two are ranked last.)

https://gitgud.io/koanic/essays/-/blob/c029389f8ac6597bd5790fc17f209c0d3281421f/Dcss-to-dcsf/Combos/Moronic-meta.md#user-content-table

Now BaAr Veh is the first playthrough, and Gargoyle drops to #15, a more reasonable ranking. The whole table looks right except Human, whose rank is inflated due to not accounting for meta Good Gods switching.

WhataburgerPattyMelt won GhFi Usk, and McSplat MuNe Yred.

McSplat's was a stupid win, since Mummy shouldn't stay Yred. McSplat has a 7% winrate.

https://dcss-stats.vercel.app/suggest?race=Ghoul&class=Fighter&god=Uskayaw&version=0.23&filter=Runes_%3E%3D_1

Whataburger is a retired elite player with a 71% winrate and 36 wins, including 4 with Ghoul. He did 15 runes with Usk, which is reasonable, although Kiku might be better. This is the kind of elite minority meta my ranking method exposes.

Rogue in Frog with a strong race feels very good. Stealth temporarily nuked by artifact boots, but with Tread softly you get very good stealth anyway and it helps A LOT during quests. Managed to finish some quests I've always failed before thanks to shit not waking up.

I get what you mean, early game is a snore in certain variants (and also V). But I like Frogcomposband's, you hit some early dungeons, do some quests and as soon as you've found base resists + confusion resist you're good to go
>>
> DCSS | essential combos | BaAr -> BaSk | SpSk -> SpArk

>> Barachi Skald of Vehumet

Ice Elementalist limits Barachi to light armor for Ozocubu's Armor despite his +2 aptitude, lack of mobility, +1 LoS and +0 Stealth.

Skald centers around Song of Slaying killing sprees, which slow Barachi must either do or die. With Veh's MP for kills, BaSk can sustain Infusion, solving Skald's mana shortage. Vehumet's Conjurations substitute for launchers, complementing Spectral Weapon during Song of Slaying.

Hop also synergizes, allowing BaSk to cast Spectral Weapon in a corridor, then hop over the foe to surround him. BaSk thus trains Maces and crosstrains Staves for eventual Staff of Ice. Skald substitutes axe cleave with Song of Slaying serial killing.

>> Spriggan Artificer of Gozag

Spriggan is so fragile there just isn't a way to guarantee survival to Gozag without heavy evocables. Her first priority is to find a sling and stones to commence kiting. Her speed, stealth and SInv allow her to make full use of the Random Effects wands. Gozag sells what she needs; it's just a matter of reaching him.

Spriggan is an obvious choice for Artificer, with +0 Invo vs +3 Evo, and a non-Invo deity. Artificer's drawback is of reliable offense, but Spriggan won't have one anyway.

SpAr had 9 wins and impressive 50% winrate, six of them with Gozag; this combo is known to a few.

>> Conclusion

Recent combo table revisions have been mere flips, not rotations, suggesting it is now nearly correct.

This flip dropped Barachi from contrarian rank 1 to 15, and Spriggan from rank 4 to 9. Minority meta wins again.

Now my first playthrough is Kobold Arcane Marksman of Fedhas, with zero god wins. The meta plays him as Berserker, Gladiator, Hunter and Brigand, ignoring his average magic aptitudes and gourmand for spell hunger cost. Arcane Marksman is a minority meta combo already; it's just the Fedhas synergy that everyone missed.

On a vaguely related note since I did have roguelikes on the brain as I was clicking, I wish there were more roguelikes with good sound. The only one I can really think of that I've played is DoomRL, I mean "Good sound" in the sense that it's both satisfying to hear repeatedly and provides some game feedback with positional audio/specific monster barks/etc. Sure as hell isn't important in the grand scheme of things but even in DoomRL I'd say the sound enhanced my enjoyment of the game

I've been picking up power armour accessories while traveling, and finally found the suit itself. It was in a random grocery store. Specifically, in a tile of open air right next to the grocery store roof. How? Why? Who cares. With the advanced UPS, it uses about three charges of plutonium every second. That means one fuel rod every two minutes and 47 seconds. That's a huge and irresponsible amount of power, and I think I'm gonna try looking for some cybernetics next.
Is there any difference between a power armour interface, and the UPS implant? The power armour can accept power from a regular UPS anyway, so I'm not sure why it has its own dedicated CBM.
>>

Visible problems have lots of competition, so to do the impossible, pick one invisible.
>>
>>474365705
Yes. It's still very common in various military ammo caches, and zombie soldiers can spawn with several kinds of 5.56 rifles that usually come with some ammo, but DDA has significantly more.
Also, most of the reliable places to find it are guarded by gun turrets (and a lot of the guaranteed ammo is inside the gun turrets), so you need a way to kill those. The best way is a obviously a rifle that can outrange them, which is a bit tricky if you're both shooting 5.56 NATO.
>>
>>474366156
my current playthrough is on the february 29, 2024 experimental version and FEMA camps and Police Stations still have the ammo boxes with 1000+ ammo.
camps usually have 5.56, police 9mm
>>
>>474367214
I've only ever found empty ammo cans in FEMA camps.

>>474368185
It's random. Empty ammo cans have a chance to spawn full, and that's several hundreds of ammo.

Hmmm, well there's Frogcomposband which is a *band with tons of content, dungeons, races, gods, realms, artifacts, and other stuff, there's Elona which also has a bunch of different mechanics, there's Cataclysm DDA, the poster child for having a bunch of mechanics that are complex but don't do much to enrich the game, there's Dwarf Fortress if you want to take that into account, it's certainly got some of the most complex systems in any roguelikes, atleast I don't think there's any which comes close to DF's wound system in complexity, there's also...

Well, I don't like saying this, but I think SLEX(Slash'EM Extended) might be a good candidate, from what little I know of it there's just so much fucking random garbage in the game that it could be considered outsider art in videogame form.

> KoAM (sling) | early build

>> Gear

Pick sling:
- Crossbow ammo is scarce.
- Throwing is weak without blowgun, high strength or god gift ammo.

>> Skilling
>>> Dodge vs Sling

fsim vs gnoll with whip:
sling AED
1.7 at SL2
2.5 at SL7
+.8 = +47%

dodge incoming AED
1.85 at SL2.4
1.3 at SL 7.4
-.55

ratio sling:dodge value = .8:.55 = 1.45 ~ 1.5:1 = 3:2

>>> Fighting vs Sling

XL1 stats:
- mHP 12
- fight 1.1
- sling 2
- dodge 2.4
- hex 3

fight +5 = 6.1, mHP = 17 = +5 = +42%
ratio sling:fight = 47%:42% = 1:1

>> Playstyle

- stealthy concentric stalker
- bullet one-shots sleepers
- reset range with Slow, spammed via gourmand

Nemesis = D:2 adder. Can blind-quaff. Berserkitis and Deformed are manageable.

>> Attributes

fsimmed with +0 short sword; results same with sling.

XL4.5 KoAM with 7 Str 15 Int 15 Dex
fsim vs adder: does 1 AED and takes .6
with Corona and Slow, does 1.4 AED
Slow reduces damage 50% = 200% improvement
Slow costs twice the MP but is 4x stronger and lasts 50% longer than Corona.
Conclusion: Usually skip Corona.

Slow vs adder MR:
failure 11%, 54% beat MR, total = 48%
with Int +5, failure 8%, beat MR 58%, total = 53%, +5%
+5% * .3 = -.02 AED received

Dex +5 vs normal adder does 1.1 AED and takes .5 = .2 AED net profit
Dex is 10x better.

Conclusion: Leveling Int is a trap. +5 Int cuts Corona's cost by nearly 1/3; gourmand doesn't care. Level 3 spells can wait until Fedhas.

