Let me guess, you need "more".

git:

/ɡJt/
noun DEROGATORY • INFORMAL
An unpleasant or contemptible person.
"He was an awkward, demanding, mean-spirited git from time to time."

At last, I truly see... it all makes perfect sense now.
hub:

/hʌb/
noun hub; plural noun: hubs
The effective centre of an activity, region, or network.
"The city has always been the financial hub of the country."

Of course, of course...

Use Forgejo. I suggest to self-host it but you can also use the master instance at https://codeberg.org/explore/repos
>>
>>100125793
Those lose all network effects.
>>
>>100125672
codeberg seems like the place people are moving to.
>>
>>100127090
Why?
You can expose your server to the internet if that's what you want.

It's released under the MIT license. How's that not free?

Maybe you don't know what network effects are.
Basically, github has value because it is used by so many people. If I am looking for a piece of software that does X, I don't have to go to a search engine and sift through a million pages of AI slop, proprietary software marketing pages, and blog posts. I can just use github search because everything is there in one place, specifically catered to what I'm looking for (open source software).

Idea: push to your preferred host (VPS/selfhost or sourcehut/codeberg) as well as github, so it can be discovered while searching more easily. Put a link to the preferred host in the README and your profile for contributors. Also depending on if you want contributions from retards allow issues and PRs on github for those who refuse to open an issue or send a patch anywhere else.

>>
>>100127482
yea, a lot of people do that, but until there is a viable alternative, everyone will still flock to github first, which gives M$ a lot of power.

Goyhub is where all the software is. If you want to be a serious open source contributor, you have to use it.

git-shell, ssh, simple bash cgi-bin script to potentially handle user registration (possibly imagemagick for captcha), email

Gitea is open core. Gitea Cloud and software tied to the cloud infrastructure is non-free.
Same as GitLab. The gitlab.com website and their cloud infrastructure are non-free.

>>100128590

Good. Wish it filtered the trannies too.

Gitlab.
>>
>>100125672
from most sane to insane:
Gitlab
Self-hosted Gitlab
Gitea, Codeberg, Sourcehut
Accepting patches through a mailing list, LK style
>>
>>100125672
self hosted gitea or just not being a lazy cuck and using ssh git remotes only. if you want web forge garbage,
git http-backend
exists and is "ok"
>>
>>100129472
so host it yourself. It runs on pretty much anything including the old rpi that's collecting dust in a drawer.

>>100130917
Gitlab is extremely bloated and resource hungry for most people. Gitea is a better pick for most of us.
>>
>>100125744
>>
>>100130991
Do you actually know that Forgejo is a fork of Gitea?
It's better because unlike Gitea, they release security patches as soon as vulnerabilities are discovered. Right now they are also working on forge federation.
They have other info on their site: https://forgejo.org/compare-to-gitea/
>>
>>100133043
no and I don't care. My Gitea instance is not exposed to the public so security is not my top concern.

>>100125672
I like Fossil and you can self host while getting lots of good features (issue handling, etc), but it doesn't come with any workflow fanciness.
Got Github Enterprise at work. They don't mind that it's MS-owned, the reverse is more like it.

I never used Gogs. Doing a quick search I stumbled upon the Gitea blog that said that the Gogs maintainer was such a schizo they decide to fork its code so they could work on it faster.
https://blog.gitea.com/welcome-to-gitea/
So Forgejo is the fork of a fork, everything is sprinkled with many layers of autism.
I guess Gitea is better than Gogs if it meant faster development, they have a feature comparison page:
https://docs.gitea.com/installation/comparison
>>
>>100125672
git, ssh, and email are the best alternative to GitHub.
