Okay /k/ what is the finest of the finest handgun and in which caliber? In this scenario the shooter's skills or budget doesn't count.
>>61496260Smith and Wesson 686 in 357 magnum
>>61496277came here to post this honestly.
You are asking three different questions you fucking noguns imbecile, intended to troll for contradictory responses.
>>61496260If I had to pick one and only one handgun to use for the rest of my life the H&K mk23 is easily at the top of my list.No it's not the lightest or the fastest or the easiest to conceal but in terms of overall all around usefulness I cant think of a better candidate
>>61496414Why though? It's a massivly oversized 45 acp pistol that weighs as much as a light rifle? I could maybe get it in the 90s, but you can get a number of 10mm pistols that are smaller, more versatile, more powerful, and have higher capcity.
>>61496260Glock 17 Gen 3>>61496277Checked, solid runner up
>>61496461Because it's dependable, the ammo is everywhere and it's accurate as fuck.Again, there are a shit load of pistols that can outclass in this category or that but overall I have to give it to the old beast
>>61496486>Because it's dependable, the ammo is everywhere and it's accurate as fuck. This applies to just about every pistol that that comes from a major brand and costs more than 400.
>>61496549>Three pistols went through a 30,000-round endurance test and maintained accuracy of 2.5 in (64 mm) at 25 meters; only the O-ring needed replacement after 20,000 rounds. [With +P ammo] The weapons worked in temperatures from -25 degrees Fahrenheit to 140 degrees Fahrenheit while exposed to mud, ice, and sand. If I have to pick one and only one, that seals it
>>61496260Let me guess, you need more?
>>61496260Grizzly 1911
>>61496613I very much doubt that you'll ever shoot 20000 rounds of 45 acp, let alone 30000, nor will you be shooting in -25 degree or 140 degree temps or be dropping your handgun into buckets of mud. Why put up with something that gives up almost everything that makes a handgun useful? You aren't concealing something as big as a mk23. You don't have the power of a rifle or even a magnum revolver. You don't have the capacity of a double stack 9mm. You aren't any more reliable than any decent modern pistol that gets cleaned every now and again. Yeah it'll last forever, but other than as family heirloom piece or a range toy, I really don't see the appeal or the actual use for a pistol like the mk23.
Beretta M9 / 92 is the greatest pistol ever conceived by man.
>>61496915
>>61496260An in spec 1911A1 with GI feedlip mags with 45ACP FMJ round nose.>controlled round feed so many classes of feeding and ejection malfunctions are impossible>single stack mags so most feeding issues are impossibleThis assumes you are using a properly maintained and in spec 1911 with the proper magazines and ammo which of course almost no one does.Runners up would be:>S&W model 27 (or model 10 with the same bullet loaded into 38 special) no dash 4" barrel with 357mag 158gr LSWCHP>Colt SAA 7" 44-40 200gr lead round nose or 45LC 255gr lead flatnose>browning high power 9x19 ball>glock 17 gen 3 9x19 speer gold dot
>>61496260I'd go with the full size USP 9mm. I've had mine since 2019, recently started carrying it in an IWB holster at the 4-5 o'clock position. I thought that because of its size it would be super uncomfortable but honestly, I carried a Walther PPK the same way before and it feels almost the same, not experiencing any discomfort. Due to the long sight radius I feel like I'm drilling holes at the range, from 25m I can consistently shoot about a fist-sized group without even trying. So far reliability has been at 100%, though I do clean it after every range session so this gun has never gone to more than 300 shots in a row without a cleaning.Lots of my friends who are absolute beginners have also shot it and they were able to shoot it quite well and they loved it.

>>61496883I'm not the guy you're replying to, but this is the "best" thread, not the "most practical" thread. WTF does concealability or capacity have to do with quality?
>>61497029>>controlled round feedI don't think you know what this means.
>>61498639I know what it means. A mouser action is not the only controlled round feed action. In a 1911 with GI mags the round is held by the extractor before it leaves the magazine. Feeding after that point is deterministic and not reliant on timing.
>>61498676>In a 1911 with GI mags the round is held by the extractor before it leaves the magazineNo. Where do you get this shit from?
>>61496277Checked and /thread. Magnificent gun.
>>61498473Or maybe I don't have my head up my ass. Only SOCOM and a few unremarkable other groups used the Mk23, I'd have an easier time listing the few high level operators that don't use some flavor of glock. And apparently SOCOM agrees with me as they now use Glocks too

Round in contact with the magazine feed lips, extractor and barrel chamber.I don't have a highspeed camera so this is the best I can do the handoff from the magazine to the extractor is very fast and even after removing my recoil spring I had a hard time showing this stage of feeding. If you don't believe me there are several articles written on the subject if you do a web search for "1911 controlled round feed"

>>61499518>>61499436You loving your cheap pistol doesn't have anything to do with 'what is the finest gun'
>Q: what's THE BEST?>A: I like this okayish thing!every single time.
What about a “good enough” handgun? I’ve been having dreams every night for the last week about people breaking into my house and I can never do anything because I don’t own a gun. Last night I dreamt that somebody lit my backyard on fire, walked up my long driveway and came through my window slowly. I tried to attack them but got shot but one of their friends. Handgun to prevent this?
>>61499722>What's the best pen?>What's the best laptop?>What's the best vehicle? The original question was bait, OP is just an autist looking to scratch his "arguing over semantics and vagaries" itch
>>61499804still no reason to name things which clearly aren't anywhere near the best by any metric.
>>61499749CZ P10C is glock quality at canik price but basically any polymer 9mm at $400 and up is sufficient. Consider also cheap AR15 if home defense is your only concern. Further consider Mossberg Maverick 88 if you only have two hundred dollars to spend.
>>61499749Having a gun won't stop the dreams, Anon.
>>61499749You need to buy something within the next couple of days. These aren't just dreams, they're premonitions. >>61499979No, but killing the people that these dreams are about will.

