congrats to Alexandra Botez for winning the Open B tournament at the Sardinia World Chess Festival
>>
ok i guess. i'll start playing chess. im going to watch a bunch of chess streams and then look at a bunch of openers

is this guy the most chad streamer

question: does anyone know a resource I could use to look up fairy piece values? i want to use it for a game design project im working on
>>
>>92703589
Maybe Pychess?
I'm not really sure
>>
>>92703589
I've found some info here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_chess_pieces#Relative_value_of_pieces

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fairy_chess_pieces

Not enough money, maybe next year.
>>
>>92706032
Do wish it was cheaper.
Paid $50 to go to LVL Up Expo and $15 to enter a fighting game tourney there by comparison.
I suppose chess tournaments don't often draw similar numbers though.

It's a weird that an open with a 125K prize fund has very few players above 2500; GMs don't pay the entry fee but they still fail to attract them:

what's the best way to organize your opening lines?
I've been creating lichess studies, feels easy enough when adding moves and comments, but not particularly great when you come back and try to read through all the variations, that view on the right sucks
>>
>>92708120
>all the variations
Create more and smaller studies, starting from a certain position, not from the beginning.
>>
>>92708120
Chesstempo is great for storing and memorising, but Lichess is still better for analysis

>>
>>92715226
You have to pay to get a title from FIDE; so, how to monetize this one? and what if a top player doesn't want to pay for it? or doesn't want it at all even if it's free? that would be embarrassing.
>>
>>92712011
It's not classical, and he's free to participate in both GCT and CCT.

Yes, the "Winning Chess" series by yasser seirawan. There's a volume on Tactics, but the other volumes teach the basics about strategy, openings, and there's even a volume that's essentialy a game collection. If you just want a tactics book, I recommend 1001 Chess Exercises for Begginers, Chess Tactics for Champions (by Judith Polgar) or Learn Chess Tactics by John Nunn. They're all similar to Bobby Fischer teaches chess, but harder (I cited them in difficulty order).
>>
Where can I find pirated chessable courses? I want the Killer Dutch videos, but they're obviously not worth 150 dollars
>>
>>92719787
There used to be immortalchessforum, but that's been shut down for a while. Apparently, chess piracy's moved to telegram groups, but I don't have any links.

In my opinion, the way the World Championship should work is this:

Start out with #1 rated player as Champion. Then, there is only a WC match if the WC is no longer #1 rated and it has been at least 2 years since the last WC match. The challenger in the WC match is always the highest rated player who isn't the WC and who doesn't decline the match.
>>
>>92721440
Are you crazy? China will do a series of closed tournaments until one of the players "magically" gets to 2900.
>>
>>92723265
Your implication doesn't follow from your scenario. Someone is inevitably going to rank up in that situation, it wouldn't even need to be falsified like you're scaremongering.

This guy just broke 1900 rapid in less than a year from starting chess.
What's your excuse?
>>
>>92721440
We can simply use the FIDE World Cup to decide the world champion. It needs only a few things to be fixed, like using Chess960 for tiebreaks.
>>
>>92724086
That guy can't even tie his shoes. Weird lie.
>>
>>92721440
You give too much importance to ratings. Their main purpose is to determine the starting rank of players in open tournaments. They became irrelevant if used for something else.
>>
>>92724086
I don't have the money to spend 12 hours a day grinding chess. Even if I did, chess wouldn't even be on my top 10 on how I would spend that time.
>>
>see that tyler1 broke 1900
>get depressed
>get off my dead end job's shift
>get home tired as fuck, consistently on 5-6 hours sleep daily for the last 16 years
>play rapid
>40 game lose streak because I reason by move 15 after blundering a piece
>try to shoot myself
>ran out of ammo years ago and cant afford more so all I hear is a click from my rusty trusty ruger
Anyone else? I dropped to 1400s. I want to die. I really should just kill myself.

In the Freestyle event earlier this year, which numbering system did they use to assign each position a number?

same as in Chess960, but they did mistakes; for example in rapid day 1 the position was 49 but they swapped rook and queen:

From the video section in the OP pastebin, then you can alternate playing on Lichess and puzzles on Chesstempo.

I just found out I could play against bot accounts on lichess (as opposed to the "play with the computer" option), but I keep getting "I'm not accepting challenges with this time control". How do I know ahead of time what time controls they ARE willing to accept so I don't have to keep guessing? I'd like to play with as much time as possible. It's a bot so why does it even care how long I take?
>>
>>92741063
https://lichess.org/player/bots

Has all the bots and the description usually shows the times. Lichess bots can play unlimited time control games. The community ones are limited, probably because they're hosted on a private server.

This guy >>92739212 probably has the right idea. I chased similar opportunities to get myself out of a dead end job situation years ago. Prior to finding those opportunities I was cutting every cost I reasonably (and unreasonably) could to save up resources and learned how to get enough REM cycles every week even if my schedule didn't allow for ~8 uninterrupted hours every day.

What are the best FOSS chess playing and studying tools that work offline for Debian/Ubuntu/Mint and stock Android?

I've been lugging a circa-2003 chess computer board around but it takes up a lot of space in my laptop bag, it gets turned on accidentally sometimes, it seems somewhat fragile, and I'm already missing one black pawn. What's the modern computer chess board market like?

His accuracy is still around 75, so I suspect that 1900 is a fluke, and 2000 is unreachable.
>>
>>92748947
I also want that but my circa 2003 computer board was $5 at Goodwill and the circa 1996 one I was using before that was free as a gift from my Grandpa so "expensive as hell" would be quite the escalation. I saw that some of the ones available these days can be used to play online chess with a physical board without looking at a monitor, which is cool enough that it might sell me on getting something nice.

Thank you, I'll try to make time to play around with it tomorrow.

a better bet is to grab a used 90's era chess computer from eBay. Built like tanks, their old processors will never die, and they are plenty strong enough for normal folks like us. Bonus: you have a hope of beating them unlike the fish.
>>
>>92764810
another option is the Centaur chess computer, which has a version of Stockfish with adaptive strength. Selling for a few hundred bucks from DGT.
