Basically, github has value because it is used by so many people. If I am looking for a piece of software that does X, I don't have to go to a search engine and sift through a million pages of AI slop, proprietary software marketing pages, and blog posts. I can just use github search because everything is there in one place, specifically catered to what I'm looking for (open source software).

Idea: push to your preferred host (VPS/selfhost or sourcehut/codeberg) as well as github, so it can be discovered while searching more easily. Put a link to the preferred host in the README and your profile for contributors.