>> Conclusion

Why most contrarian combo:
- gourmand hex-spam with +0 Hex apt
- level Dex not Int
- pick sling despite +1 Throwing > +0 Slings
- train melee or run out of ammo

Fedhas:
- carnivore cuts ration value 50%
- gourmand spams Sunlight (no piety cost)
- confusion stabs with +4 Stealth
- Wandering Mushrooms immune to Inner Flame
- stand on Oklob with Leda's Liquefaction

Tested and verified that KoAM (xbow) runs out of ammo if unlucky; mulches about 5 bolts per floor.

845 KoAMs died before a rune, out of 866 played. Ammo shortage contributed to about 3/11 = 27% of early deaths. Only eight won, a .92% winrate. Of those, six worshiped Oka for ammo gifts, missing the Fedhas carnivore synergy.

They die swinging a shortblade to conserve their last few bolts.

It is quite difficult to switch one's primary damage skill while keeping up with the early Dungeon difficulty curve. Troll Hunter can do it thanks to Claws 3; Kobold can't. These splats were unwilling to train Slings, unaware that KoAM requires a missile attack.

The character creation screen's crossbow recommendation is a trap, offering an easy D1 at the risk of a slow logistical death. This might be a reasonable tradeoff under a scoring system that rewards prudent retreat from the Dungeon, such as I've designed.

Otherwise, KoAM should train Slings until fustibalus mindelay or Extended when most foes are rPois, obsoleting blowgun poison needles. Then she switches to crossbow, with ample ammo accumulated. Sling and blowgun will still have situational utility.

Can I install mods mid save?
Also which mods are good in BN?
>>
>>474472789
depends on the mod
most will work fine, some may break
if it spawns new things it will usually work but you need to move to new overmap tiles that hasn't been generated yet
also you will need to edit your savegame manually, open the mods.json file and add the mod's ID that you want to add (found in the mod's modinfo.json file)

Just played too long and the entire gameplay as a concept got too stale and samey. It showed initial promise, but it just got to the point I might as well play minecraft at that point honestly, and that's for both forks. URW has different issues, it's an interesting iron age hunter gatherer simulation but it's just too limited in its scope for me to play it long enough to enjoy it. I think at some point all roguelikes eventually reach the point where they stop feeling interesting and you just burn out on the genre because there's only a handful of really interesting ones worth replaying over the years and when they're gone they don't get replaced by anything new.
I think IA was probably the last currently developed game I actually enjoyed playing and getting burned out on.

That's probably true, actually. I guess it's a bit of a blessing that my roguelike play is cyclical enough that I dodge that bullet. Never get good enough to routinely win except for simpler ones like JH but I also don't fully burn out. Still, IA came out of the blue so there's always the hope that something else will too

KoAM (sling)'s offense is too weak; skip D:2 Sigmund and she's outgunned by a D:3 orc pack. There's a solution to that: Fire Elementalist. Kobold's flat magical aptitudes are much closer to the maximum (+1) for Fire and Conjurations (excluding Tengu). Count gourmand as a +1 to magical aptitudes, and KoFE makes sense.

The real problem with FE is hitting oneself with Inner Flame. Fedhas' ally immunity and confusion solves that. Plant death costs piety; no better way to defend one's garden than with fireballs, aborigine style.

Identifying the real Fire Elementalist lets me finally fix the obviously-wrong Hill Orc Fire Elementalist, who should be a Fighter.

Having done the math on Arcane Marksman, Formicid AM of Hep now makes sense. AM is about Slow, which provides the escape Fo lacks, allowing her to reset range. Inner Flaming one's own Ancestor is an incredible synergy.

This three background rotation is probably the last one in the table. Only DDNe is questionable.

>> Contrarian table effects

- HOFE -> HOFi dropped from contrarian rank #8 to #17, naturally.
- FoVM -> FoAM jumped #18 to #2, surprisingly. Corona trap?
- KoAM -> KoFE stayed at #1, shockingly. I thought KoFE was obvious.

https://gitgud.io/koanic/essays/-/blob/80cdaee0228e6b49df3d582330110b3f440c4176/Dcss-to-dcsf/Combos/Moronic-meta.md#user-content-table

I feel better about solving Formicid and Kobold last, since they are the two least-understood races. Out of 130 games, only 6 KoFEs made it to 1 rune, an incredible splat rate. The lone winner exploited gourmand via Sif, missing Fedhas.

medieval class system and religious outlook. fantasy is almost always based on a modern view of the world so characters who have a different outlook (less individualistic, fill your role in society well rather than trying to move up, more fatalistic, more afraid of what they dont know, institutions and loyalty are based more on personal relations) than we have today. make the adventurer have a reason (ie disgraced knight, deserting levy in a foreign land, wandering monk living off charity) to wander around, have them do odd jobs and quests for people in the dungeon in order to gain trust if they want to trade etc. also have consequences for if the player acts differently than their class should act depending on who sees it.

For what it's worth the shield of reflection would put me at AC40 SH16 and shield of protection would be AC43 SH16 in v.31 so I don't know where anon's getting 8AC from. I guess protection shield would be 3 more AC and replacing regen with reflect amulet would be 5 more shield so 8 points of total defensive shit?

>I guess protection shield would be 3 more AC and replacing regen with reflect amulet would be 5 more shield so 8 points of total defensive shit?

Yep, the other anon's shitty suggestion (regen amu + reflect Shield) has 8 less AC than the other combo.

8 AC is vastly superior to only regeneration effect.

You could fsim it by exporting the character, but in this case I don't think fsim captures the difference well.

With reflection and regen, one can retreat from a pack, and the skirmishers (e.g. centaurs) will kill themselves on your reflection shield while your HP overcomes their damage.

If the pack follows you back to the stair, and you're confident, then swap to the protection shield and stairdance them in heavy assault armor.

KoFE is OP. Cleared the D:5 ossuary and killed the boss wraith with Conjure Flame, Random Effects wand and Flame Tongue.

The meta splats KoFE due to counterintuitive skilling -- KoFE should hardly train magic from D1-D5, and raises Dex. Flame damage is supplemented by sling or branded shortblade.

The sole winner only trained magic until XL8, explaining why the meta's performance is so abysmal:

https://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Gerad/morgue-Gerad-20180806-180715.txt

Kobold's magic apts are +0, so she starts way overtrained in magic relative to Dodging. Her starting Flame Tongue damage is fine, as long as she has the Dodging to cast it without dying. Flame Tongue is two-school, like all Fire Elementalist spells.

I trained Throwing this run, which was wrong. KoFE is surprisingly dependent on sling damage to conserve MP for higher-damage Flame Tongue and positional Conjure Flame. Throw Flame is a waste except for steam and sleepers.

>>474408075
sky island honestly sucks dick. in tarkov you're cautious about what gear you'll bring because a player might kill you and you'll lose it all. in sky island you're cautious about what gear you'll bring because the extract might spawn on the other side of a river so you have a complete dead run through no fault of your own. you're going to be doing the exact same unfun shit you do in early game dda except you don't even have the luxury of a zone staying clear because you're going to keep being dropped into different areas over and over, which has the added effect of bloating up your savefile 10x faster than a regular game
>>
>>474753847
I had fun with Sky Island. But yeah most of the fun was in early game.
It's not fun when you don't have time to clear a lab even halfway, or that NPC missions are basically impossible because you might not get the chance to return the completed mission for 10 runs.

> KOFe | skill ratios | fsim

> Summary

KoFE should train Dodging, Conjurations, Fire and Sling to equal marginal cost.

Since Dodging is the highest early skill aptitude at +2, it starts at lower marginal cost and gets most of the early training, allowing KoFE to Flame Tongue tank.

