What's a cheaply priced laptop for traveling? It doesn't need to be capable of much, just running a browser and cloning repos/building small repos.

Was thinking microsoft surface, but I just checked and they seem to have gotten more expensive.

What do?

As a general rule of thumb use a steam deck as a rock solid reference point. Compare CPU/GPU/RAM specs to determine if the value is good or not.

Used intel or m1 MacBook
>>
>>100125597
Used m1 MacBook air if you are okay with using Mac os (bad)

Otherwise get an Asus zenbook 14

Basically these >>100125636, >>100125664

Over the years, I've come to find that battery life is the most important aspect of a laptop when traveling. The M MacBooks are the best for traveling because of this. If you can't stand macOS, then look for Windows laptops with good battery life, but I'm not sure if they exist
>>
>>100125636
>>100125664
M1 macbooks use phone CPUs and have soldered SSDs. Used intel macbooks might be alright since you can change the SSD.

Also it compares very poorly to a $400 steam deck CPU/GPU/RAM-wise.
>>
>>100125597
Dell Latitude 3440.
>>
>>100125704
those anons are recommending used models though. That's like buying used toilet paper because the SSD is soldered.

I'm not joking, look it up.

realistically how long would you be using it without a charger?

just get a chromebook for a few hundred dollars. old stinkpads suck ass for traveling, a m1 macbook is a decent choice but no reason to spend all that money when a chromebook will do all you need.

If you're not poor or overly hung up on misinterpreting specs across platforms, the M1 Macbook Air is $700 at Walmart. It's even cheaper than a refurb from Apple.
>>
>>100126009
Now compare CPU/GPU/RAM specs vs a 16GB RAM $400 steam deck.

You ARE talking about the 16GB RAM m1 macbook and not the EXTREMELY DOGSHIT 8GB RAM m1 macbook, right?
>>
>>100126038
Not him but an 8GB M1 is plenty for browsing and building small projects. Frankly it's plenty for most things, especially if you're willing to live with it swapping occasionally.
It's crazy that Apple are so miserly with the RAM, but in practice it does work well.
>>
>>100126038
>notebook computer vs a glorified nintendo switch.

ok. I guess OP is travelling, so why not add more inconveniences to his computing setup.
>>
>>100125708
no one cares. you're traveling, not hot swapping your home server fucking retard
>>
>>100126009
>the M1 Macbook Air is $700 at Walmart
its fucking 1000€ here in Germany what a ripoff. Even the refurb is 900€ I could have sworn it used to be 800.
>>
Whatever Acer pile is on sale is generally a good starting starting point. Ive seen Ryzen 3 & 5 models in the sub $400 price range that will be adaquet for day to day use. Only downside is that battery life is still only around 4-7 hours depending on what youre doing.
>>
>>100128124
Really? I paid 1500€ for a new 16/512 m1 air 2 years ago here
>>
>>100128340
New model is about the same price for the same specs.
>>
>>100126101
IT'S INSANELY DOGSHIT. 8GB RAM = lags hard as a motherfucker at everything.

Why do you think most people return it so much?
>>
>>100130728
>lags hard as a motherfucker at everything.
Macs don't run Windows or Android, retard.

>>100125597
Do not use Microsoft surfaces. They have encrypted drives, and the keys are kept by Microsoft on their cloud. You can only ask for the key, to your computer, if it locks up. If that isn't fucked up I don't know what is.
>>
>>100130777
He's right though, 8GB RAM macbooks are one of the biggest buyer's remorse things right now. It's just not enough RAM in 2024 especially because the RAM also acts like vRAM.
>>
>>100125597
for this i think the refurbed m1 air is still a good choice, i got the 8gb m1 air as my first mac and i still use it for travel/daily stuff. ridiculous battery and super light.

the 8gb ram falls apart if you keep lots of apps and tabs open, however. I've always closed stuff I'm not using so it works for me. I do game development, 3d modelling, coding with jetbrains/vs code, remote server management, writing, browsing. I get more work done with this m1 than I did with my previous thinkpad p50 xeon chunker and the m1 is actually small and light enough to bring places and sit down to with. Another big benefit is being able to pack one charger for my phone and laptop while traveling.

One substantial negative is I have to be aggressive about keeping data off the device because the min spec 256gb ssd leaves about half of that (~128gb) for you to use once the OS and all its caching expands out. Start installing brew packages/applications and you'll see how little space you have to work with. I've more recently been using vscodes ssh based remote editor to code and compile off my linux server so the footprint is lessened.

all that said i think the m1 air is one of the best laptops apple ever made. 700$ for one at best buy

>>100131140
I'm sure anon's going to be encoding lots of 4k video on his travels.
>>
>>100131445
you're right he should just use it as a chromebook instead
oh wait 8gb even kneecaps that use case lmao

Not everybody is a mom's basement dweller, frameworkcuck. OP was asking laptop recommendations for traveling purposes so battery is a top priority in the list.

I literally don't know a single person who wants to return, sell, or upgrade their <5yo Mac. People mostly use them as laptops rather than serious workstations.

I use mine most days. It's lightning fast. There are a few activities I know are basically ruled out due to the RAM (VMs, machine learning) so I don't attempt those. Everything else is perfect.
If yours really lags like you describe, first try reinstalling macOS and then find a local repair place. It's not normal.
>>
>>100131445
It degrades the SSD faster than normal you simpleton.
>>
>>100131535
Low capacity SSDs are a problem though. Those are the first ones guaranteed to fail first. If you choose a 1TB m1 mac vs a 256GB m1 mac isn't the price difference like $200? LOL
>>
>>100133491
What the fuck are you talking about? It's just iPhone CPUs with more cores thrown in. That's literally a "phone" CPU.

TCL Book 14 Go. ARM is the future!
It even has 4g built-in and runs Windows.
>>
>>100136594
So instead of using the SSD as RAM they just lag hard as a motherfucker constantly reloading shit all the time?

THANKS TIM APPLE

Altogether, look for good battery life. Thinkpads have good battery life, from my experience.

any used dell from ebay, got mine for like 130 bux , sweet deal detachable keyboard and active stylus and other shit

none of my macs have this issue so I'm not sure what the fuck you're even talking about
are you autistic

refurbished thinkpad x230

got one from ebay recently in almost new condition for 90 bucks with new keyboard + battery + 16gb ram + 256ssd + new cmos battery it came to a total of 200 bucks

you cant so any better these machines are reliable as hell and the 12'6 inch size makes it incredily compact
