The created design must resonate with people and achieve ‘Wider Meaning’ to be an icon. Whether that meaning derives from intentionally being built on it or if the meaning appears from interpretations, that is the real marker of something being iconic. Not silhouette tests or colour theory or any other rule of thumb. Pic related is iconic, for bettor or worse and that’s because it is an avatar for internet humour of it’s current day. The real difficultly in all this comes in the rat rave of attention spans forcing your thing into fitting any given niche. The final product, or some aspect of has to be good…or just lucky in the end to make the transition from Donut Steele to icon. Donut steele itself is an icon btw.