- Fighting and Short Blades are deferred and depend on weapon.
- Stealth is secondary (1:2) until Fedhas confusion stabs.
- Spellcasting is for spell levels only.
- Evocations is secondary since -1 apt for elemental staves
- Raise Dex

> XL1 stats

- mHP 10
- mMP 3
- Dodge 2.4
- Conj 1
- Fire 3
- Stealth 2.6

> Dodging primary

| Conj 6 | 18 | 13 | 14 | 16 | 15.25 |
#+TBLFM: $6=vmean($2..$5)

damage increase ~ 41%

Dodge:Schools = 1:1

> Sling

.8 AED vs adder with stones
+5 Slings: 1.1 = +37%
slightly less than dodging and magic, but not ammo-constrained.

> Fighting

+5 Fight = 16 mHP = +60%
Percentage drops at higher XLs though:
XL2 mHP = 15
+5 Fight = 21 mHP = +40%

without viable melee, Fighting loses most of its value to kiting.
wait for a weapon to train it.

How much ammo is there on aircraft carriers in BN?
Just raided one in DDA and sorted all the loot out of curiosity.

Random tidbits:
A total of -1800 kg of ammo (mass overflowed and went negative at some point)
Over a quarter million of 5.56x45 NATO M855
Tens thousands of .308 and 7.62x51
Two thousand .50 BMG
So much food it took 3 tiles of ground space
Four hundred liters of cooking oil
Almost three metric tons of coffee powder
Exactly one intact bottle of alcohol
Over fourty tiles full of emptied corpses
One undamaged AH-64 with enough JP8 to reach the closest military helicopter depot and refuel

All in all a cool dungeon. Gotta try starting there sometime. The amount of enemies is ludicrous but at least you have infinite ammo, food and meds once you reach certain rooms on the ship.

M2 turrets can shoot semi-auto, so one doesn't need much ammo at all. 20 belts are enough to wipe out a few cities of zeds. At this point only the minigun with its 50-100 round bursts could ever run out of ammo. Oh, there were also a couple belts worth of grenades for the Mk19. And lots of ATGMs that you can't even use.

Other supplies worth mentioning include enough metalworking stuff to build pretty much anything from scratch or keep a deathmobile repaired for the next 100 years. Lots of engines too.

Notable articles it lacked:
Tailoring supplies (there's enough clean clothes to extract materials from, but getting thread is time-consuming)
Alcohol for ethanol burner CBM (but at least there's plenty of plutonium batteries)

playin DCSS for first time in a solid 3 or so years. Really haven't played extensively since .18 or so. quite curious to see what all has changed. looks like centaurs and their replacement got changed. I see ogres are now Oni which i guess is cool. i remember they added AOO which looked stupid. also that they seemed to still have a hate boner for pure caster builds, making a bunch of spells touch only (agony for example) and generally overhauling necromancy and other schools pretty drastically.

Also somewhat unrelated but RIP /dfg/, even adventure mode rerelease didn't save it. I think its actually dead for good. Steam release killed it i guess.

ratio of Flame Tongue shots to Throw Flame: 1:2.46
Throw Flame does 40.6% of the damage of Flame Tongue.

Conclusion:
Throw Flame is powerful for generating steam.
Otherwise, use a sling for range, to conserve MP for Flame Tongue and Conjure Flame.

Correction, I measured by MP not by shots.

> Classic high elf playthrough, fret till firestorm is up, breeze through midgame, fret through a ziggurat, breeze through extended

The fact that Flame Tongue is over 2x stronger than Throw Flame makes clear why Deep Elf is a poor Fire Elementalist. Deep Elf has -2 Slings. Thus DEFE lacks a viable early missile attack to conserve MP. Nor does DEFE have a way to separate from Inner Flamed foes.

Essential DeCj gets Dazzling Spray as a defensive foundation that prompts Sif to gift Hex spellbooks.

Can't a survigga read in peace? How could humanity lose when eyebots can spawn infinite bots out of thin air? Eyebots should be tackled and hackfucked into being your own personal securitron army spawner. Bandits and survivors will tell tales of a SWAT survivor who shouts "I AM THE LAW" as bots come flooding in from every direction.

Fucking hell, was having a grand old time, first run was a NgVm (or i guess alchemist) because that was always my fav. Next i tried out the new shapeshifting overhaul, then a kobold ranged hexslinged, really nice class and works way better now.

Finally i did an elf summoner and that class also feels so much nicer now. No more exp penalties for letting summons do the work, imp now has an actual weapon (altho i miss the variety with shadow/ice imps), guardian golem is a lot more interesting, and so is the canine being turned into a spirit wolf which you can heal/buff with additional casts. Sadly died to a fucking OOD swamp worm duo.

I have to say, i am very pleased with the way the game plays now. Feels way more involved and less brainless alt tab. Good work.

Yeah current crawl is fantastic. Every potion/wand/scroll makes a major difference and the reworked mechanics that focus on positioning (spells, attscks of opportunity) are satisfying to master.

It's buffed hard, Garth has a bit to do with it, but he only brought it up to 21 or so. Mostly it's from wearing a helm of leadership, armor of leadership, fencing gloves of fidelity and a staff of charisma, as well as zapping two staves of charisma on my way up from Dwarftown, then again when they recharged before the first boost had completely worn off which got it to 64 when I entered BOS. I'm not sure how much difference it makes to the shop prices if they restock when my charisma is through the roof but I figure it can't hurt, and I was doing haggling too, which I'd imagine is helped by a high charisma score. At this point since I'm in the habit of getting my charisma into the 40s or 50s every time I enter a fresh level which means most of the new shopkeepers start out complaining about their children if I successfully haggle.

> DCSS v.23 | essential combos revision | KoFE -> KoCj | HOFi -> HOFE | DECj -> DEWz | OgWz -> OgHu

KoFE is weak vs D2-3 adders, who counter her low AC and short-range Flame Tongue. Missing is fatal.

Optimal early Fire Elementalist wears medium armor and only casts Flame Tongue; Hill Orc does this best. FE lets HO spend MP on something besides Smite, which costs piety. +1 Fire substitutes for -1 missile apts.

Kobold background alternatives:
- Conjurer - similar to Deep Elf. Lower apts but more stalking time.
- +Ice Elementalist+ - stationary defense, summons and slowing reptiles suits Fedhas' early Lair. DrIE better.
- +Assassin+ - Reject, can't wear armor well like Halfling. Wastes magic potential.
- +Berserker+ - Throwing primary, skips casting and Fedhas. Reject, HaHu does it better.

Conjurer has Magic Dart and Searing Ray, both of which counter Adders. Kobold's inaccurate sling complements Magic Dart. Long-range kiting suits Kobold's gourmand stealth, scouting sleepers to awaken at max range.

Conjurer is essentially Kobold because it's low damage and thus inefficient in hunger:damage ratio, which gourmand complements.

KoCj frees DECj; is there a better background for Deep Elf than Conjurer? Yes, DE needs to cast a lot, and Spellcasting enables that, via +mMP and reduced spell hunger.

DEWz frees Ogre; is there a better background for him? Yes, starting with Str 10 Int 19 Dex 7 is wildly inappropriate for a melee-focused Ogre. Wizard is a secondary background he can practice adequately via found spellbooks. Hunter provides the Throwing foundation for his missile attack, and Okawaru complements.

With all background mysteries fsimmed, it's time for the final table check. Can any combos be strengthened by violating balance?

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16hz39FBlFx_DvvwRnbE5ewbOXRAJB-3Od3MVlUXP25c/

Nope... Balance thesis confirmed!

That is an interesting point. Real mammalian Underdark dwellers tend to become fair to albino. High Elves are a genetic memory of the "half elves", an elder race of Avian Watchers who interbred with Humans. IIRC they look White with canted eyes and perhaps different ears. They are related to northern European ethnicities.

