Like here's an example of a shit headphone. On some tracks it makes crackling sounds but it's NOT distortion, I tried high pass filter, no change. In reality there are 3 giant treble peaks, and EQing them by ear mostly fixes the crackling. Would need in-ear mics to properly fix the treble. With LCD-2 you can actually trust the graph.

I have destroyed 3 amps in the last 5 years. 789, 887, and an A90d. all of them were sourced by the same topping e50 running fostex T50RP. I never used the high gain on any of the amps. What am I doing that would make them fail?

Brainwavz HM5. I like em. But the gimbal is a piece of shit with eventual stress failures where it clamps to the headband. I had replacements 3d printed (someone went to the effort of producing a compatible model), the material for printing supposedly being better, and they still eventually failed.I think I need to actually redesign these fuckers. throw out the plastic plate that pairs with the gimbal to clamp to the band so that the walls of the joint can be thickened (not having to mate to the plate) and attach it using a goddamn bolt. Maybe even add a hinge with spring to completely remove the fatigue issue. That or make it out of fucking metal.

I'm looking for wired open back headphones with more bass than open backs usually have, ideally for no more than $500.I use an old iPod as my portable media player without a separate amp/DAC, so my EQ options are pretty limited there. The only store selling hi-fi gear near me is selling HD660S2 for $500, but it's the only open back model they have under $1.5k so I can't compare them against anything else in my price range in store. You guys actually recommend against Schiit but for Topping?I've only had one Topping DAC, (the e50) and it died literally overnight on the first day that I had it, I swapped it out for a Schiit Modius, and it has been completely perfect for months, even running 24/7, in fact it has been so good that I recently got the Mjolnir 3 as an amplifier to go with it.Do you guys have recommendations on "better" DACs that are balanced?
>>100121947You could just go up the ladder of schiit DACs; bifrost has balanced outs and multibit.
>>100122002The Modius is balanced, I'm more wondering what /hpg/ would recommend rather than the Modius, since the Modius is actually a decently priced (balanced) DAC as far as features go, $229 vs $119 for the Topping e50.
>>100122021Don't know any other cheap balanced DACs to be honest. How's the mjolnir anyway?
>>100122118Well, it is certainly as loud as I wanted it, I do have the gain enabled, which makes it a bit louder but I never have it maxed out unless I'm really vibing. It has absolutely no audible hissing or buzzing, which is also very important to me, but I'd say that it definitely gets too hot for my liking. I've actually burnt my finger on it.One of the biggest reasons that I got it is because it looks like it can be rack mounted rather nicely, and fit in a rack without being too skinny.Personally, if I wasn't tied to a rackmount form factor, I'd probably go for the Valhalla instead, but I haven't heard a Valhalla on my HD800's so it is hard to get a proper idea on how much different it sounds/how much quieter it is.Overall, I'd probably give it a 9/10, it would be a 10 if it wasn't so hot, and/or if it was a bit cheaper, maybe 800$ would be a better price, idk.
>>100122245>but I'd say that it definitely gets too hot for my likingYea that's pretty standard for class A(ish) amps. Even the cooler running amps I build run around 55C when fully warmed up.
>>100121947>Do you guys have recommendations on "better" DACs that are balanced?See>>100104403$200, balanced, sounds great, not made by topping
>>100122245>Personally, if I wasn't tied to a rackmount form factor,If you really wanna have some fun (and spend way too much money) get a burl audio B2 bomber rack mount pro dac.You will need some kind of source that supports AES over xlr since it's pro gear, no usb in, no optical in. Also it will output huge voltage and blow up your amp if you configure it wrong. There is also the dangerous music convert 2 which is a little more flexible in terms of inputs supporting optical, toslink etc.
>>100106909What are you doing to them? My chink copy pads last way longer. They're like 6 euros on amazon anyway so it's not like it matters.
>>100122537>DANTE input source
>>100122537Lol, that's pretty awesome looking, but I actually have my DACs hidden, my PC and most of the gear connected to it is in a closet that is a few feet away from me, which is why I went with balanced audio in the first place. That's also why the DAC isn't pictured in my stack.I was gonna attach a photo but can't get a good one without cleaning, so just imagine a Modius sitting on a shelf with a bunch of USB hubs underneath it and a ton of wires going everywhere that are grouped separately into condiuts of data, power, and audio. The Modius is honestly perfect for my use-case because of how small it is compared to other biggus dickus DACs that take up more space on my desk than I want to give up.
>>100122471So originally I was looking at this exact DAC to replace the e50, but decided against it because it requires drivers for Windows, I don't really want to install drivers for my DAC so I decided on the modius instead. I'm respectful of your opinion if you think that installing drivers is a non-issue, but to each their own.
>>100122651>but decided against it because it requires drivers for WindowsIt only requires drivers for ASIO mode which is a meme and all dacs need a driver to use ASIO.It doesn't need drivers for normal use as a dac.Unless maybe you are still on Windows 7 that OS is kind of a shitshow for audio devices.

>>100124004The sigmas are more attainable at least. Would also be interesting to hear a pair of those. There actually happens to be an Ω up for sale right now, but I don't have the spare cash to be able to drop on it right now, RIP.
>>100124021Just curious, how much have you spent on all your headphone gear? You’ve got a lot of desirable equipment. But yeah I also haven’t been able to stomach dropping the cash on Sigmas without hearing them first. I’ve heard they have a pretty odd but unique sound signature.
>>100124202Well all the estat amps I built myself, so their cost to me is just how much the parts were. I've lost track of how much I spent in total to build the T2 but it's several thousand. The wood volume knob alone was $150 for example. I am selling the T2 for $12k if that tells you anything.
I digress...I saw Schiit makes a 4 band EQ. My question is, does anybody make a relatively inexpensive four band parametric EQ about the same size? Had picrel back around 2000 in my car, so I know it's possible.

