Yuan-ti. I'm thinking of pitting my players against some. What are some neat plot hooks involving them? How have you used them in your campaign?
>>
They were the main villains in my last campaign. You should definitely play up how alien they are - these are inhuman reptiles with worldviews and mindsets totally different than ours. They may feel no emotions, or internalize them completely, or other strange things.

You should also give their females big snaketits, to seduce stupid players with.

I played a Yuan-Ti once, went full Garak with it. Flamboyant and lovable spy shit to cover up the more sinister spy shit. It's a great way to use them, have them seem too 'obviously' suspicious to be truly a threat, then have their 'obvious' plan be a ruse.

I hope to run a one shot using a Big bad Yuan-Ti that is expanding his territory into a swamp town.(yes the inspiration is that one Courage the Cowardly Dog episode...) that uses its shed skin, fills them with materials/wards/traps and uses them as scarecrows to designate their territory. And the territory mysteriously keeps expanding. Come to find out, some of them are animated, and will attack the players that invade the territory. Re-flavor anything from undead skeletons, to golems that have good physical resistances, but each with the added benefit of yuan-ti's innate magical resistance skin which makes them quite deadly.

Use the old Ecology series version of the Yuan-Ti where they're gross and fucked up and evil and crazy as all hell, instead of this new, sanitized, version.

Here are my compiled notes for your assistance:

Ophidian - Stocky lizard-like humanoids standing four feet tall. Obligate carnivores with a venom that transforms victims into their own species. They have very low intelligence but a hunter's stealth and cunning. Most-often kept as shock-troops by powerful Yuan-ti, who may intentionally expose human slaves to their venom. The venom of the Ophidian is a necessary ingrediant of the Black Broth, which transforms imbibers into the Histachii. Although Ophidians can be created by transforming victims with their venom, they are also able to naturally reproduce (true whether born or transformed into an Ophidian).

Histachii - Human slaves forced to imbibe the Black Broth become the first transformation stage of the Yuan-ti lifecycle. Those who consume it become reptilian humanoids much like the Ophidians, thought more slender. The transformation process takes one to two weeks and is excruciatingly painful, driving its victims insane. The Histachii are breeders, used for producing more Yuan-ti. When Histachii breed with one another they create pure-bloods. Histachii breeding with any race of true Yuan-ti produce halfbloods, and breeding between true Yuan-ti produces Abominations. Histachii are driven mad by the transformation and retain only some low intelligence. They react violently towards any non-reptiles encountered, seeing anything non-reptilian simply as food. However, they retain enough intelligence that they will usually obey the orders of any true Yuan-ti. If provoked, Histachii enter a berserker's rage. Once transformed, Histachii typically live 60 to 90 years.
>>
>>92596808
Amphisbaena - 14' long vipers with heads at both ends, Amphisbaena are unintelligent, dangerous monsters. Although impossible to domesticate, Yuan-ti frequently keep captive populations within their temples. The beasts' eggs are a necessary ingredient in the Black Broth required to produce Histachii.

Pure-bloods - Appearing largely human with only one or two snake-like features (fangs, forked tongues, scaly arms & hands, scaly torsos or faces, or serpentine eyes), pure-bloods blend well into human society. Pure-bloods may live two to three-hundred years.

Half-Bloods (Malison) - With strong snake-like features such as serpentine lower-bodies, snake heads, or snakes for arms, the Malison are powerful masters among the Yuan-ti. Half-bloods may live up to a thousand years.

Abominations - Massive snakes with human arms and multiple snake heads, the Abominations rule Yuan-ti society. These creatures are up-to 20' long and devoted to amassing power and expanding their species. Although incredibly powerful, the creatures rarely leave their temples, preferring to allow lower castes to work rather than exposing themselves. Abominations do not seem to have an upper limit on their natural lifespan, but must regularly cannibalize intelligent beings or fall into a deep torpor. Thus the Yuan-ti must supply their Abomination leaders with regular sacrificies, or lose their leadership. Abominations are the only Yuan-ti who can cast wizardly magic.
>>
>>92596816
Snake Cults - The god of the Yuan-ti does not grant priestly powers to its chosen people; only humans may gain spells through worship of Sch'theraqpasst. Neither humans nor Yuan-ti understand why their god refuses to lend his power to his progeny. As a result, Yuan-ti are codependent on the humans who worship their god, as only the priests can create the Black Broth that will generate more Histachii and thus more Yuan-ti. Long ago, these cults willingly subjected some of their number to the Black Broth and thereby created the very first Yuan-ti. Since that time, human cultists have continued to worship and serve the serpent god.

Yuan-ti Society - City-states are centered around the massive temple complexes of the Yuan-ti. Pure-bloods and human cultists are the most numerous inhabitants of these complexes. The higher orders of the cults are its empowered priests. Lower members may rise through the ranks, but temple society is trecherous; members are as likely to be sacrificed or transformed in Histachii as they are to enter the clergy.

