It's purely done because due to European noise regulations and cars being sold worldwide new cars have exhausts that are too quiet along with having too much NVH (sound deadening, thicker glass, stiffer bodies) that isolate the driver from any exterior noise.I never understood the complaints about it, I remember in the early 2010s Ford for example used a tube from the engine bay into the cabin to channel sound...while at the same time having Soundscreen Acoustic Glass to soundproof.

Some places like Paris and NYC go as far having noise cameras, while California highway patrol has been known to defect factory stock cars like Hellcats and Elantra Ns.Some of these new sporty cars have the same interior road noise figures as the original Lexus LS400.
