Homer was 34 in season 1, which aired in 1989, meaning he was born in 1955. Homer was 36 when Nirvana first started to make waves in 1991.

Homer is roughly 40 today, sometimes late 30s (it's inconsistent) meaning he was born no later than 1987, 37 years ago. We're not only approaching the point where Homer is younger than the Simpsons itself, we're already at the point where Homer would have experienced Nirvana as a child.

Homer's age varies a bit before setting around the late thirties/early forties, so there's a while still to go.
>>

Born in '81, same year as my dad.
>>
>>143322413
Nah, more like

Homer's age is whatever the EPISODE needs it to be. Canon is still safe, because it's a per episode basis, fuck off.

Why doesn't everyone complain that Marge looked better with bigger boobs? They all forget, episode to episode unless they NEED to remember something.

The way i've always considered it is that the simpsons is canon for the season it's in. Not the whole show.
It sucks, but it's how i cope
>>
I don't know if it's because I've spent decades thinking of him as a "dad" archetype, but I really struggle to believe Homer is supposedly mid to late thirties. I've almost always figured he was around 45. Maybe it's his physique or him being a cue ball, but I never think of him as being less than a decade away from me and my friends.

It's like how I reject the idea of the Mario Bros being in their early twenties. That's never felt right to me.
>>
>Maggie was born 1 year ago

my theory is that we all died and we are on Limbo watching the simpsons get shittier and shittier meanwhile in the real world the simpsons ended around the year 2000
>>
>>143322413
Did the Simpsons ever have a 9/11 episode?
>>
>>143323471
Mid to late I could understand for the Mario bros., but early 20s is weird. The mustaches wouldn't be fully rich yet. As for Homer, it's more that the late 30s guy that he represented stopped being that degree of a slob basically within a decade of the shows' existence. If you've seen pictures of your older relatives that cluster with him from that era, it makes more sense.

I felt Homer was more Hank Hill's age or look. But 34? He looks and acts 42. Shit, I'm 38 and I feel younger than prime seasons Homer. How old was Dan when he was voicing him?
>>
>>143323712
Why would it?
They'd forget the next episode... =^)

He would've been 32 when the show debuted in 89.

I like to imagine that the show was more or less permanently set in the early 90s during its golden age with only the adult characters aging at all, because otherwise the timeline stuff just gets way too whacky even by the end of season 7.

the fuck is 9/11-

WHY DIDN'T ANY OF YOU TELL ME?

Because no one told us, nigga

a while ago I started tinkering with some ideas for a fanfic retelling of The Simpsons with proper time progression and more consistent continuity over the course of seasons, this was the rough idea I had of how it'd go using the age of the kids as the benchmark;

1 year equals 2 seasons

seasons 1 & 2: Bart 10, Lisa 8, Maggie 1
seasons 3 & 4: Bart 11, Lisa 9, Maggie 2
seasons 5 & 6: Bart 12, Lisa 10, Maggie 3
seasons 7 & 8: Bart 13, Lisa 11, Maggie 4
seasons 9 & 10: Bart 14, Lisa 12, Maggie 5
seasons 11 & 12: Bart 15, Lisa 13, Maggie 6
seasons 13 & 14: Bart 16, Lisa 14, Maggie 7
seasons 15 & 16: Bart 17, Lisa 15, Maggie 8
seasons 17 & 18: Bart 18, Lisa 16, Maggie 9
seasons 19 & 20: Bart 19, Lisa 17, Maggie 10
seasons 21 & 22: Bart 20, Lisa 18, Maggie 11

1 year equals 4 seasons

seasons 23, 24, 25, 26: Bart 21, Lisa 19, Maggie 12
seasons 27, 28, 29, 30: Bart 22, Lisa 20, Maggie 13
seasons 31, 32, 33, 34: Bart 23, Lisa 21, Maggie 14
seasons 35, 36, 37, 38: Bart 24, Lisa 22, Maggie 15

so assuming Seasons 1 & 2 would be set in 1989, then by the end of the first progression block Seasons 21 & 22 would be set in 1999, while the current Season 35 would be set in 2003(of course this would necessitate a lot of rewriting of episodes to replace references to pop culture, real world events, and technology with more timely ones but if I were to actually do anything with this concept I wasn't going to adapt every single episode anyways)