I couldn't tell you the material but this was purchased 1 month after the official launch and has been used every single day for 8 hours sense. The only thing I've had to replace are the cables twice (the plastic wrapping on the cable tends to peal) and I change the earpads every 6 months and the headband once every year. I also strip the headphone down everytime I replace the earpads to clean and retighten the screws. The (for lack of a better term) "3D swivel" feature of the earcups tends to loosen and the screws backout. Don't want to loctite them either for fear of stripping it.But yea I do like the way they are wearing. Looks nice.

>>100137235Magni+ without DAC (didn't offer it back then) with the Modi with the ESS ES9018 not the newer Multibit. Though if she gets the Para or Sundara we'll probably grab the multibit one to try. Personally think there is no real need since the ESS ES9018 is already a reference class 32bit DAC. Most high end home theater equipment uses the ESS Saber 9018 so why spend more than the base Modi lol. I don't use it everyday, she does. I still have an old as fuck balanced Schiit Jotunheim which originally had the launch DAC that I replaced with the Multibit DAC because my dumbass tripped on the wire and bent the contact pins for the USB cable beyond repair. They've been rock solid and they are the cheapest way to get end to highend gear. The Modi base uses an ES9018. You really don't need more. But audiophiles love their snake oil.
>>100137330i'm using my focusrite clarett+ 2pre as a dac as i bought it for my guitar but turns out it has a pretty decent dac and can also output quite the power without the need for an amp.i get to a confortable audio level with only an 8th to a 4th of its power output.bear in mind i like to listen at 50db at most.
>>100137301>what's the best hi quality neutral sounding headphone i can get under 1 or 2k ?Probably the HiFiMan Arya, objectively speaking. I prefer the HD800S though. After that ironically the most neutral headphone is the Sundara 2020 which is significantly cheaper. HD800S has bonus points for being the widest soundstage of any headphone hands down. OP sucks cocks.
Hello hpg Thinking of getting the Fostex TH900s but not sure. I really like the E-mu Teak sound
>>100136470Don't call me a g*erman ever again, kiddo.
>>100137394I'm >>100136470Want to buy mine? They are the mahogany release and come with the matching Fostex stand. I personally hate them and only used them for maybe an hour or two total since I got them. They have weird earpads, don't fit my ears well and sound muddy. I genuinely think the DT 770 Pro is a superior sounding headphone while being comfier. But will gladly part with them on the cheap lol.
>>100137436You sure they're a TH900 and not a TH-X00?
>>100137493They are the TH-X00 yes. Same driver. Same V curve, same 900-1000hz peak and same 9-10Khz drop. They sound nearly identical and nearly the same amount of shitty. The only variance in FR is due to the differing earpads. But you can just put the OG pads on it if you want it to sound muddier. I can't imagien why anyone would want them. If you are a huge basshead and want something from Fostex the TH909 is superior. You get the same +3-4dB in the bass and lower mids, and then a peak in the middle treble just like the THX00/TH900 but with an actual soundstage. Also I think the single Japanese guy at Fostex tuning these headphones is deaf in the right ear because all Fostex headphones have 1-3dB boost in the right channel. But I guess I don't understand bassheads. Enjoy the TH900 if you want. I'd rather split the output and prop my feet up on a subwoofer while enjoying a nice neutral headphone.
For anyone who wants it here is a sorted table from RTINGS for the two things they do well. Soundstage and their "neutral sound" target in reviews. Filtered out all the nonsense and sorted by "Neutral sound": https://www.rtings.com/headphones/tools/table/135918

do all modern headphones have over current/voltage/power protection? do I need to worry about some random amp being too powerful and frying my drivers?
>>100142983Pretty sure no headphones have power protection, fuses are non-linear and would change how the headphone sounds. >>100146539Does this sound like an adequate explanation for the ANC difference?>DO NOT GET THE XM5s. I've used both and I can confidently say that are practically the exact same heaphne but the XM5 does 2 things that made me return them. The ANC on the 5s is auto adjusting, which means if you move your head while wearing them, the pressure would change in the headphones which makes them try and readjust the ANC. This leads to a very unsteady noise canceling experience. While wearing them, I could tell the noise cancelling was jumping all around (I do wear glasses so this might effect it).>The XM4s let you set the noise cancelling to a certain level and it will only change if you re calibrate it, which means a much more consistent noise canceling experience.>Don't use over-ears in the gym, especially ANC ones, the sweat fucks up the microphones in the cups and you'll end up with ANC that doesn't work rightI don't do much cardio, only lift, but sometimes in warm weather and this could be an issue. >>100148868Because Brazil is absolutely retarded when it comes to taxation of imported products.Tax import law here is an eye watering 92% of the merchandise’s price plus the shipping cost.BUT... Sometimes resellers get lucky and manage to avoid this tax by buying from CHAI-NAH or other countries that might not declare the full value of the goods. I suspect the headphones mentioned, which dodged these import taxes, are the cheaper models that remain unsold in stock because many Brazilians, struggling financially and simply can't afford them (minimum wage here is $250/mo). That's probably why the seller decided to cut their losses and sell them at a discount, whereas the pricier models likely got snagged by the tax authorities.
