So our prehistoric ancestors.. before they branched off into primates and humans.. were squirrel-like creatures such as pic rel? Hard to believe.

We were probably more like shrews than rodents. Shrews are much older and more closely resemble the earliest mammals.

But realistically I think the earliest earliest mammals were likely monotremes given that they still lay eggs.

Echidnas and platypuses are way too specialized. Of course the viviparous mammals took their ecological niches, but I think we should indeed look at the shrew or a possum to figure what the common ancestor looked like.
