Homer was 34 in season 1, which aired in 1989, meaning he was born in 1955. Homer was 36 when Nirvana first started to make waves in 1991.Homer is roughly 40 today, sometimes late 30s (it's inconsistent) meaning he was born no later than 1987, 37 years ago. We're not only approaching the point where Homer is younger than the Simpsons itself, we're already at the point where Homer would have experienced Nirvana as a child.

I don't know if it's because I've spent decades thinking of him as a "dad" archetype, but I really struggle to believe Homer is supposedly mid to late thirties. I've almost always figured he was around 45. Maybe it's his physique or him being a cue ball, but I never think of him as being less than a decade away from me and my friends.It's like how I reject the idea of the Mario Bros being in their early twenties. That's never felt right to me.

As for Homer, it's more that the late 30s guy that he represented stopped being that degree of a slob basically within a decade of the shows' existence. If you've seen pictures of your older relatives that cluster with him from that era, it makes more sense.