The mythical Drow are black and famously cruel. They are a combination of genetic memories:
- the Ant People, who adopted the Gray phenotype after being defeated and exiled to the Moon, yet retain their chitinous black fingernails. Large black nictating lenses are a space adaptation. They are indifferent to individual suffering.
- sub-Saharan negroids and their north-African hybrids, savage races with low empathy

> Barachi Skald of Vehumet | Song of Slaying

Barachi has +0 Stealth, takes 1.2 turns per step and has +1 visual radius, substantially increasing visible area. He thus tends to get overrun.

These traits turn complement Song of Slaying, when the problem is often a disappointing shortage of foes. That's assuming MP doesn't run out, which Vehumet's MP for kills prevents.

Mixing melee, missiles and Conjurations ensures mana economy, while Regen converts MP to HP without resting.

Now behold the beautiful music of my people:

11 Minutes Of Screaming Frogs Compliation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjCVsOBu6vc

This is yet another combo the meta didn't figure out. In v.23 seven BaSk worshiped Veh; only one got a rune and a win. The combo has a .61% no-rune winrate, and 32% 1-rune. The sword-and-bored meta overwhelmingly prefers Fighter, for its ease of o-tabbing on Normal difficulty. Such players deserve whatever slop Team Tranny shovels out.

barachi's slow movement + increased LOS is a perfect setup for massive Chei slouch bombs
>>
>>474910919
Chei synergy: Naga vs Barachi
- Speed: 1.4 vs 1.2. Chei rewards slowness.
- Stealth: +5 vs 0. Step from Time is a stealth check. Stealth prevents overrun while extremely slow.
- Invo: +1 vs 0. Chei is an Invo god.
- Poison: +3 vs +1. Temporal Distortion makes DoT immediate.
- Noise: Naga has mostly-quiet poison; Barachi has loud Conjurations.

Chei is balanced for Naga, so Barachi will always be substantially worse at it.

>Killed by a wound on level 88 of Asgard

Good run, rogue demigod of hades was very strong. I died to due teleport landing me smack in the middle of a big hall with like 40x unmakers that blasted me. Three times in a row. Play a *band long enough and RNG will get you, but maybe the rogue spell "major getaway" was better than teleportation, perhaps it lands you further away from the casting point?

Got a shitton of good gear around CL32 - used the same rapier until my untimely demist at CL49. The blows per round system is weird, and weapons with higher score than the rapier performed worse since the rapier got me 8 blows/round which all benefitted from sources of +damage (in my case, ring, amulet, cloak, gloves, boots). My only regret is not getting a crack at J, only ever fought him once (and won).

Player tools are retarded in frogcomposband btw. Not just the insane mobility via ?phase door or ?teleporation, but also the myriad staves (especially _healing) and the silly on-demand effects like destruction, genocide and banishment. not to mention stone to mud and teleport other. compared to other roguelikes the player is turbo powerful in frog.

>level drops
Still not sure why these are still in the game. Im gonna make a fork with no changes besides removing drop traps. There is no counterplay and it doesn't really lead to interesting choices so much as it leads to a RNG where either nothing happens or you fucking die because you land directly on top of some powerful enemy with no way to escape. They might as well streamline it and just give you a .001% chance of dying from a heart attack at any given moment

As someone pointed out in the thread earlier, Sil is barely a *band. So if you want the tactic0l aspect of DCSS/Sil, bands are not really what you're looking for I'd say. Maybe "tactical angband"? Infra Arcana is great if you want to have to McGyver your way to victory with tactical and strategical use of consumables, but it's way more punishing than either DCSS or Sil.

Been playing around with a dark/fire build, managed to win one. >>474920314
If DCSS is focused more on streamlined combat and RPG stats than dungeon crawling itself, tome4 is the logical extreme of it, it's a very love it or hate it game. There are 0 consumables, no identification minigame, no enemies that need to be hard countered with a specific mechanic, and a stealth system doesn't exist outside the 2 classes that have a stealth skill. It's also pretty much balanced as far as roguelikes go, class selection isn't a glorified difficulty select
as far as true *bands go gensouband is easy to get into because powerful races or named 2hus start with immunity to most statuses and lategame element resists that are hard to get on equipment, can cast more spells or start with their signature weapon

but at this dl if you're low hp you probably should've quaffed healing first or read teleport level, but greed gets all of us

player tools are very strong in frog but as you can tell, devices are not failproof. not to mention the monster power scaling, especially late game uniques.

>>
>the dungeon is filled with a malevolent force and a teleport trap appears
>you are yanked towards nearby enemies
>teleports me into the dead center of the ending vault of Orc:2 surrounded in every square by high level orc warriors and spellcasters

Why is this in the game? Doesn't it entirely spit in the face of the philosophy? There is absolutely no counterplay, or anything you can do to avoid it. It just happens, and if you are unlucky you immediatly die the next turn. If it weren't for the fact that I had a teleport scroll and 4 health potions, it would've been an instant death.

Hell, if the teleport placed me still in the same room again I would have died, and that happens all the time. If my rolls were unlucky i also would have died with 0 chance to counter.

I really struggle to understand how they keep something this offensive in the game. its almost insulting, imagine you put 4 hours into a character and then the game says "oops you tripped and died. Game over". This is basically equivalent.
>>
>>474953215

After lair malevolence is handled by using consumables, usually. The only truly bullshit ones are early D shafts or sometimes random tele in zot when you're low on ?blink

Actually did semi-recently though I didn't do a full run. That was one I played more of back in the day. Dungeon Hack didn't feel like it aged particularly well to me (The cludgey AD&D rules which work okay in something like Eye of the Beholder but feels even funkier for a single character roguelike, the questionable balance, etc) but oddly enough I also poked at Castle of the Winds recently which was another roguelike I played a lot in the distant past and that one holds together a bit better. Still fucky for having obtuse information on attack damage/to hit which sorta makes magic far better until you're really well equipped even though the default character icons are beefy warriors but it's not quite as annoying as needing to have wizard levels or save up coins and get an ID machine to identify gear in Dungeon Hack. Dungeon Hack does have spiritual hammers being hilariously OP though, still remember winning runs by playing a cleric and using two of the fuckers and kiting

No idea if there are any good mods for Dungeon Hack but you mentioning that stirs up memories of taking turns playing that with buds so I get extra vocal

> Why Kobold is the essential Conjurer

Conjurer's hunger pressure comes from Searing Ray, due to its higher mana cost.

Conjurer has the same spell hunger as other Mage backgrounds (except Wizard costs less due to higher Spellcasting):

Spell hunger for XL1 Human by background and spell level:
| hunger | 1 | 2 |
|--------+----+----|
| Mage | 20 | 70 |
| Wizard | 0 | 46 |

A level 2 spell costs 2 MP. However, a full Searing Ray costs 4 MP, 2x more. (Using the latter two MP is optional, but the backloaded damage is the point of the spell.)

Searing Ray is Conjurer's only high-damage spell from levels 1-3. Other mage backgrounds have either a high damage level-1 spell or a strong level-2 summon.

Recovering MP is slow, during which time chunks rot. Kobold's gourmand mitigates this. Thus Kobold has the most MP for a non-wizard mage, making her the essential Conjurer.

Need some advice. Gonna try for my first 15 rune victory. I've ascended either 2 or 3 times in the past. But I think the most I did was a 4rune. 2 S runes, the Vaults rune, and I think the abyss rune.

My current playthrough is a Merfolk Shapeshifter of Qazlal, and it has gone really well. Easiest game I've ever had. Found the perfect items early on to carry me. Storm form on d:4. Early game was smooth. By Lair i had statue form up and easily walked through Snake. Got storm form up at that point, and since then its been o-tab tier. I have a regen++ necklace, and 2 protection +5 rings. Between storm form and Qazlal, I have pretty much every resistance except torment. Its crazy because shapeshifter used to be one of the most difficult builds due to how many skills and stats you had to juggle. Now its super OP, maybe too OP.

