Meanwhile the rest of the world refuel from a probe at the front of the aircraft? Are they super selfish?Allied plane: "I need air refluel"Americans: "Uh, sorry, our system is not compatible."

>>61498626Stealth and aerodynamics.
>>61498626It's a safety thing
>>61498626Flow rate, the Navy uses probe and drogue because it's much easier in rough weather and there aren't alternate airports in the ocean but the downside is a flexible hose flows fuel much slower. The Airforce uses booms because they are much faster and if the weather is too bad to connect they aren't in the middle of the ocean.
because when you load from the top the pilot can visibly see whats going on
>>61498626The drogue refuelling system is limited to 1000-2000lbs of fuel per minute, whereas the boom/probe system can do 6000lbs per minute of fuel, however most of the fighter aircraft are limited to less than 3000lbs of fuel per minute, regardless of the system used. So the boom loses its primary advantage with fighter refuelling. The drogue system also allows you to refuel two aircraft at once (one from each wing).
>>61498626As you can see, the F-35 gets refueled by drogue
>>61498626Actually, the US uses both systems. Picrel. The flying boom is actually safer and more efficient since any leaked fuel will just fall right into the socket. The Drogue and Probe system inevitably spills some fuel all over the refueling aircraft but it's easier to work with and outfit.
>>61498714That a K? What/when the heck was going on here?
>>61499085Likely a busted jet being moved to the land for major repairs.
>>61499085The F-35 is one of the non-flying prototypes. It's being moved by the heavy lift helicopter to a new location, because it's a pain in the ass to move a plane by road and the helicopter pilots probably needed monthly flight hours anyways. The helicopter is using a shitload of gas to carry the F-35, so it gets a flying top up from the tanker. All of that is self evident from the picture, why would it be confusing?>>61498704>limited to less than 3000lbs of fuel per minuteSo, they'd still be getting fueled drastically faster than they would over a drogue. Also, refueling over the boom allows the fighters the advantage of using all the tankers that the service buys for bombers. Boom fueling makes better sense from an operational perspective. Similar to running all ground vehicles on jet fuel, even if it makes them run worse. They accept the minor downside for larger gains.
>>61498714FFM threesomes are the best
>>61499186> even if it makes them run worse. It doesn’t though, as long as you tune the engines to run off jet fuel
>>61499085>04.24.2024>Photo by Kyra Helwick>U.S. Marines flying a CH-53K King Stallion heavy-lift helicopter transported an F-35C Lightning II airframe from the F-35 Integrated Test Force at Patuxent River (Pax ITF) to a Navy unit located at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, April 24.>A Marine aviator from Marine Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 (VMX-1) piloted the most powerful helicopter in the Department of Defense that carried the inoperable airframe, which was without mission and propulsion systems, outer wings, or additional equipment, to the Prototype, Manufacturing and Test (PMT) Department of the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Lakehurst for use in future emergency recovery systems testing.
>>61499200It does. Tuning them can help, but I tell you they run worse, especially if it's got a turbo. We got our mechanics to gets an ETP memo signed that let us refuel our RG-33s (w/ cummins engines) and cougars (w/ cat engines) with diesel and they measured less required maintenance over the two years it was in effect.Like, it's not killing the engines early, but it fucks with the fuel system and top end apparently.
>>61499266For diesel engines compression ratio plays a huge role in tuning but it's done in the design phase and can't be changed so you have to pick a fuel it'll run best on or pick the middle and have it run a bit shit on everything.
Having this on the front of your stealth fighter isn't very aerodynamic or stealthy
>>61499322Seems to work on the F-35.
>>61499344On the B/C yes, it's not included on the F-35A unless specifically ordered that way, AFAIK it's just an increase in the cost, no real trade-off in performance as nothing in the F-35A normally occupies the space the probe takes up.but yeah, a normal F-35A doesn't have the probe.
>>61499396The A doesn't have it because the Air Force uses booms, the B & C do because the Navy used drogues.
>>61499411USAF uses both since USAF is often called in to refuel for the marines and navy. And again, the A can get the probe for drogue refuelling. It's just not standard.I'd even say many of the foreign F-35A orders likely ordered the probe system for their F-35s as the majority of European airforces have drogue/probe refuelling capability only.
>>61499431>USAF uses bothIf there any AF plane with a probe? I know the tankers can attack a drogue to the boom but what has a probe?
>>61498704>>61498714>>61498726>SIIIIP
>>61499452> what has a probe?Helicopters
>>61499558Every time I see this it makes my pooper pucker, thanks for the great webms.
I understand drogue refueling, but how the hell do they line up the boom slot properly?
>>61499643There are lights on the bottom of the tanker that tell you to move forward / back and up / down. Once you are in the right spot the boom operator uses the fins on the boom to steer it into the slot.I can't only speak from DCS experiance but boom is way harder.
>>61498626The only reason the rest of the world has aerial refueling at all is because America let it be so. Shut up and know your place, thirdie.
>>61499452The KC-135 can use a modified version of the same underwing pod the Marines have on their KC-130s. It doesn't change anything about the boom. The KC-46 has both systems built in on the centerline.
>>61499643There is a boom operator that can do precision movements on the boom arm to line it up.The drogue system doesn't require an operator so that's another potential advantage of that system.

>>61498704>whereas the boom/probe system can do 6000lbs per minute of fuelactually the new KC-46 can supposedly do around 8000lbs per minute, but I don't know any plane that can currently accept that fuel flow rate.
>>61499190Clearly MMF with bi-male
>Rest of the world Oh its a butthurt yuro mad his system isnt adopted
>>61499215Ah interesting, I was curious about what operational capacity a Kilo was already being used in, but that explains it.
Air force = the airplane is female, because the probe goes into the airplaneNavy = the airplane is male. Because the prope goes into the refueling plane
>>61499923Nah. It’s clearly interracial FFM. See, the F-35 is undeniably, inarguably female. This is known, pic related.Probe-and-drogue is clearly a metaphor for some flavor of insertion, with the tanker being the bottom. Since the KC130 doesn’t have a boom, it’s clearly female. So this means that it’s some bizarre setup where the dude is fucking one chick, while having another in a lift-and-carry position, probably so she can watch. And >>61498726 is clearly DP
>>61499431>I'd even say many of the foreign F-35A orders likely ordered the probe system for their F-35s as the majority of European airforces have drogue/probe refuelling capability only.nope, as far as I know, no one has ordered F-35A's with the probe, though as you said, i believe it is technically possible to do.
>>61500066perhaps they plan to keep the F-35s close to home?
>>61500044Would you take a ride on the girl or a ride on the f-35?
>>61500133>would I rather have something I can get any weekend for the price of some molly or something money can't buyIt's not even close.

>>61498687>if the weather is too bad to connect they aren't in the middle of the ocean. When the USAF does tender flights from the USA to Europe or Asia they have to refill with tankers multiple times.
>>61498626https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerial_refuelingWiki actually has your answers for once.tl;dr Flying boom was invented in order to refuel SAC's bombers with their massive fuel tanks, and USAF tankers have options for providing drogue services, such as pods carried under the wings.
>>61499923>Clearly MMF with bi-maleI fucking hate that I fap to that :*(
>>61499899That's a fucking awesome flow rate but they have to fly operationally to deliver it
>>61502655102 in service by the end of 2024.RVS 2.0 has been delayed to 2026, but even with that it's still in operational service, it's just not quite as good as they want it to be, so it'll be improved.