>>61498921Honestly I am trying to just understand the appeal. Other than reliability, which is not unique to the mk23, I don't see the point of such a gun as it fails to be good at what handguns are supposed to be good at which is concealability and carryability. As a gun, sure it's nice, but as a handgun, it seems to be a handgun lapping as a primary weapon rather than a sidearm. I just don't see how a handgun that's trying to not be a handgun can be the finest handgun.
>>61499749If you are gonna carry it outside your home, get a handgun, otherwise get a long gun.
>>61496277Dubs of truth
>>61500196Dude you’re retard, the Mk23 is not that big, and not that heavy, if I can conceal carry a Desert Eagle, you can easily CC a gun that’s twice as thin, and more than half as heavy.
>>61500235>"It's not THAT big or heavy! A desert Eagle is bigger and I can conceal that!"And you could conceal a rifle down your pant leg. That doesn't make a MK23 less heavy and large. I used to carry a Beretta 92 and while it could be done, why put up with that, when there are other guns that'll perform equally well or better in a more carryable package? The damn thing weighs as much as an N frame 44 Magnum revolver unloaded. You can get a Smith M&P 10mm with the 4 inch barrel, have more power, higher capacity, have the gun be more than 10 ounces lighter, actually be concealable, be every bit as reliable, and sell at less than a quarter of the price. If you just like them and think that they are cool, that is totally valid and all my arguments go away, but if you try to argue that the mk23 has some functional advantage over more reasonable pistols, you are just out of your mind.

>>61503459I could barely do 15 when I first took it out shooting a week ago. The Underwood 158gr was the worst. Out of a Taurus 608 with it's ported barrel, it wasn't so bad. But out of a 586, it was no fun. Sticky extraction too.I'm glad I changed the wood grips for a pair of Pachmayr Presentation grips before I shot any .357.
>>61503441Shoot 38s until your balls drop.
>>61503813Sticky extraction is a pressure sign. Just buy one of those 100 round box of Remington UMC 125 grain SJHP. It'll still pack a wallop, but be more manageable and that load is a decent carry option too.
>>61504492Aren't 125gr bullets harder on the forcing cone? It was suggested to me to stick to 158gr loads in .357.
>>61496629Yes, I need a loading lever. The patterson is a POS compared to even the Walker.
>>61505049Later Patersons had a loading lever. They were also made to some kind of actual standard so they didn't blow up.

>>61505049>>61505105Later Walkers had the loading lever issue fixed.
>>61504735Yes due to flame cutting, but that is more of an issue with 110 grain bullets. 125s are totally fine with 357 mag. With 357 maximum, it may be different, but anything with magnums will be fine with 125s.

>>61507741No, I just need a gun that won't blow my fingers off and leave me defenseless while I've got Comanches and Mexicans bearing down on me. The Walker did that to people. The Dragoon never did.
>>61516205LOLIf you're not mach two, you're not armed.
>>61516913In that scenario the Colt single action Army is what you want.Pair that with a Winchester 1866 Yellowboy and your .44 ammo goes that much further.
>>61496260>FinestThat word is pretty subjective. Do you mean the most aesthetic? Do you mean the best in purely functional terms? Regardless, pic related are probably the only two pistols you need.
>>61517126In this scenario, the SAA and 1866 don't exist. Let's say it's 1849 or 1850, what is there? The Colt Paterson, the Walker, the Dragoon, and an assortment of single and double barrel pistols. Realistically we can throw the latter group of pistols out. Might be good to have a couple on your saddle for various reasons, but they're outclassed entirely by the Colts. The Paterson is alright. 5 shots, pretty accurate, fits in a belt holster. .36 caliber is weaker but still serviceable. Got that weird folding trigger and not all of them have a loading lever. They were great when they came out, but they're showing their age now.The Walker is good on paper. 6 shots, accurate, and very powerful. They're big, but 6 single shots are much bigger so we can overlook that. We've got a trigger guard and loading lever now, so that's nice. On the other hand, they aren't well made. We're all smart enough to know not to load those Pickett bullets backwards, but that doesn't fix the metallurgical issues. You can make a gun out of wrought iron, but you need to watch the quality. They weren't doing that over there at Whitneyville on their Mexican War rush order. 60 grains is great, but not when it blows up the gun.Now we come to the Dragoon. Here we have all the great aspects of the Walker with none of the flaws and even a few improvements. We've got 6 shots, a trigger guard, an improved loading lever with a latch that doesn't fall when firing, good metallurgy because Sam's got his own factory now and he isn't being rushed, and it's even a tiny bit lighter and shorter so we can maneuver it just a bit easier. "But muh 60 grains" I hear you say. Get over it. 50 grains will do the job just as well. The Dragoon would go on to put down more Indians and Yankees than the Walker could ever dream of and I know that none of them would have been any deader with 60 grains as opposed to 50.