I have cleared Lair, Snake, Shoals, Slime, Orc/Elf, Depths, Abyss, and Vaults up to 4.

Idk where to go from here. I never did any of the extended branches before and don't know the order. What order is usually done for Crypts/Pandemonium/Hell? Also there's Ziggurat entrance as well. The only item in the game I want is lichform. But I'm not sure if the torment resistance would even outweigh all the benefits of storm form.

Any pointers?
>>
>>475031805
don't worry about it
>>
I'm finally almost a real person
>>
>>475074308
I've never managed to do a 15 rune run but from my experience pandemonium and hell are usually safer than crypts so I would try that, that being said since you've alerady finished all those branches I don't see why you shouldn't go finish Vaults before tackling the rest.
>>
>>475074308
you can tab pan and hell bosses to death if you buff up or apply status effects to them but tomb is its own level of difficult because everything spams torment and the staircases are a one-way trip to bullshit
without any practice you'll probably either die or settle for 14 rune after barely escaping with 10 health and no scrolls
>>
>>475054728
>>475060204
The classes and builds you can do and gearing are really fun but all the enemies feel kind of samey and you just do the same rotation for all of them. On normal. Do you have to tackle individual rares in different ways on higher difficulties?
>>
>>475087723
Haven't you heard of ligni?
>>
>>475096901
The main difference on higher difficulties is rares are more common. While running away from one rare, you might aggro several more, so you are put on your toes more often as your best teleport or whatever is on cooldown
More rares also means areas that feel easy on normal mode like the old forest become harder because some of those snakes in the room full of 20 of them are now chronomancers

Im not getting destroyed but definitely feels dangerous as fuck right at the start. I am in lich form with as much fire resistance as I could get from armor. I figured lich would protect me from torment, but im not so sure its better than storm form. Most of the scary bursts of damage are from damnation, not torment. And im pretty sure lich form doesnt reduce damnation damage at all.

He's an archmage so he's more heavily loaded on abilities, and ToME has abilities on cooldown as a major part of it. Plus a lot of the shit on his bar is stuff he'd use in emergencies, items, inscriptions, looks like some item-based commands which may even be for items he isn't wearing any more since ToME will automatically add them to the bar when equipped but doesn't remove them when unequipped, etc. Looks confusing but when you're actually playing it's not bad, especially when you get into the habit of positioning certain kinds of powers in certain places on the bar so you know where you're looking for what between runs and classes

Welp. I got absolutely wrecked. My shit got pushed in so hard. Switched to TSO, then went into the Abyss and killed demons and undead until I maxed out piety with TSO. Went back to Gehenna. Cleared without too much difficulty. Went down to Gehenna: 2 and it was pretty much instant death. It was a huge wide open area, there were damnation hurlers fucking everywhere, got blown away from the stairs. Can't read scrolls so I blinked and got to a corner. Used blinkbolt to get as far in the corner as possible. The swarm was on me immediately. Cast divine shield, summoned an angel, we both just got hammered with damnation from like 10 different enemies every turn. Angel died in like 2 turns, I died in 3.

Definitely a fault on my part. I knew extended was rough, but holy hell i didn't know it was *that* rough.

He dies at the start of the 4th day of the game iirc. Or rather he's generated dead if you first enter PC:6 after the start of the 4th day of the game. I usually try (and usually fail) to enter and then immediately leave PC:6 before then so that I can come back later with the best chance of getting him out of there alive, which is sometimes just completely impossible anyway if, for example, he's generated right outside the vault, in sight of a dozen gnolls or something.

>>475137170
That's painful. I've been quite fortunate in my current run in quite a few ways, one of which being finding a pickaxe fairly early on which means that I don't need to worry about that happening since if it does I can just dig my way out. As I've said before, I kind of think there should be a hardware store in Terinyo, since a lot of mundane equipment is so very much rarer than one would expect.

I guess it's possible he got whacked by bad luck and a monster then since I picked the body up from a least daemon, and I believe I was still within the 3rd day. Trying to do a quick dog delve to lock him into living while you go level up is a cool idea though it does sound risky with the cave floor

Early pickaxe would definitely have been nice, though it ended up being moot since I splatted when 4 (four) goddamn ogre mages spawned in quick succession in the big room and one more in the following dungeon floor. Painful end to that character since I had some nice luck getting an early mithril large shield so I was pretty good on DV even though my PV wasn't super great, but it didn't matter with spells being hurled at me and finally getting pinned in a corridor. It was memorable though, not sure I remember having a character hit multiple ogre mages back to back that early in the dungeon before. Still managed to kill two before trying to run since they kept showing up. Even then I arguably could have survived that if I had bought those potions of exchange earlier, potentially could've saved me from ogre hell

> Kobold god sequence revision

XL 8.5 KoCj Dowkogixt is going well.

Fedhas is a mid-game god; she counters Lair, s-branches and maybe Crypt. Before then Fedhas's rot-for-piety mechanic is too food-expensive and slow.

Fedhas makes sense once one has +regen, usually from Troll Leather Armor. This can be reliably obtained from Orc, where Kiku is strong thanks to well-equipped orcs with low MR.

Thus no species starts worshiping Fedhas, but three worship her in midgame:
- KoCj worships Ely through Lair at most, then Fedhas until low piety, then Jiyva from Slime onwards.
- MfTm worships Ely for Lair, gets Troll Leather Armor, then switches to Fedhas for Rainfall polearming with Sticks to Snakes.
- GrEE worships Kiku briefly for a chance to learn Corpse Rot at piety*, then farms Kiku's wrath.

Kobold and Merfolk are too fragile to face Kiku's wrath, lacking Gargoyle's immunity to miasma.

Kobold's gourmand can afford the high hunger cost of Ely's abilities. Kobold's worship of Ely tends to be brief, since Kobold benefits greatly from a draining dagger and from spells such as Summon Imp. These motivate an early switch to tolerant Fedhas.

Jiyva feeds Kobold in Extended. Initially I assumed Kobold must worship Kiku in Extended to dine on Corpse Delivery; however, this would trigger Ely's wrath. Jiyva's abundant satiety complements Kobold's slow Stealth playstyle.

Jiyva's slimify saves Kobold from losing melee. Jiyva's mutations are welcome due to light armor. Apportation solves ammo retrieval, and Transmutations provides rTorm.

Kobold has +1 Invo, but +2 Evo is higher, and Kobold can train Staves in Extended, to complement Confusing Touch.

I was climping up a roof to recover a stash of ammunition I had placed there for an early morning purge I had planned. I didn't think to take my armor off because I was 4 hours into the play session and was tired. The building across the street was on fire for obvious reasons so luckily that distracted the majority of the more dangerous zombies, but I had fucked off one of my legs so I was pretty much doomed unless I took a risk and started blasting with one my sidearms.

>>475175927
The problem with KoCj is without a good branded dagger (venom, elec, drain) she may be unable to kill some foes, forced to park them instead.

Ely only solves this problem vs beasts, because Ely doesn't offer offense. Optional Ru is a better answer -- one that doesn't cut off KoCj from Kiku in Extended, whose Torment immunity is preferable to Jiyva.

KoCj should worship Ru first, not making a sacrifice unless offensively stymied. Once KoCj has +regen, she switches to Fedhas.

If stymied, then KoCj makes the sacrifice. Ru's aura complements gourmand patience, helping KoCj reset the range or stab. This means a minority of runs will be KoCj of Ru, which is unsuitable for 15-rune, but that's fine.