Yuan-ti Temples - Great stone and brick structures form a complex and defensible warren. The outer temples are often sites of worship or administration centers for human cultists and pure-blood, garrisons of Ophidians and Half-Bloods, or warehouses and markets specializing in slavery and metal-work. Deeper in the temple, Histachii are kept guarding the long-gestating eggs of the Yuan-ti, along with the dreaded amphisbaena pits. In the center of the temple will be the local Abomination ruling over the complex.
>>
>>92596824
Yuan-ti Conflict - Yuan-ti Abominations see themselves as semi-divine beings, charged with restoring Sch'theraqpasst through sacrifice and devotion. Powerful abominations are able to open portals into the Abyss, into which sacrifices are delivered. Some human cultists may even go willingly to sacrifice, believing that they will become one with their god (which is true after a fashion: the Mad Mind consumes the souls sent to it and inches closer to sanity with each sacrifice). The Abominations believe that they will become demi-gods when Sch'theraqpasst regains its sanity and assumes possession of the world, and that the most powerful Abomination will rule at his side. As a result, the Abominations consider themselves to be in low-level conflict with one another. They work together to assure that Yuan-ti dominate civilization, but each schemes to greater power and control than the other. Most lesser Yuan-ti care little for these machinations, but serve their Abomination devoutly regardless. To avoid open conflict, subjugated Abominations are typically deprived of sacrifices, therby relegating conquered foes into barely-conscious torpor rather than slaying one another. The production of Abominations is forbidden, and so no Yuan-ti are ever allowed to interbreed.

Sch'theraqpasst - The Mad Mind. Progenitor of the Yuan-ti who merged with his home plane in the abyss and became insane. His followers seek to restore his mind by merging their world into his. God of chaos, reptiles, power.
Abyss layer 111 - The Mind of Evil, realm of Sch’theraqpasstt the Serpent Reborn.

>>92596838
Ok that was the last of it. Basically the Yuan-ti are deviant, slaving, sacrificing, psychotic monsters outa Conan, and they keep humans around because their crazy-ass god refuses to grand them priestly magic and most can't use arcane magic and they don't have any idea why either is true.

>>
>>92598639
The in-world justifications for why evil snake people want to live among, be worshipped by, eat and sacrifice human beings are too convoluted for you? Sissy.
>>
>>92598639
They're not a naturally evolved species, or even one created from nothing by a god, but the result of a literally insane god going "I don't want to cure cancer, I want to turn people into snakes". Their biology doesn't make sense because it exists purely to satisfy their creator's transform people into snakes fetish.

Yeah I like that version of Yuan-Ti. The notes are my summary/breakdown of the original article from Dragon #151 1989: https://annarchive.com/files/Drmg151.pdf

I use it as the backdrop to my ultra-generic campaign I'm running. The players started in what they thought was the world's most-generic, classic D&D campaign world. In drips and drops they're finding out that the history of the world is "Well, about a thousand years ago the world was ruled by a Mesopotamia-style Yuan-Ti empire that successfully merged their planet w/ The Mad Mind. Most of the continents have sunk into the Abyss and you're the descendants of refugee ships on the last continent which has a century left and then everyone is gonna be in hell. So enjoy the time travel shenanigans."

Nakamura Enjitsu is the artist. That's the entire strip though.

How do you feel about snakefolk with legs?
>>
>>92627677
personally I enjoy the Yuan-Ti, which is anywhere from no leg to leg, to literal human with slightly snakelike features. So overall, I approve, as long as they keep the slender body frame to differentiate them from lizardfolk personally.
>>
>>92624388
The sarrukh actually treated the Yuan-ti very well. They let the Yuan-ti have the freedom to take care of businesses for them. Even let the Yuan-ti go when they make to make colonies of their own. It’s less of a slave-master relationship than you expected, like how the British treated the people of Honkong.

The Yuan-ti did find it disturbing that they have an instinctual drive to serve the Sarrukh when one appears though. So I guess the Sarrukh both breed loyalty into their DNA and treated them well.
>>
>>92627677
Don't see the point. All you have then is serpent themed lizardman.
When I think of a serpent, the last thing to come to mind is 'legs'. Yeah, arms and tits aren't really their either but even if you do slap em on it's not going to take away from their length, which I find essential to the serpent fantasy.
It's not a proper sneople until the weight starts somewhere around three hundred kilograms and their long enough to ford a small river.
>>
>>92628517
>The Yuan-ti did find it disturbing that they have an instinctual drive to serve the Sarrukh when one appears though. So I guess the Sarrukh both breed loyalty into their DNA and treated them well.
This is an underutilized concept; masters who are able to give their slaves a very long leash and agreeable treatment because they've genetically engineered them to be loyal. It raises interesting questions about free will and whether pleasant slavery is on the same moral plane as more traditional forms of slavery.
