How bad is NVIDIA on Linux really? Considering how well it works on Windows, you'd think their unified closed model would carry over, no?
>>
If you have any card from 1650 to above models and series: You're fine.
If you have any card from 10xx and 9xx series: You can use, but not so good and they will stop to receive driver updates soon.
Anything bellow those models: You're screwed, don't even try to use it.
>>
It's called Novidya for a reason. It sucks on Windows too

They are about to fix Wayland but ironically one of the main reasons to use Wayland (multi monitor vrr) has a separate bug that breaks it on Nvidia,

novidya for ai
amd for gayming
>>
>>100117227
Once explicit sync is added, I see no reason to keep using AMD on Linux. My experience with AMD has actually been worse on Linux minus Wayland, games are about the same and general usage, but AI and video related tasks are a mess of GPU resets and things not working as expected. NVIDIA, I haven't had the issues most people complain about like not being able to run the newest kernels, never had such a issue running a bleeding edge kernel literally I had zero issues whatsoever besides Wayland and that's gone... What is the point? I guess my principles but I would rather have a good card. Now can NVIDIA make VRAM cheaper? They have me 100% then
>>
>>100117851
And if wanted a open source drivers for shits and giggles seems that is making good progress anyway, remind me what is the point?

Yeah no reason at all...
- Vaapi encoding (ex browser streaming)
- Multi monitor VRR
- Secure boot
>>
>>100117940

>Vaapi encoding
Huh? Wtf is that? Well, last time I tried encoding or decoding it didn't show up on OBS, and with decoding just caused my GPU to reset

>Multi monitor VRR
Might be more of Wayland vs XOrg thing, but that would be relevant in my case. That's working fine on my AMD GPU though on Hyprland, one monitor is 165Hz VRR and the other just normal 60Hz

>Secure boot
Didn't ask
>>
>nvidia works fine on x11
>freetards break it on purpose by forcing the goyland meme
KEK! Freetards never fail to disappoint
>>
>>100117989
>Vaapi encoding
Hardware accelleration for streaming with discord/teams in the browser
>Multi monitor VRR
Nvidia currently has a bug where even on Wayland VRR shuts off if you connect more than one monitor to the gpu
>>
>>100118037
Well VRR is the only one I give a shit about and honestly could live without it, and already told you hardware accelerated video is no go on AMD
>>
>>100118062
Or you just put your secondary display(s) on the iGPU and it still works.
>>
20 series is pretty decent experience, now even on wayland. Sleep is broken by default on most if not all distros, but applying fixes from arch wiki fixes that.

nvidia unironically works better than amd on linux. I say that as somebody that used to use nvidia for many years and switched to amd around 6 months ago

This is such bullshit. With the actual nividia drivers my 4090 works fine.

And actually.. with newer nvidia drivers it is way better than AMD.

You still can't even switch to 4:4:4 RGB when using HDMI in Linux or Windows because AMD drivers suck ass... there's also this too:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/1bsjm5a/letter_to_amd_ongoing_amd/

I fucking hate this board so much, so much horseshit spewed 24/7.
>>
>>100117435
That video is pointless now. Nvidia went open source.
>>
>>100117227
Nvidia drivers are good for the most part.
Most of anyone who says they are bad are saying it as a Linux hobbyist.

What's good for a normal user and good for a hobbyist are VERY different things.

If your a normal user using a vanilla distro, then Nvidia drivers are fine. They can be bad if you're not a normal user and use cutting edge Linux distros or use more obscure distros. NV drivers potentially have a higher chance of breaking in these situations compared to in-tree drivers.
>>
>>100117227
It doesn't work well on Windows.

/g/entoo user here, I am on an Nvidia GPU with the proprietary driver and -wayland in my useflags, holy fuck I don't get why Gayland is so heavily pushed, X11 works perfectly fine and games work perfectly fine.
>>
>>100117227
everything newer than pascal works fine on for goyming on x11, wayland still has problems that are going to be fixed in the 555 driver update in may.
>>
>>100122187
Never had a single issue with nvidia hardware or software on linux or windows. AMD on the other hand I had a lot of issues on windows, linux worked fine

What these 2 anon said.

Running Steam on NVIDIA+Wayland is less buggier for me than running on AMD
>>
>>100117227
AMD vs NVIDIA is like a cavity filling with laughing gas vs a cavity filling with nerve gas. The filling gets done either way but one is just better.
>>

makes no sense to use wayland on nvidia right now

more users = more bug reports = it gets better exponentially faster = which generate more users

running steam on amd wayland keeps crashing my steam which doesn't happen with nvidia wayland
>>
>>100122129
They just moved proprietary stuff to different location so that they can say other stuff is open source. You are still using 1:1 same proprietary things to run nvidia on Linux. Nothing changed.

both steam-native and steam-runtime crash instantly?
>>
>>100125655
having the same config with amd igpu + nvidia dgpu and no problems on wayland except the usual nvidia stuff in games.
>>
>>100125671
Haven't tested steam-runtime. I use steam-native most of the time and the crash, which might not even be considered a crash just freezes and reset steam usually occurs when there's more than 2 steam window opened like library and chatting with someone, or just the friends window, I think i saw this bug report steam github iirc

i'll try steam-runtime with amd+wayland to see if i get the same results later

Even on X11 things doesn't work perfectly fine. Don't spread lies.
>>100122129
They released certain components, the real issue is that neither Intel, AMD and Nvidia have released open source firmware. AMD still releases its closed source drivers too.
>>100117227
I've been running Fedora + Hyprland on Nvidia, and it runs great, Nvidia drivers version 550 really did solve a lot of issues. Wlroots related issues are more constant now than Nvidia's, unless you require HDR.

MAYBE you could also test installing the flatpak version OR AMD's PRO driver on Linux.

seems to be happening on the flatpak version too and X11

Here are my testings trying to reproduce what this guy said: changing status on steam

>Steam Native NVIDIA+Wayland
Changing status resets steam, happened once

>Steam runtime NVIDIA+Wayland
Changing status resets Steam, happened once

>Steam Native AMD+Wayland
Freeze happens immediately after changing my status to away, freeze happened immediately I after changed from away to invisible, freeze happened immediately after I changed from invisible to offline and steam reset
>Steam runtime AMD+Wayland
Much like steam native

Are these driver issues or Steam issues? Up to anyone guess
>>

More tests
>Steam Native NVIDIA+X11
Stable

>Steam runtime NVIDIA+X11
Stable

>Steam Native AMD+X11
Stable
>Steam runtime AMD+X11
Stable

So weird shit happening between AMD, Wayland and Steam