My mistake was worshiping Fedhas before +regen, which causes too much hunger pressure. Specifically, it rots corpses on other levels, preventing KoCj from retreating to rest before butchering corpses. Reason enough to restart.

The rule for all races is: Don't worship Fedhas before +regen. Even Gargoyle can just stockpile Kiku piety until it's time to switch. Safer to face Kiku's wrath in Lair anyhow, where undead can't trap him in a corridor.

>>
>>475204694
Every game I get hundreds of rounds and dozens of mags for it. The closest I've gotten to getting one was I found a nanofabricator template, but never found any nanomaterial to make the thing.
>>
>>475186731
I've been looking at Kobold wrong, trying to optimize for the Carnivore malus of 1/2 ration satiety (Fedhas) instead of the gourmand buff, which enables extremely slow playstyle (Yred).

KoCj might play even slower than Mummy, pre Yred. At least MuNe needs to hurry while his skeletons are up. KoCj just dumps his MP into Searing Ray, then retreats upstairs and switches stairs. Permitting proper dispersion is so slow that even gourmand can run low, particularly when pillar dancing heavies such as Ice Beasts and Ogres.

Octopode Venom Mage's poison kills non-rPois quickly and cheaply, leading to a rapid meat surplus. Fedhas' initial ability rots zombies, which is helpful for OpVM, since undead are poison-immune. Rainfall merely improves Octopode's stealth, but the synergy with Mephitic Cloud is incredible, causing foes to drown themselves yet leaving their loot retrievable.

Thus the solution is just to flip starting gods:
- OpVM Fedhas
- KoCj Yred

I was considering declaring v.23 balance bankruptcy. Now two Fedhas species are aquatic, and the third gets Flight at XL14 -- a definite improvement.

I want to make DCSS but easier. I think DCSS is too difficult. Even Minotaur Berserker is too difficult and unfair imo since you can't just run away if you're about to die.
A babby roguelike that will let you mindlessly otab as long as you build correctly, and consumables are mostly for if you have a string of bad rng or simply built your character wrong.

Recently, in BN, I ran into some NPC-populated lumber camp where the manager said that they hadn't really noticed the world ending, what with all of them being deep innawoods, and that was also pretty fucking gay. If it's possible for a group like that to avoid the blob infection, the madness and spontaneous zombification with a 0% death rate, how the hell did the apocalypse even happen? Also the quests they gave me were broken.
I feel like there's a sweet spot where the world is unambiguously fucked, and almost everyone is dead, but it's still implied that long-term survival and eventual rebuilding are possible. Not that DDA really implies anything, the "blobs fall everyone dies" is purely confined in Erk's design documents, and there's no reasonable way that the player could ever verify that what's written there is true.
>>
>>475257573
Okay, but what about SDL2?

>I feel like there's a sweet spot where the world is unambiguously fucked, and almost everyone is dead, but it's still implied that long-term survival and eventual rebuilding are possible.
Meh. I hope the long-term development goes in the opposite direction. Survival should become harder as time goes by and a long-term consequence should be a total planetary biosphere collapse. Gonna be fun traveling a dying Earth where only anaerobic extradimensional lifeforms could hope to survive without technology.

> the worst part of any roguelike is when you win imo because it means you can no longer play that character

Castle of the Winds did this right, with an uplifting plot that made victory thrilling, and a cooldown lap at the end to try out your new toys and flex on all the previously-scary foes.

DCSS fails at this so hard that it's actually morally abhorrent to win the game; one should destroy the Orb in the lava pits of Gehenna 7 instead.

https://gitgud.io/koanic/essays/-/blob/29727ebf68fc25f03c7853d9d64ee91b0d3c618c/Dcss-to-dcsf/Combos/Moronic-meta.md#user-content-one-ring

> Unleashing a demon-summoning WMD on unsuspecting surface-dwellers is morally abhorrent. It is far worse than raping a child in order to "win". This act of mass extinction will apparently transform Earth's biome into that of Pan, if not Hell. Even if such consequences are delayed, the player, who began as a level 1 vagabond, cannot possibly prevent whatever tragedy befell the Orb's previous owners. He has no clue what the Orb even does. If it is like Sauron's ring, then it has only been waiting for a suitably strong and gullible host.

In my defense I'm drafting the new MTG set for a bit and then I may play some riggles. Haven't decided yet. Actually played through most of part 1 of Castle of the Winds last night since I got the itch and my other activities weren't going anywhere. May play more tonight since it was a fun nostalgia trip but methodically blasting everything with magic was losing some charm and it isn't as thrilling as when it's near your only game. I tested OpVM Fedhas on D:1 via wizmode and he earned 6 piety without risk or effort. That's 2-3 floors to gain Sunshine, whose accuracy boost complements Octopode's constriction grabs and inaccurate Sting. The damage per MP efficiency of Sting is extremely high, the opposite of Conjurer's Magic Dart. Thus Octopode Venom Mage is the only combo who should worship Fedhas early. Low armor and high stealth makes shepherding Wandering Mushrooms worthwhile.

https://gitgud.io/koanic/essays/-/blob/f3d10610119a75592c715c0a47f128985c266a0d/Dcss-to-dcsf/Combos/Combo-table.md

Table's looking pretty good. KoCj of Yred is a voodoo priest, and OpVM a spawn of Cthulhu. The tarot card correspondences are fun.

I didn't expect everything to interlock this well, but I guess the early game got playtested viciously. I still expect some balance failures in Extended. The biggest surprise is how well the tarot cards fit. If that's not evidence of mythic resonance, I don't know what is. God 1 is the mechanical central column, but tarot card is the central spiritual column. Documenting the resonance will be fun. For example:

You seem unironically new, this place is a shithole. You should not be here. I should not be here either, but a month has passed, I guess.

The difference between bright nights and dark days ahead is complicated, but basically speaking, DDA was the original main game and it got taken over by people who wouldn't know game design if it hit their head with a brick, on top of nepotism, skullduggery and general retardation, complete game design changes for the worse in the name of realism.
Basically it's a dead game by now. It's not even a game, it's a pretend simulation made by people who don't know how the world works, on top of it being a mess of spaghetti code.

BN tries to rectify that by trying to bring the game back to what it used to be before the devs went complete cuckoo bananas.

Believe me, I understand. I was a big part of /dfg/ before it collasped. I relate and understand completely. I'm sure you're aware, but you should get out now, places like this have a way of working as a black hole the longer you stay. I'm sure you already knew though.
I have also noticed some of that stuff about cdda. It's sortof complicated because there are some ideas about cdda that I like that seem unlikely to be in BN. I know it's useless, but building settlements and shit is cool.
I also relate to braindead idiots taking over a game, in terms of common discussion and whatnot. Kitfox taking over part of dwarf fortress and removing shit like the GPL is still a very sore spot to me, so I understand the feeling. It's just frustrating to hear bs drama each time. Replayed a bit of Diablo 2 recently and I'm surprised how much roguelike influence still stuck with it. Dungeons are really dark and monsters can still surprise you. Game is full of unfair bullshit like stunning enemies perpetually stunlocking you, undead fetish instant gibbing you and funny curses/aura that reduces your resist by 100% or more.
I think aside from being an action game the main difference between arpg and roguelike nowadays is that arpg is meant to work with trading. There are always people who will play such games solo but loot drops are so dogshit that the difference between trading and not trading is like x30 time save.
It wouldn't surprise me if people just make a roguelike with an online trading mechanic eventually.

