Why are there so few benevolent dictators? Isn't it just common sense to be loved by the people so they don't try to overthrow you?

families were headed by men
men command respect not love
all this niggerloving bullshit is not gonna make them support you
>>
>>16550678
why be loved when you can indulge in the pleasure of power with no immediate consequence?

>inspired by the enlightenment
>one of two men in paraguay with degrees at the time of independence
>natives thought he was a wizard who could communicate with demons and see the future
>ruling elite didnt like him since he was technically mulatto
>accomplishes history's easiest coup by just telling all his freinds that the government is a bunch of idiots (which they were)
>then the junta begs him to rejoin (he had been kicked out) in account of them losing popularity, but he does so on the condition they give him control of foreign policy and half of the army
>a bunch of fairly democratic (by the standards of the time) go on to make him dictator for life
>bans spaniards from marrying each other so all their children will be mulatto as revenge for being oersecuted for his mukatto heritage
>to this day paraguay lacks the distinctly eurooean and spanish upper class of other latin american countries as a result
>closes the borders to promote self sufficency (though in reality there was still a fair amount of cross border trade)
>the only good officially allowed in were munitiins and books
>in response to a plot against him by the spanish elites, he fines them basically all their money and sets up a secret police called the 'hairy feet'
>everyone exectued by the police was executed ourside his house where he could see, the oreferred method was bayineting ti save ammunition
>built a surprisingly large navy for a nation with no coastline
>outlawed higher education, reasoning that people in need of an education could use his library
>heavily discouraged marridge, and kept a book of all the women he slept with
>daughter was discovered to be a prostitute, so he gave all the prostitutes in the country golden comes to wear in their hair
>basically ruled the entire country with the help of his 3 mates and no one else
>lived in constant paranoia of assassins, had guard uproot eveey bush everywhere he went so assassins coukdnt hide behind them

>no one was allowed within 6 paces of him (except presumably all the women he slept with)
>when he got ill, he destroyed most of what few things he owened and rejected any medical help
>after his death angry spanish elites stole and dismembered his body
And to top it all off
>is to this day considered a national hero in paraguay
>has a museum dedicated to him in the capital

One of the greatest heroes in history

Because a man of a benevolent disposition will seldom rise to the station of dictator. The act of becoming a dictator typically requires the overthrow of the previous regime, more of than not involving a great deal of bloodshed. A good man is not going to sacrifice the lives of thousands of people in pursuit of power.

Hell, a good man likely wouldn't even covet supreme power. He'd be satisfied when he had risen high enough to live comfortably, and if he was in the business of government, he would not get above the middling level of the bureaucracy before just settling in to lead an ordinary life.

A good man would rise to the occasion and do what must be done to improve the lives of his people

No. In dictatorships, there are only a few individuals you need to influence in order to keep your power. The more money you spend on the people, the less you can spend ensuring the loyalty of the elite, and the likelier they will support someone less benevolent. The people can usually be scared into submission, so they are rarely a part of the equation.