Well, most people aren't going to actually know the differences, since why the fuck would you simultaneously play two different versions of the same game? I know BN, for the most part, but I've no idea what DDA has been doing in the meantime. If there was a rework of how settlements worked in the last three years, then it's gonna be different, but it's just as likely that nothing's changed.
Personally I'm extra clueless here, since I haven't really interacted with the settlement building system. I only figured out you could order NPCs to do tasks like mining and farming earlier this year.

that was mostly directed at the people flinging shit in response to your post.
But DDA doubled down on the realism aspects of random things like pockets (which is where a lot of the shit flinging comes from) and carriable containers which have a set amount of volume or space to them. Whereas in bright nights as long as you have the volume space provided by your gear, you can carry it without restrictions.
Then there's nutrition and also proficiency, but DDA also has significantly more content since the BN fork are somewhat behind and have been playing catchup.
So take your pick, simulator or arcade, that's one of the differences between them.

I don't recall Dwarf Fortress ever being under the GPL. Maybe Battle Champs was? Kitfox is an abhorrent parasite regardless.

I really don't know either. I consider myself fortunate that Kitchen Sink Sci-Fi doesn't really interest me since I'd otherwise be interested in Cataclysm. I say that I'm fortunate not to be interested because about 90% of the time there's a discussion about it in any form here it rapidly devolves (or starts out as) a shitstorm of baseless ad-hominem that is difficult enough to put up with without having any connection to either side (assuming there are actually two sides and not one false-flagging as a bunch of assholes to make the other look bad).

I'm fairly sure it was. I know for sure it was copyleft, but is now not. I could be mistaken, and it could be that old versions used something that was in the gpl rather than being under it itself, but then that raises the question of what they'd have removed.
Honestly, I don't mind kitfox as a company. Their performative activism is annoying, especially given how they use it as a shield and to promote their own bullshit. It's more about huffing their own farts than actually promoting diversity or whatever the hell. Overall though, that's whatever. I mean it's annoying, but it's whatever. I also don't really care that they take some of tarn's money. If he's stupid enough to pay them for a dogshit resource pack you could get done better by fucking spacefox, then that's his own fault. But fuck me, they absorb everything. It feels like dwarf fortress is being consumed by some "epic wholesome" reddit horde bullshit. For fucks sakes, their discord has a channel called "the-memes-overfloweth". They're the kind of losers who put "keep (location) weird" signs and pretend theyre fucking revolutionary for drinking starbucks.
>kitchen sink sci fi
Yeah, same. For what it's worth, the kitchen sink shit is the least interesting part of cataclysm for me, but I find it rare enough that it sortof blends in and you can pretend it's just not a big deal, and they're already lovecraft aliens rather than grey aliens, so that helps it feel less jarring. The real issue for me is it combines toxic zombies with b-movie zombies/giant insects/radiation stuff., but that's a whole other thing.
Youre right about how it always devolves into shit like that though. Just like /dfg/ there's some terminally online retards focusing on being miserable and making others the same. Right elves, I say. Its a shame, really, since it wasnt always THIS bad on 4ch, but also because there's no real alternative. Where the fuck else are you gonna talk about this shit? Discord? Reddit? Give me a break.
>>
>>475325446
>re kitfox
their activism is also braindead, since "doomsaying" (which from what I understand, is being pessimistic about fucking anything) is against the rules. You're going to have a server hyperfocused on serving minority groups, but not let said groups be fucking upset? What's the fucking point then? A fucking pringles ad probably has more pro-diversity shit in it at that point. It only accomplishes showing off how "good" they are (or want to be seen as), but accomplishes nothing. Fuck me if youre a gay dude in any place on the planet where it's not safe to be gay or anything (you know, most places? often even in first world countries)? They take credit for everything, or at least the majority, but they do fucking nothing. Even when they do have a cool idea, they ruin it by adding stupid bullshit like tumblr OCs in it (see caves of qud), and everything else is bullshit, frankly exploitative gay "dating sims". They're the worst of both worlds. They exploit and hurt groups they want to support, and they also want to get good boy points. Fucking disney isn't that two-faced.

Sorry. I know it's not really related. I just have a massive grudge on kitfox and people like them, especially as someone who is part of said "lgbt+" groups, it's really frustrating how they talk for and about me or people like me.

It's just hard to go back to objectively inferior game, you know?

I probably could have adjusted to BNs subpar gameplay, missing features and outdated content. It might have been nostalgic, or good for laughs. But what's the point when even the presentation is years behind the main fork, why not just play DDA 0.C at that point?
Cata's CC-sounds is quite good as far as free game sounds go and it keeps getting better. I've played countless commercial indie games with worse sound design.

Is CDDA planning to update the oldest special locations any time soon?
Strange temples feel really underwhelming nowadays. Mapgenwise it's still the same old stack of mostly empty puzzle boxes, no variations, no upgrades, and the reward is one random artifact. And it's not even a unique type of artifact, it's the same random junk that you find by the dozens in physics/distorted labs.
This is worse than portal storm dungeon, and that shit is bad. The only interesting feature is that you need a special key to enter--unless you tunnel in from nearby sewers or something.

Mine finales are a little better. At least there are variations, unique artifacts and maps that don't suck.

I'm accustomed to bypassing early uniques Sigmund and Grinder, but KoCj can just isolate and annihilate them with stealth and stabs:
- disintegrated Grinder
- invis stabbed Ijyb and Edmund
- skeletons and searing ray killed netted Blork
- netted, confused and stabbed Sigmund

Gourmand patience is a superpower when stealth cripples the AI's pathing.

XL9 and Waforof still hasn't trained any Conjurations. Kobold has +3 Short Blades, +4 Stealth and +0 Conjurations. Short Blades has just now reached marginal cost parity with Conjurations, and the +2 venom dagger is still a better deal.

No wonder the meta couldn't win KoCj; their doctrine is to "always exclusively train the background offensive skill first". Or, as they call it, "killdudes":

https://www.google.com.hk/search?q=dcss+%22killdudes%22+site:www.reddit.com
https://www.reddit.com/r/roguelikes/comments/1dzdif/dcss_midgame_skill_training/

> Train killdudes till you can kill dudes, then train other skills till you can't kill dudes as well, then train killdudes again. Repeat as necessary.

Translation: Train offense until adequate, then defense or utility, repeat.

This advice is enshrined in the LearnDB, aptly encapsulating the juvenile glibness of a meta that has never been challenged by a difficulty slider, and feels entitled to win indefinitely as long as it pays attention.

Contrary to the illiterate moron, KoCj first trains Dodging (+2) until she finds a branded shortblade; this enhances her staying power during Searing Ray.

the difference between roguelikes and arpgs is turn based tile based combat. diablo can be fun but youre never going to get into a seemingly unfair situation, ponder over that situation and your character/items, come up with a novel solution and methodically execute that solution while adjusting it as the situation changes. tgeres just not enough time, and roguelikes often have more complex mechanics to exploit in fun ways than arpgs.

Im sorry but is Infra Arcana a bad roguelike? I want to like it, I really do, but you can't play around the possibility of a wall collapsing and there being a bunch of zombies or a pack of wolves on the other side (what are wolves doing under a random church anyways lets be real). You can't play around the possibility of walking into a room with full health and getting shot once with a pistol from someone off screen and dying immediately. I feel like I run into way too many bullshit situations in this game. Yes its "on theme" but it also fucking sucks and not in an ironic sassy enjoyable way.

I didn't say that's what the case was. The pathetic part isn't not banging men. The pathetic part is letting other people choose who I sleep with because they're personally offended. If you can't understand the difference, I can only explain it to you, not understand it for you. For what it's worth, bisexuality and homosexuality is common throughout history, especially in all those "great empires" you all like to yammer on about. Greece, Rome, Persia, and pretty much anyone else a child would know of off hand. The epic of gilgamesh has a part where he cried over his gay lover and goes to his wife after. I don't really care if you see it as moral or not, since your opinion on the matter is meaningless to me.

Yred and Fedhas are officially opposed, as senior dev gammafunk noted. The lemuel_oklob_altar follows this theme by guarding a Yred altar with an Oklob, which was out of depth for its D:6 location.

KoCj Waforof quaffed Resistance, waited until the Oklob fired on her Imp, then charged with Confusing Touch and stabbed it, dodging one shot. However, less fortunate KoCj's might lack the means to take the altar. And if KoCj is already strong enough to kill an Oklob, why not go Fedhas to convert surplus chunks to piety?

If Kobold sometimes worships Fedhas, then a Fedhas worshiper should sometimes worship Yred. Octopode is the obvious choice.

- Fedhas wrath is best faced in Gehenna:1, because the wrath is substantially fire-based, and Fedhas' freezing clouds counter rC- foes.
- Yred's wrath is best faced in Tartarus:1, whose denizens match Yred's durable summons.

Which other Fedhas worshiper is best suited to sometimes worship Yred instead?
- Merfolk is ill-suited to Tartarus due to -2 Earth magic delaying Statue Form. Merfolk prefers Gehenna, where his +1 Ice Magic is effective.
- Statue Form is far more useful to Octopode, who needs the armor. Flat apts make even Lich Form feasible, eventually.

Thus Kobold and Octopode sometimes flip gods:
- KoCj worships Fedhas when strong and Yred late;
- OpVM worships Yred when weak and Fedhas late.

I'll admit I didn't take the Yred-Fedhas conflict seriously; I saw Kiku vs Fedhas as the natural conflict, embodied in Gargoyle of Fedhas farming Kiku's wrath. I'm impressed the game mechanics proved me wrong.

Halfling Assassin also sometimes worships Fedhas (instead of Trog) if he finds +regen early. So the least-used god is Beogh, who is only for pre-Slime Orc.

Obviously exigencies can force a suboptimal god; god strategy is relevant because one often chooses at Temple.

>shot once with a pistol off screen and dying immediately
You can get pretty unlucky with cultists, but this kind of risk can be minimized if you're careful with noise, use shouts to proactively check for enemies (e.g. before bashing down doors), and if you explore areas where you're well lit and surrounded by uncleared darkness last.

You can get through the first half of the game by killing most enemies and fully exploring most floors, if you have good enough tactics

DCSS is pretty "safe" if you're good at it, you have superb control of your movement/positioning most of the time (some S-branch enemies mess this up though). random teles or shafts makes DCSS harder, which it kinda.. needs.

Yes, normal difficulty becomes an exercise in enduring tedium once one learns the mechanics. Easily fixed with some wizmoded Ru sacrifices on turn 0. Any game becomes boring without a difficulty setting.
>>
>>475472679
(Cont) however, the "recent" revamps of s-branches + attacks of opportunity + new late(r) game enemy types are very punishing for average players. A lot of situations in current crawl risk escalating 10x if you play them incorrectly. Some examples include handling the new spellcasters (paralyze from swamp witches, ally buff from spriggan shamans, the new spider bullshit enemy that webs you and casts negative dmg bolts), or the movement restricting shit in the midgame - webs, medmerize, barbs etc.

These things are okay if you're skilled, but potebtially game ending if you're not. I dunno, maybe it's fine. But iirc the global win% dropped last stable release
>>
>>475474073
The negative reinforcement is excessive. Noobs would learn much faster with an easy difficulty setting. But the devs must raise the bar to challenge elites cracking the meta, or obsolete their knowledge via radical revisions, or alienate them socially. An infinitely-streakable roguelike is irrelevant, and virtual social status is how they're paid.

> KoCJ: Yred vs Fedhas

Wow, Yred is overpowered for KoCj. Piety* makes an immediate, massive difference, completing the build.

Yred's meatshields solve KoCj's biggest problem: fragility. They supplement damage and screen her retreat, allowing her to missile skirmish to conserve MP.

KoCj can afford the 300 hunger cost of Animation (more than a level 2 spell), and to rest after every animation, back to full MP.

The holy weapon ban is a negligible drawback. Conjurer counters slow undead with Searing Ray, and Holy works better on heavy weapons.

Not only is Yred's piety gain faster, but his Animate piety* ability dominates Fedhas' Sunlight, which KoCj doesn't need thanks to the accuracy of Magic Dart and of the final turn of Searing Ray.

Kobold has -20% HP and is only good with shortblades, so despite +1 Fighting, she barely trains Fighting and has a slow healing rate. Thus avoiding damage via meatshields skips lots of waiting, allowing her to raise more zombies instead of skeletons, for better tanking.

KoCj is not meant to fight alone, but needs to advance at full MP due to expensive MP:damage ratio. Yred's permanent undead are the answer.

Fedhas is about point defense of Wandering Mushrooms, which KoCj does poorly, quickly running low on MP. OpVM has Mephitic, and MfTm has Sticks to Snakes. Both have MP-efficient damage, via Sting and forms respectively.

STFU retard, you can even irradiate your own food at irradiator plants

5x50 ammunition?

So has there been some kind of a psyop that DDA has removed radiation, or where is this retard getting his wild ideas?

It's still got mininukes too, tweaked to match the real-life mininuke: B54 SADM.
Newer additions include nuclear power plants and aircraft carriers with nuclear reactors.
Hazardous waste sacrophagi and their missions are also still around.

What? It's not been removed, retard. I had to walk to my ammo storage to check because it wasn't showing up on nornagon's app
>>
>>475513679
It's not showing up on the app because it isn't there. You're playing with Aftershock.
>>
>>475513920
So you're saying it's not been removed?
That the game literally still ships with it?

You expect me to pretend it's been removed when I literally have a sizable stock of it in my current game?
But yeah, looks like it's been moved to mods (not only aftershock, other firearm mods retain compatibility) in recent experimentals. Experimental-2024-02-15-2021 build to be precise.
Was the idea that radiation was removed something similar? Did they get moved to mods in some past experimentals and then back to the core package?

>You expect me to pretend it's been removed when I literally have a sizable stock of it in my current game?
If you need to enable mods to bring the removed items back, then yeah, they have been removed.
Does Aftershock also add the Skorpion submachine guns back? Because I think those were removed as well.
>Was the idea that radiation was removed something similar?
Nah, I was just looking through the list of item overrides, and saw some irradiated foods there. Turns out they were removed as separate items, but there's now an [IRRADIATED] tag that reduces item spoil rate.
Also the PR that changed it was initially going to remove the irradiation plant because there are no irradiation plants in New England, but Kevin interceded to keep them in.
>>
>>475534572
>If you need to enable mods
The mod is literally part of the core game, you can't even download CDDA without it.
I would agree with your argument if it was an external / third-party mod rathe than something that's always shipped with the game.
>>
>>475535104
Then I guess CDDA removed all CBMs and mutations, as well as zombie evolution, because the Classic Zombies mod is also "part of the core game".

Before I knew about the health system in CDDA I enjoyed eating candy and snacks as I found them and chugging atomic coffee and painkillers before combat. I was drinking multiple bottles a day. I had no idea why I wasn't healing, even after a dozen hours of good bandaged sleep. Now I avoid such items like the plague. Eat candy and die. Eat cranberries and live.

Do you think you'd have ended up here if you had had more sex in the past (more than once and then cried about it for years stalking the ex that forgot about you a week later, or if your ex was a man and you sucked his dick daily and he still left you because you're a polish homosexual)

Probably. To be quite honest with you my sex drive's pretty low but my roguelike drive's fairly high so even if I was a despicable sexhaver I'd stick with ragu. Being HERE, specifically in /rlg/ though, maybe not. Since I live alone I'll often have this thread ticking away in the background as I'm doing stuff and glance at it every so often even if I'm not playing a roguelike and posting about it. If I was with someone I might not have the floating attention to look at a thread like this
